Growing up my family used to spend a lot of our summers in a cabin near Yellowstone National Park. It's such a beautiful area with pine trees everywhere, mountains, rivers and all sorts of wildlife. The wildlife is usually best observed from the distance though, moose, elk and bison are not friendly animals when they are up close and personal.
When my mother was young she travelled to the park with my grandparents. This was during the era when people were allowed to feed the bears. As a result bears were everywhere by the roads looking for free handouts. Once my grandfather rolled down his car window and took out a stick of gum, ripped it in half and gave half to a bear. He then rolled the window back up just in time because the bear swatted the window with his paw because it wanted the whole stick of gum. Perfect example of why they banned feeding the bears in Yellowstone!
Yellowstone is full of geothermal pools and geysers which are part of the parks draw. In reality it's a supervolcano that last erupted 70,000 years ago. However, it remarkably stable and not likely to erupt anytime soon. But the magma deep below heats the water resulting in widespread hot springs and impressive geysers. That's why it was the United States very first National Park.
In 1999 the US Mint produced a commemorative coin in the Philadelphia Mint to mark the 125th anniversary of Yellowstone. This one is a silver proof made with ninety percent silver. The obverse features the geyser Old Faithful and the reverse a bison as part of a modified seal of the Department of the Interior:
About the coin:
From numista.com
It's a beautiful commemorative coin. The US produces multiple commemorative coins yearly, and I tend to pick up the one I like the best. This one I have a personal connection to from all the summers I spent around Yellowstone Park. If you have never been it's well worth the trip!
I'm going to share some really nice pictures from the park along with some videos of geysers erupting. The photo up top is of a hot spring in the Norris basin of the park if I'm not mistaken. The algae turn the area surrounding the spring orange and red, they have evolved to survive the near boiling environment around these pools. It wouldn't be wise to take a dip here because the water is so hot you wouldn't live very long.
I have many pictures of the park that haven't been converted to digital yet. I really need to get that done...

Some bison grazing near a river, what a beautiful view!
There are numerous geysers around the park that erupt boiling water into air. Old Faithful gained that name because it regularly erupts every sixty to ninety minutes. It can launch water up to 185 feet (56 meters) into the sky. The world's tallest geyser is also located there, called Steamboat Geyser. It can launch water 300 feet (91 meters) in the air! It erupts sporadically from once every three days to once every fifty years. It's currently in a stage of activity where it has been erupting up to 38 times a year. I've always wanted to see it erupt in person, but have never been lucky enough to be there when it erupted!
Here I have included a couple youtube videos, the first of Old Faithful erupting and the second is Steamboat geyser erupting. Unfortunately the links aren't appearing on the preview right now but I'm hoping they work when I publish the final product. Crossing my fingers! You can always click on the link to youtube worst case scenario!
I also included a couple still images for you below in case the videos don't work.

It's more impressive when you realize that the pine trees can reach a height of 80 feet (24 meters.)

Yellowstone has always been a special place for me personally having spent so much time there as a youngster. I understand that it can be a little busy in summer anymore along with so many other of the National Parks in the western US. I highly recommend a visit if you get a chance even if you have to brave a few crowds.
That will about do it for my post today. I hope you enjoyed the silver coin and the Yellowstone photos. It's one of my favorite places! If you have any suggestion, comments, or questions please feel free to leave them below. Thanks for stopping by and keep on stacking!

It's also sitting on one huge ancient volcano that could yet see the biggest eruption witnessed by man. Until then, we can enjoy it's unique natural beauty.
Nothing as much fun as sitting on top of a ticking time bomb! They produce beautiful natural environments. It seems like they keep finding more and more super volcanos...
How are the kids?

How beautiful is nature! My gosh, what a joy to grow up near that area if you can visit that time after time. I can't imagine if you grow up there that you won't appreciate nature to the fullest. It's amazing.. You should really get these pictures digital if you have them, great memories!
!PIMP
Already working on it. It's beautiful isn't it? It's an amazing place!
!BBH
yeah it's really beautiful!
We also have a natural park not far from us but we only attempted to go there once, while we just pinpointed the middle of the park (stupid us) while we should have figured out which beach we'd wanted to check as apparently, there are some real nice hidden gems that are hard to find without directions..
Hoping to convince my boyfriend to check it another time soon :)
!PIMP
That sounds fun! Those hidden gems are secrets often known best by the locals. I hope you find someplace awesome. I really miss being in the Caribbean with so many beautiful secret gems to visit...
How was your day?
!BBH
For sure! I recently found out there is an actual park where you can use public barbecues in the big city. We really miss that and in Budapest they had some of these in a huge park, which was quite fun. So now at least this summer, we can head out there to have a nice bbq moment :)
My day was packed with paperwork stuff but the good thing is, it felt like a Friday and I thought some stuff was not done this week, at least there's Monday again.. then tonight I realised I have another day to try and get it done this week :)
How was yours?
!PIMP
I hope you get some good rest tonight and finish up all that wonderful paperwork....
Public barbeques in the park sound great. You little one will love that! I do miss Spain, with any luck I can make a trip over again in the not too distant future!
!BBH
It's sad that we have a communal garden and they don't allow us to bbq in there. I mean, I understand some rules should be set, for example on the part with stones and not the grass but come on. It's not even that big of a flat so we can all agree on how to handle it but it's really not allowed, sadly. I was looking forward to having those here.
The most important thing is, we have a pool and it will be open this summer (there were talks about swimming pools not being allowed to open this summer, so I was a bit nervous about it).
The pool will make our summer so much more enjoyable and less hard to deal with during the heat waves in July and August.
I bet if I'd live in Florida, I'd prefer the sea but the beaches here are shit, I hate it so I don't love going there. A pool is better :)
Good night, I'm off to bed now. One more morning to get up for the school drive, and then I can sleep in a bit for a week haha.

Spent a lot of time in Wyoming back when it still felt like wilderness. Returned a few years ago and it didn't seem nearly as wild, although I did see a Grizzly in the Park!
That is pretty cool, I haven't ever seen a Grizzly there. They try to keep them far from people these days. Wyoming isn't what is used to be for sure!
Yellowstone is indeed fascinating and beautiful! I have not been there. One of these days!!!

It's worth it, you'll be glad you did. Wyoming and Montana are beautiful!

I have never really been anywhere out west besides Colorado and back. I hope to one day get out there again. This summer we are going to Colorado, but it is going to be another there and back trip. That is a really niece piece of silver!
Yellowstone is trip worth making. Yellowstone and The Grand Tetons are very close by each other in Wyoming and Montana just north of Colorado. Thanks, glad you liked it!
I'll get there one day!
Beautiful indeed! Never been there… but one day who knows… the coin is awesome!! In a snowing day like today is nice to seek for summer planning 😹
It's worth the trip! Definitely time to consider summer vacations when it's snowing... Glad you liked the coin! Thanks!

@thebighigg, I sent you anPretty cool isn't it? Over a hundred years ago in New Zealand there was a geyser that reached 425 meters and was the tallest in the world, but a landslide buried it in 1904. It must have been amazing. Now Steamboat Geyser is the tallest!

A giant Super volcano, let’s hope it stays a sleeping giant for a long, long time!😇🙄
I can relate to the feeding of the Bears, as a kid who used to vacation in the Smoky Mountains. People did the same thing they pull off the side of the road and roll the windows down and feed the bears. …….. not safe and not very smart!
Definitely not, my grandfather almost found out the hard way!
Glad he didn’t……..😇
I always try to stay clear of the local bears, speaking of which it is that time of year. They are waking up! 😮
We've never been there but our son and his wife did a trip last summer and spent 3 weeks visiting places including Yellowstone and Mt. Rushmore. The pictures of Yellowstone and the geysers are just amazing.
I have a VR headset that has the Blue Planet experience on it and one of the places you can go is to Yellowstone. I've almost landed in the pool in your first photo as the VR headset lets you fly over it.
I might have to look for the Yellowstone commemorative coin sometime as it has one of my favorite things on it--a buffalo!
