Le retour du Livreur
Les semaines passèrent, et la neige, tenace, continuait de recouvrir la petite ville, étouffant les sons et intensifiant l’atmosphère de mystère qui pesait sur ses ruelles. Le café, jadis un lieu de chaleur et de rires, semblait désormais figé dans une torpeur inquiète. Les habitants murmuraient encore à propos de la Femme aux flocons, mais un autre murmure, plus ancien, refit surface : le Livreur.
Un soir où la lune, pleine et blafarde, jetait une lumière irréelle sur la neige, une silhouette familière apparut au bout de la rue principale. Vêtu de son manteau sombre et coiffé de son chapeau à large bord, le Livreur marchait d’un pas calme, presque cérémonial. Il tenait à la main une petite valise usée, la même que celle qu’il portait toujours. Les rares passants s’immobilisèrent, figés entre stupeur et crainte. Il semblait ne pas les voir, ses yeux fixés droit devant lui.
Lorsqu’il poussa la porte du café, un frisson traversa l’assemblée. Le grincement des gonds résonna dans le silence comme un cri d’avertissement. Lentement, il s’approcha de la table, désormais vide depuis que les propriétaires avaient fait brûler celle gravée par la mystérieuse réponse. À sa place se trouvait une autre table, identique en apparence, mais qui semblait étrangement terne sous la lumière vacillante des chandeliers.
La confrontation
À peine s’était-il assis que la porte s’ouvrit de nouveau. La Femme aux flocons fit son entrée, accompagnée d’un souffle glacial qui fit vaciller les flammes des chandeliers. Les regards de la femme et du Livreur se croisèrent, et pour la première fois, une tension presque palpable emplit la pièce. Elle s’avança d’un pas sûr, son carnet à la main, et s’assit en face de lui. Aucun mot ne fut échangé, mais leurs gestes étaient éloquents.
Le Livreur ouvrit sa valise et en sortit un paquet d’enveloppes jaunies par le temps. La Femme, elle, ouvrit son carnet et commença à écrire d’une main ferme, comme si chaque mot qu’elle traçait répondait à une énigme posée en silence par l’homme en face d’elle. Les clients, terrifiés mais fascinés, osèrent à peine respirer. Chacun savait qu’il se jouait ici quelque chose de bien plus grand que la simple transmission de secrets.
Soudain, le Livreur brisa le silence. Sa voix, rauque et profonde, résonna :
« Tu joues avec des forces qui te dépassent. »
La Femme, sans lever les yeux de son carnet, répondit d’un ton glacial :
« Et toi, tu les as laissées te consommer. »
La révélation
Les chandeliers vacillèrent une dernière fois avant de s’éteindre, plongeant le café dans l’obscurité totale. Un grondement sourd monta, semblable à celui d’une avalanche, et une lumière blanche, aveuglante, emplit la pièce. Quand les clients retrouvèrent la vue, les deux figures avaient disparu, ne laissant derrière elles qu’un carnet ouvert sur la table. Les pages semblaient brûlées sur les bords, et les mots qui y étaient inscrits formaient un avertissement énigmatique :
« Le cycle est bouclé, mais le prix reste à payer. »
Une peur éternelle
Le lendemain, les habitants trouvèrent le café fermé, ses portes scellées par des planches clouées en hâte. Certains racontèrent avoir vu des ombres danser à l’intérieur durant la nuit, comme si le bâtiment lui-même portait le poids des secrets qu’il avait abrités. D’autres affirmèrent que le Livreur et la Femme avaient fusionné, devenant une entité qui parcourait désormais les rues enneigées à la recherche de nouvelles vérités.
Une chose est sûre : dans cette petite ville, plus personne n’osait parler à voix haute de ce qu’il savait. Car la légende avait pris un nouveau tournant, et chacun comprenait qu’un simple murmure pouvait désormais éveiller des forces bien plus sombres que le silence.
The Return of the Courier
Weeks passed, and the relentless snow continued to blanket the small town, muffling sounds and amplifying the air of mystery that hung over its streets. The café, once a place of warmth and laughter, now seemed frozen in an uneasy stillness. The townsfolk still whispered about the Snowflake Woman, but an older, more haunting murmur resurfaced: the Courier.
One night, under the pale and eerie light of a full moon, a familiar figure appeared at the end of the main street. Dressed in his dark coat and wide-brimmed hat, the Courier walked with a calm, almost ceremonial stride. In his hand, he carried a small, weathered suitcase—the same one he always bore. The few passersby froze in their tracks, caught between awe and fear. He appeared oblivious to them, his gaze fixed straight ahead.
When he pushed open the café door, a shiver ran through the patrons. The creak of the hinges echoed like a cry of warning. Slowly, he approached the table, now empty after the owners had burned the one etched with the mysterious response. In its place stood another table, identical in appearance but strangely dull under the flickering chandelier lights.
The Confrontation
Barely had he sat down when the door opened again. The Snowflake Woman entered, accompanied by a gust of icy wind that made the chandelier flames dance wildly. Her gaze met the Courier's, and for the first time, an almost palpable tension filled the room. She walked forward with steady confidence, her leather notebook in hand, and took the seat opposite him. No words were exchanged, but their gestures spoke volumes.
The Courier opened his suitcase and retrieved a stack of envelopes, yellowed with age. The Woman opened her notebook and began to write with a steady hand, as though each word she penned answered an unspoken riddle posed by the man before her. The patrons, terrified yet mesmerized, barely dared to breathe. They all knew that something far greater than the mere exchange of secrets was unfolding.
Suddenly, the Courier broke the silence. His voice, gravelly and deep, reverberated through the room:
“You’re playing with forces beyond your understanding.”
Without lifting her eyes from her notebook, the Woman replied in an icy tone:
“And you let them consume you.”
The Revelation
The chandeliers flickered one last time before extinguishing, plunging the café into total darkness. A deep rumble rose, akin to the sound of an avalanche, and a blinding white light filled the room. When the patrons regained their vision, the two figures were gone, leaving behind only an open notebook on the table. Its pages appeared singed at the edges, and the words inscribed within formed a cryptic warning:
“The cycle is complete, but the price remains unpaid.”
An Eternal Fear
The next morning, the townspeople found the café shuttered, its doors hastily boarded up. Some claimed to have seen shadows dancing inside during the night, as if the building itself bore the weight of the secrets it had sheltered. Others speculated that the Courier and the Snowflake Woman had merged, becoming a single entity that now roamed the snowy streets in search of new truths.
One thing was certain: in that small town, no one dared to speak aloud of what they knew anymore. For the legend had taken a darker turn, and everyone understood that even a whispered word could awaken forces far more terrifying than silence itself.
