Une Rencontre Inattendue
Alors qu’ils approchaient du point marqué sur la carte, Kai sentit l’atmosphère changer. Le silence n’était plus naturel. Les ruines, jusque-là figées et mortes, semblaient soudain animées d’une tension palpable. Umbra s’immobilisa, ses oreilles dressées, le poil hérissé. Kai posa une main sur son flanc, cherchant à calmer son propre souffle.
Un éclat métallique attira son regard. Trop tard.
Des ombres émergèrent des décombres, se mouvant avec une précision inquiétante. Une dizaine de figures vêtues de combinaisons renforcées, leurs armures improvisées faites de plaques de métal et de kevlar usé, se positionnèrent en cercle autour d’eux. Chacun portait une arme lourde, des fusils rudimentaires mais meurtriers, fabriqués à partir des restes de la civilisation passée.
Leur chef, une femme élancée à l’aura glaciale, s’avança. Ses cheveux argentés reflétaient la lumière rougeâtre d’un drone qui survolait la scène, et son regard perçant semblait sonder chaque recoin de l’âme de Kai. Elle portait une combinaison noire renforcée, ornée de symboles mystérieux.
"Je savais que quelqu’un finirait par tomber sur cette carte," dit-elle avec un sourire dénué de chaleur. Sa voix était douce, presque caressante, mais chaque mot résonnait comme une menace.
Kai recula instinctivement, tenant fermement son bracelet. Umbra, immobile à ses côtés, grognait doucement, ses yeux bleus fixant la femme.
"Donne-moi ce bracelet et les documents," reprit-elle, son ton s’aiguisant, "ou tu ne sortiras pas vivant d’ici."
Kai serra les dents. "Et si je refuse ?"
Un éclat de rire froid jaillit des lèvres de la femme, résonnant comme un glas. "Refuser ? Tu ne comprends pas, enfant. Ces informations valent plus que ta vie. Avec elles, on peut contrôler ce qui reste de ce monde. Alors… sois raisonnable."
Kai ne répondit pas, mais son esprit tournait à toute vitesse. La femme claqua des doigts, et les soldats levèrent leurs armes, visant directement Kai et Umbra.
"Je vais compter jusqu’à trois," dit-elle calmement. "Un…"
Un grondement sourd secoua soudain l’air. Avant que quiconque ne puisse réagir, Umbra bondit des ombres, un éclair noir et argenté. Le loup fondit sur l’un des soldats, ses crocs s’enfonçant dans le bras qui tenait une arme. L’homme cria, lâchant son fusil, tandis qu’Umbra pivotait déjà pour se jeter sur un autre adversaire.
La diversion offrit à Kai l’opportunité dont il avait besoin. Il s’élança dans une ruelle étroite, ses jambes propulsées par une adrénaline qu’il ne savait même pas posséder. "Umbra, viens !" cria-t-il.
Le loup, malgré la fureur du combat, réagit immédiatement, se retirant d’un bond élégant et rejoignant Kai. Les soldats, désorientés, se mirent à tirer, mais leurs balles ricochèrent contre les murs effondrés des ruines.
"Après eux !" hurla la femme argentée, furieuse.
Le duo s’enfonça dans le dédale de gravats et de structures abandonnées. Chaque pas les rapprochait du salut, mais chaque détour semblait aussi les piéger davantage. Les soldats connaissaient mieux le terrain, et leurs voix se rapprochaient.
Une explosion retentit derrière eux, probablement une grenade destinée à les déloger. Kai trébucha, le souffle de l’explosion le projetant au sol. Umbra le poussa du museau, l’aidant à se relever.
"Ils ne nous lâcheront pas," murmura Kai, essoufflé.
Le loup grogna en réponse, comme pour confirmer ses craintes.
La Fuite
Kai aperçut une silhouette massive devant eux : une ancienne usine abandonnée. Des tuyaux rouillés, des cheminées effondrées, et des machines à moitié ensevelies dans la terre témoignaient de son passé industriel. Il se dirigea vers l’entrée principale, espérant y trouver un refuge temporaire.
Une fois à l’intérieur, le silence retomba, à peine troublé par le grincement du métal sous leurs pas. L’obscurité les enveloppa, et Kai activa une petite lampe sur son bracelet, projetant un faisceau bleu tremblant.
Ils progressèrent dans le labyrinthe de couloirs et de salles délabrées, cherchant un endroit sûr où se cacher. Enfin, ils trouvèrent une pièce intacte, un ancien bureau dont les murs semblaient résister au temps. Un terminal informatique trônait sur un bureau couvert de poussière.
Kai s’approcha, essuyant l’écran du revers de sa manche. Miracle : le terminal s’alluma, émettant un faible bourdonnement. Il inséra le disque de données dans un port latéral, et un hologramme s’éleva lentement.
Une carte se matérialisa devant lui, détaillant un réseau complexe de points lumineux reliés entre eux : des centrales énergétiques, des laboratoires, et des bases de données.
"C’est… incroyable," murmura Kai, fasciné.
Mais son émerveillement fut de courte durée. Une voix résonna dans la pièce, froide et maîtrisée :
"Impressionnant, n’est-ce pas ?"
Kai se retourna précipitamment. La femme argentée se tenait dans l’embrasure de la porte, accompagnée d’un homme imposant qui portait une mallette noire. Cette fois, elle était désarmée, mais son expression restait menaçante.
"Je pourrais te tuer ici et maintenant," dit-elle calmement. "Mais ce serait du gâchis."
Kai recula, plaçant instinctivement sa main sur le bracelet. "Pourquoi me suivre ? Vous voulez juste vendre ça, comme les autres ?"
La femme secoua la tête, un sourire énigmatique jouant sur ses lèvres. "Non. Nous ne sommes pas comme eux. Je fais partie d’un groupe nommé Aurora. Nous avons juré de protéger les fragments de savoir encore existants."
Elle ouvrit la mallette, révélant des documents et des dispositifs holographiques. L’un d’eux montrait une vidéo : des scientifiques s’affairaient dans un laboratoire, leurs visages tendus par la concentration.
"Ce savoir pourrait reconstruire le monde, mais il pourrait aussi le détruire," poursuivit-elle. "Nous avons besoin de toi, Kai. Et de ce loup."
Elle fixa Umbra, qui grognait faiblement, ses yeux brillants d’une intelligence farouche.
"Umbra n’est pas une simple créature," ajouta-t-elle. "C’est un gardien. Un vestige d’une époque où les hommes savaient encore protéger ce qui comptait."
Kai resta silencieux, luttant contre le tourbillon de questions et de doutes dans son esprit. La femme tendit une main.
"Nous n’avons pas le temps pour les hésitations. Fais le bon choix."
L’esprit de Kai vacilla. Devait-il leur faire confiance
An Unexpected Encounter
As they neared the marked point on the map, Kai felt the atmosphere shift. The silence was no longer natural. The ruins, previously still and lifeless, seemed suddenly filled with a palpable tension. Umbra froze, ears perked, fur bristling. Kai placed a hand on his side, trying to steady his own breath.
A metallic glint caught his eye. Too late.
Shadows emerged from the debris, moving with eerie precision. A dozen figures in reinforced suits, their makeshift armor crafted from metal plates and worn kevlar, positioned themselves in a circle around them. Each carried a heavy weapon, rudimentary but deadly rifles made from the remnants of the old world.
Their leader, a tall woman with an icy aura, stepped forward. Her silver hair reflected the reddish light of a drone hovering above the scene, and her piercing gaze seemed to probe every corner of Kai's soul. She wore a black reinforced suit adorned with mysterious symbols.
"I knew someone would eventually stumble upon this map," she said with a smile devoid of warmth. Her voice was soft, almost caressing, but every word echoed like a threat.
Kai instinctively took a step back, gripping his bracelet tightly. Umbra, motionless at his side, growled softly, his blue eyes fixed on the woman.
"Give me that bracelet and the documents," she continued, her tone sharpening, "or you won't leave here alive."
Kai clenched his teeth. "And what if I refuse?"
A cold laugh erupted from the woman's lips, ringing like a death knell. "Refuse? You don't understand, child. This information is worth more than your life. With it, we can control what remains of this world. So… be reasonable."
Kai didn’t respond, but his mind raced. The woman snapped her fingers, and the soldiers raised their weapons, aiming directly at Kai and Umbra.
"I’ll count to three," she said calmly. "One…"
A low rumble suddenly shook the air. Before anyone could react, Umbra leapt from the shadows, a flash of black and silver. The wolf pounced on one of the soldiers, sinking his fangs into the arm holding a weapon. The man screamed, dropping his rifle, while Umbra pivoted and launched himself at another foe.
The distraction gave Kai the opportunity he needed. He darted into a narrow alley, his legs propelled by an adrenaline he didn’t even know he had. "Umbra, come!" he shouted.
The wolf, despite the fury of the battle, reacted immediately, gracefully pulling away and joining Kai. The soldiers, disoriented, began shooting, but their bullets ricocheted off the collapsed walls of the ruins.
"After them!" screamed the silver-haired woman, furious.
The pair plunged deeper into the maze of rubble and abandoned structures. Every step brought them closer to safety, but every turn seemed to trap them further. The soldiers knew the terrain better, and their voices were getting closer.
An explosion rang out behind them, likely a grenade meant to flush them out. Kai stumbled, the blast’s shockwave throwing him to the ground. Umbra nudged him with his snout, helping him get back on his feet.
"They won’t let us go," Kai murmured, breathless.
The wolf growled in response, as if confirming his fears.
The Escape
Kai spotted a massive silhouette ahead: an abandoned factory. Rusted pipes, collapsed chimneys, and machines half-buried in the earth testified to its industrial past. He headed toward the main entrance, hoping to find temporary refuge.
Once inside, silence descended again, barely disturbed by the creaking metal beneath their feet. Darkness enveloped them, and Kai activated a small light on his bracelet, casting a trembling blue beam.
They moved through the labyrinth of corridors and decaying rooms, searching for a safe place to hide. Finally, they found an intact room, an old office whose walls seemed to resist the passage of time. A computer terminal sat on a desk covered in dust.
Kai approached, wiping the screen with his sleeve. Miraculously, the terminal powered on, emitting a faint hum. He inserted the data disk into a side port, and a hologram slowly rose.
A map materialized before him, detailing a complex network of points of light connected to one another: power plants, laboratories, and data hubs.
"This is… incredible," Kai murmured, fascinated.
But his amazement was short-lived. A voice echoed in the room, cold and controlled:
"Impressive, isn’t it?"
Kai turned sharply. The silver-haired woman stood in the doorway, accompanied by a large man carrying a black briefcase. This time, she was unarmed, but her expression remained threatening.
"I could kill you here and now," she said calmly. "But that would be a waste."
Kai backed away, instinctively placing his hand on the bracelet. "Why follow me? Just want to sell it, like the others?"
The woman shook her head, an enigmatic smile playing on her lips. "No. We’re not like them. I’m part of a group called Aurora. We’ve sworn to protect the remaining fragments of knowledge."
She opened the briefcase, revealing documents and holographic devices. One of them displayed a video: scientists were busy in a lab, their faces tense with concentration.
"This knowledge could rebuild the world, but it could also destroy it," she continued. "We need you, Kai. And this wolf."
She fixed her gaze on Umbra, who was growling softly, his eyes gleaming with fierce intelligence.
"Umbra isn’t just a creature," she added. "He’s a guardian. A remnant of a time when men still knew how to protect what mattered."
Kai remained silent, struggling against the whirlwind of questions and doubts in his mind. The woman extended a hand.
"We don’t have time for hesitation. Make the right choice."
Kai’s mind wavered. Should he trust them?
