Chapter 13

The Price of Knowledge

Lucien felt the weight of these revelations crash down on him like an anvil. His mind swirled between fascination and dread. Who was he really, to be so closely tied to the Kingdom of Secrets?

— "Explain it to me, Hubert," he asked, his throat tight. "Why am I involved in all of this?"

Hubert closed the large grimoire with palpable gravity. He placed a hand on Lucien's shoulder.
— "Because you are the last heir of Eldrin."

Lucien recoiled.
— "That’s impossible! I have no connection to this kingdom; I’m just a historian!"

Hubert gave a sad smile.
— "Do you think fate leaves things to chance? You have always had a thirst for knowledge, an irresistible attraction to forgotten mysteries. That is no coincidence, Lucien. It is in your blood. Eldrin never had children... but he left behind a lineage of guardians. And today, the last of them is you."

Lucien closed his eyes for a moment, trying to stem the tide of emotions overwhelming him. He remembered the stories his grandfather had told him about lost artifacts and secrets buried underground. Was this the truth he had been unknowingly searching for all along?

But there was no time for reflection. A deep rumble echoed outside. A distant sound, like an earthquake beneath their feet. Hubert turned pale.
— "They’re coming."

— "Who?" Lucien asked, scanning the library around them.

— "Those who want the secret to remain buried forever."

Without hesitation, Hubert grabbed a small medallion hanging from his neck and pressed it against a carved stone slab. A hidden door opened in the rock, revealing a narrow passage leading deeper into the kingdom.

— "Follow me! If you want to know the whole truth, you must see with your own eyes what Eldrin left behind."

Lucien hesitated, his heart pounding. Should he plunge further into this abyss of mysteries, or try to escape before it was too late?

But deep down, he knew there was no other choice.

Taking a deep breath, he stepped into the shadows of the passage, unaware that what he was about to discover would shake not only his own destiny but that of the entire world.

Chapitre 13

Lucien sentit le poids de ces révélations s’abattre sur lui comme une enclume. Son esprit tourbillonnait entre fascination et effroi. Qui était-il vraiment pour être ainsi lié au Royaume des Secrets ?

— "Explique-moi, Hubert," demanda-t-il, la gorge nouée. "Pourquoi suis-je impliqué dans tout cela ?"

Hubert referma le grand grimoire avec une gravité palpable. Il posa une main sur l’épaule de Lucien.
— "Parce que tu es le dernier héritier d’Eldrin."

Lucien eut un mouvement de recul.
— "C’est impossible ! Je n’ai aucun lien avec ce royaume, je suis un simple historien !"

Hubert esquissa un sourire triste.
— "Tu crois que le destin laisse les choses au hasard ? Tu as toujours eu soif de savoir, une attirance irrésistible pour les mystères oubliés. Ce n’est pas une coïncidence, Lucien. C’est dans ton sang. Eldrin n’a jamais eu d’enfants... mais il a laissé derrière lui une lignée de gardiens. Et aujourd’hui, le dernier d’entre eux, c’est toi."

Lucien ferma les yeux un instant, tentant d’endiguer la vague d’émotions qui le submergeait. Il se souvenait des histoires racontées par son grand-père sur des artefacts disparus et des secrets cachés sous terre. Était-ce là la vérité qu’il avait toujours cherché, sans même le savoir ?

Mais il n’y avait pas de temps pour la réflexion. Un bruit sourd résonna à l’extérieur. Un écho lointain, comme un tremblement de terre sous leurs pieds. Hubert blêmit.
— "Ils arrivent."

— "Qui ça ?" demanda Lucien en scrutant la bibliothèque autour d’eux.

— "Ceux qui veulent que le secret reste enfoui à jamais."

Sans plus attendre, Hubert attrapa un petit médaillon suspendu à son cou et le pressa contre une dalle gravée. Une porte cachée s’ouvrit dans la pierre, révélant un passage étroit s’enfonçant plus profondément dans le royaume.

— "Suis-moi ! Si tu veux connaître toute la vérité, tu dois voir de tes propres yeux ce qu’Eldrin a laissé derrière lui."

Lucien hésita, le cœur battant. Devait-il s’enfoncer plus loin dans cet abîme de mystères ou tenter de fuir avant qu’il ne soit trop tard ?

Mais au fond de lui, il savait qu’il n’y avait pas d’autre choix.

Prenant une profonde inspiration, il s’engouffra dans l’ombre du passage, ignorant encore que ce qu’il allait découvrir allait bouleverser non seulement son destin, mais aussi celui du monde entier.
