Happy Sunday everyone! It's been another warm, sunny day here, I've really enjoyed this weekend! I was just enjoying the backyard but peeled myself away to get this published. Like every Sunday, today will be my weekly HSBI and DUO token giveaway. This will be the 50th week of this initiative, coming up on the one year anniversary here pretty soon. I'm glad to see you are all still interested and enjoying the event each week!
Before we jump into last week's winners, I'll do a quick recap of the favorite whales chosen by everyone last week. We had 43 people on the Wheel of Names today, so another busy one. I remember when I was thrilled to get 10 participants! Also a special thank you to @alohaed for sponsoring two HSBI for the second place winner and one for the third place winner. Here we go...
Orca or Killer Whale
nationalgeographic.com
This was the top pick of the week as the favorite whale. It's no wonder because of their distinctive marking and intelligence. They are the apex predators of the oceans and even great white sharks will run when a pod of these whales is approaching. Technically they aren't actually whales, but are in the dolphin family. They are highly social and tend to live in family units or pods that are very stable. Individual groups will vary in behaviors and eating habits, even great whites are on the menu for some of them.
There has never been a documented case of them hurting humans in nature, but in captivity some have killed their trainers. Fortunately, Sea World no longer has shows featuring them and releasing the one's able to live in the wild. There is a pod off of the straights of Gibraltar that have taken to sinking small boats, no one knows why but they ram the vehicle until it sinks. This always leads to rescuers saving the unlucky sailors.
This was picked by fourteen participants, thanks to: @flummi97 , @vaynard86 , @borniet , @dewabrata , @ekavieka , @gwajnberg , @rainbowdash4l , @whywhy , @longganisan , @angeluxx , @herman-german , @ladymisa , @lumpiadobo and @ronnie10 !
Blue Whale
iflscience.com
This is the biggest mammal of them all measuring up to 98 feet (29.9 meters) in length. Despite it massive size, it is a gentle giant that filter feeds on krill. They are found around the world and like to feed in polar regions in the summer and the tropics in the winter. An interesting factoid is that they are the largest animals to have ever lived on earth, that we know of anyway... Unfortunately, whaling has decreased their numbers to near extinction and are considered an endangered species.
I have never one of these but would love to! I have seen videos of fishing boats coming across them and he whale is much larger than the boat! Maybe some day... The was picked by eleven participants, thanks to: @olaf.gui , @alexvan , @yusmelys , @logen9f , @lanzjoseg , @daddydog , @no-advice , @tortangkahoy , @monkmasters , @suisver and @freed99 !
Humpback Whale
yourgeorgiacountry.com
These large whales are popular for whale watchers as they "breach" out of the water in an impressive display. I've seen them before off the coast of Long Beach, California, it's an amazing site. These are very large animals that average 46 to 56 feet (14 to17 meters) in length and are predated by orca whales. These giants feed off of krill and small fish and are found around the world. They will feed in polar regions in summer but return to the tropics in winter and give birth.
Interesting facts about the animals is that use bubbles to hunt their prey. The bubbles move the krill into the feeding zone. They were hunted to near extinction but have rebounded since the year 1960. Sadly whales have been hunted to near extinction by fisherman for hundreds of years. Fortunately most are making a comeback today! This was a pick by ten participants, thanks to @hatdogsensei , @theleader07 , @bitandi , @doombot75 , @silverd510 , @shiftrox , @silvertop , @tengolotodo , @henruc and @pablito.saldo !
Sperm Whale
ar.inspiredpencil.com
This is the largest toothed predator and whale in the oceans and the whale from Moby Dick. The head makes up almost one third of the total length of the mammal that can be up to 52 feet (16 meters) in adult males. Healthy adult individuals have no predators, making right up at the top of the food chain in the oceans. Although orcas are known to kill sick adults or calves. They got their name from a waxy oil found in it's head called spermaceti which early whalers mistook for whale semen. It was a highly utilized oil used in industry as a lubricant and by civilians in lamps and candles.
Some interesting facts about the whale are that it has the largest brain on earth which is five times larger than a human brain. The can dive to deeper than 7,000 feet (2250 meters) and have the highest vocalization on the planet at 236 decibels. That would be deafening! These whales also produce ambergris in their digestive tracts which is used in perfume and is sometimes found along beaches as flotsam. It's still very valuable even today. Another interesting fact is that they live a long time, up to seventy years!
This was picked by three participants, thanks to: @elias22 , @blitzzzz and @neblomax !
Beluga Whale
101animals.com
These whales related to dolphins inhabit the arctic waters off of Russian and North America. The grow up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) long and are opportunistic feeders. They are popular in captivity due to their graceful swimming and smile like faces. The species is a social animal that tends to live in groups of up to ten and during mating season up to thousands. Hunting is closely controlled and usually limited to native populations in Canada, Alaska, and Russia.
I have seen these in aquariums, they are very cute animals! We had one participant choose this one, thanks to @rqr4 !
We had a few others picked that I don't have time to write up today including the Fin Whale by @florakese , another filter feeder. There is also the Narwhal picked by @sylmarill , the Baleen Whale picked by @edreisito , the Black Whale chosen by @katriel1 ! Thanks for participating everyone!
This week's entry question:
Since we did whales last week, let's do sharks. What is you favorite kind of shark?
The Giveaway
I will be giving out one prize of five (5) HSBI. Second and Third prizes will be 2 DUO tokens, the token I recently launched with @bulliontools and @bitcoinman . It offers those who stake sufficient tokens daily curation on quality posts, dividends, and a tipping bot. It also helps to onboard and retain new Hive members. At the end of the post there is a link to the white paper and where to purchase the tokens. Fourth prize is 100 BBH tokens. To participate you need a reputation level of at least 25 and bots cannot win. And please one entry per person to make it fair to everyone.
@alohaed is generously kicking in two HSBI to the second place winner and one to the third place winner. Thanks for you support my friend!
If you would like to be placed on a weekly reminder list just let me know and I'll make sure you get tagged each week.

How to Enter
Every week this will change. I'm looking for engagement rather than just saying "I am in". There is no need to upvote or re-blog, although if you choose to do so I would appreciate it. This week's question should be fun:
What is your favorite kind of shark?
HSBI
If you are unfamiliar with the prize you can learn more here:

Now to choose last week's lucky winners!
