Day 3 Gita Journal: What You Dwell On, You Become

Week 1, Day 3 – Controlling Desires

Today I read a pair of verses from the Gita that felt deeply personal. In 2.62–63, Krishna describes a chain reaction:

"While contemplating the objects of the senses, a person develops attachment for them, and from such attachment lust develops, and from lust anger arises.
From anger, complete delusion arises, and from delusion, bewilderment of memory. When memory is bewildered, intelligence is lost, and when intelligence is lost, one falls down again into the material pool."

Reading this felt like watching my own mind in slow motion. So many times, I’ve seen myself getting caught in this loop. It starts small—scrolling through my phone, wanting things I don’t need, or comparing my life to others. Then comes frustration, envy, or just restlessness. Eventually, I’m mentally exhausted, and I don’t even remember why I was upset to begin with.

This verse reminded me how powerful the mind is—and how easily it gets pulled away from peace. Desires aren’t just fleeting wants; they can grow roots in the mind and pull us into confusion. The Gita isn’t saying "don’t feel anything," but rather be aware of what we feed our thoughts.

So today, I want to practice mindfulness. If I catch myself getting attached to an outcome, a craving, or a moment of comparison, I’ll take a pause. I’ll remind myself that peace comes not from indulging every desire, but from understanding them and letting them pass.

Lessons from Today’s Reading:

  1. Desires grow through mental repetition—what I focus on becomes powerful.
  2. Unchecked desire leads to emotional chaos—anger, delusion, and poor judgment.
  3. Awareness is the first step to freedom from this cycle.

Actions for the Day:

  1. Be mindful of what I dwell on mentally—observe without attachment.
  2. Pause when I feel a strong desire or emotion, and breathe before reacting.
  3. Spend 5 quiet minutes noticing my thoughts without judgment—just watching them come and go.

Every day with the Gita feels like peeling back another layer of the mind. Let’s keep going.
