Part 4
The Path of the Forgotten
His mind still unsettled by the strange encounter, Lucien took a deep breath and turned toward the silent ruins. Despite his anxiety, something within him urged him to press on. This place was not merely a relic of the past. It held a truth he needed to uncover.
They moved slowly through the dilapidated structures. The ground was littered with fragments of carved stone, abandoned objects, and frescoes eroded by time. Hubert stopped in front of a partially collapsed wall and ran his fingers over an inscription half-buried in dust.
— "This symbol... It looks like the one we saw on the tree where Gaspard inserted the gold coin."
Lucien stepped closer and squinted. Indeed, the inscription depicted an older version of the glyph carved into the oak. But here, it was accompanied by other symbols, forming some kind of coded message.
— "If we could decipher more..." Lucien murmured.
He scanned the area and spotted a massive door at the far end of the underground city. It was made of polished black metal and appeared strangely intact, as if it had been shielded from the passage of time.
— "We need to see what's behind it."
They approached cautiously.
Hubert placed a hand on the cold surface of the metal.
— "There's an engraving here... a phrase..." He narrowed his eyes to read the nearly faded inscription. "He who seeks without knowing the price will find the end before the beginning."
Lucien felt a tension rise within him.
A warning? A trap?
Before they could ponder further, a deep rumble echoed through the chamber. The ground trembled faintly beneath their feet, and an invisible mechanism seemed to activate.
The door cracked at its center...
Then, slowly, with the sound of stone scraping against metal, it began to open.
A cold wind rushed through the opening.
Lucien and Hubert exchanged one last glance.
Then, summoning their courage, they stepped through the door...
Unaware that beyond it, a far more terrifying truth awaited them.

La Voie des Oubliés
L’esprit encore troublé par cette étrange rencontre, Lucien prit une profonde inspiration et se tourna vers les ruines silencieuses. Malgré son angoisse, quelque chose en lui le poussait à avancer. Ce lieu n’était pas un simple vestige du passé. Il renfermait une vérité qu’il devait découvrir.
Ils progressèrent lentement à travers les bâtiments délabrés. Le sol était jonché de fragments de pierre sculptée, d’objets abandonnés et de fresques érodées par le temps. Hubert s’arrêta devant un mur partiellement effondré et passa les doigts sur une inscription à moitié ensevelie sous la poussière.
— « Ce symbole… Il ressemble à celui qu’on a vu sur l’arbre où Gaspard a inséré la pièce d’or. »
Lucien s’approcha et plissa les yeux. En effet, l’inscription représentait une version plus ancienne du glyphe gravé sur le chêne. Mais ici, il était accompagné d’autres symboles, formant une sorte de message codé.
— « Si nous pouvions en déchiffrer plus… » murmura Lucien.
Il balaya la zone du regard et aperçut une porte massive à l’autre bout de la cité souterraine. Elle était faite d’un métal noir poli et paraissait étrangement intacte, comme si elle avait été protégée du temps.
— « Il faut voir ce qu’il y a derrière. »
Ils s’approchèrent prudemment.
Hubert posa une main sur la surface froide du métal.
— « Il y a une gravure ici… une phrase… » Il plissa les yeux pour lire l’inscription presque effacée. « Celui qui cherche sans connaître le prix trouvera la fin avant le début. »
Lucien sentit une tension monter en lui.
Une mise en garde ? Un piège ?
Avant qu’ils n’aient eu le temps de réfléchir davantage, un grondement profond résonna dans la salle. La terre trembla légèrement sous leurs pieds, et un mécanisme invisible sembla s’activer.
La porte se fissura en son centre…
Puis, lentement, dans un bruit de pierre raclant le métal, elle commença à s’ouvrir.
Un vent froid s’engouffra dans l’ouverture.
Lucien et Hubert échangèrent un dernier regard.
Puis, prenant leur courage à deux mains, ils franchirent la porte…
Sans savoir que derrière elle, une vérité bien plus terrifiante les attendait.
