Drake Hollow review

Drake Hollow for me is an indie game that is quite interesting despite its certain limitations. Combining elements of base building and simulation, and traveling in an open world in a procedural world, to semi-RPG concepts to equip us with various weapons against enemies, this game itself has succeeded in making me forget the time when playing.

As an indie game, Drake Hollow displays 3D graphics that can be considered simplistic or cartoonist. However, it can still feel amazing through the various environmental details that are worked on. Whether it's from building designs, vegetation, trees, to various assets that can complement each other.

Meanwhile, the music and audio itself are carried in a quite mysterious and calmer impression. Even the size of the game is not large, this game can even provide shocks through the sound of enemies that you have to face in Drake Hollow.

Story

Drake Hollow tells the story of our role in this game as a teenager who seems to have run away from his family and loved ones. While daydreaming about this decision, suddenly he was approached by a mysterious crow.

This bird in particular wants to invite you to go to his world through a magic door and ask you to help clean up something there. Arriving in another world, the main character finds a letter asking him to help and protect the Drake, small vegetable-shaped creatures who are weak and very afraid of mysterious beasts. We will find out about what place the world is and what creatures we are actually protecting and fighting against.

Gameplay

When we really start our adventure in this game, in general, we will be more busy exploring the world you are currently in, as well as taking care of the welfare of the Drake creatures at the base. In taking care of them, the impression of survival is the strongest theme here. We are required to explore many areas in order to find many resources that are open world in a level design that runs procedurally random. The form of application itself is quite unique. Because the world that is displayed in this game is in a format like exploring islands between islands.

Although the edges still feel limited, for an overview the variations in the levels can be said to be numerous. We can find many islands with various forms of landscape topography that are not too repetitive. For example, in one island, some contain houses, factory buildings, funerals, gas stations, baseball fields, and other. From the results of the resources and interesting items obtained during looting, we later need to return to the residence of the Drake to provide them with food and drink resources.

And for the features of building facilities, of course, they are really very implemented here. There are many things that we can build later, such as beds, toys, wells, fences, walls to sophisticated facilities that require electrical energy or dirty water. Incidentally, that too is gradually being curtailed by the use of the camp level system that is tied to the existence of our Drake.

The existence of monsters that often terrorize the Hollow world is the main reason why we have to fight in this game. They will not only appear to disturb us, but are also ready to attack the Drake who are in the base at any time. The melee fighting gameplay mechanism presented is actually very simple. Where the controls feel stiff, we can only do 3 hit normal attacks, jump attacks, and do more defensive things like dodge, dash, and guarding.

There are only 2 types of melee weapon classes presented. Namely only for weapons used with 1 and 2 hands. Even then, it is also limited by the existence of the durablity system, your weapon can be destroyed over time. Even so, the existence of interesting variations of various models of weapon skins and the statistics of their use seem to cover up these limitations.

Apart from the essence of its simple combat gameplay, what actually makes combat gameplay in Drake Hollow feel interesting or positive comes from the many additional aspects of other elements that are very effective in supporting the playing experience. Apart from being able to take advantage of projectile types of weapons such as pistols, arrows, balloon launchers, to weed spray with various forms of mechanisms, this game brings many RPG-style concepts through the secret use of the Drakes.

And each Drake has a variety of buff functions that are so different for our characters. Its effectiveness can be further strengthened from the results of their evolutionary development. One of the buffs that perhaps feels the most interesting is the one that can give a fire element effect to a weapon. In addition, there are also buffs that can increase our fighting ability in delivering critical damage, attack speed, and even lifesteal attack effects.

Meanwhile from the point of view of the enemy being faced, the thing that can be criticized most seems to come from the number of variants that are too small. However, in each of its certain variants, they have a characteristic tendency that should be watched out for.

Facing a wolf-shaped enemy is arguably the most annoying for me. Because apart from being able to pull out a that could explode immediately if I stepped over it, this enemy also had the ability to summon reinforcements to make the battle feel even more challenging. So that the approach presented seems quite far from the casual standard. Especially when attacked by many wolves, I wouldn't be able to do much if I only relied on the use of weapons. So I had to be forced to be smart in maximizing the functions of various items and crafting features. Whether it's to use items that can distract the enemy, restore health, and set bomb traps.

And this game is not left behind with the multiplayer feature. Playing multiplayer in Drake Hollow can give an added dimension that feels fun and makes the gameplay feel easier to live with. By accommodating a maximum of 4 players in online co-op via the invite feature. We will work hand in hand to take care of the base we have.

The communication aspect is of course the most emphasized thing. Especially in planning steps to want to split up or explore each other together. Not to mention when you talk about the approach you want to use in building a really solid defense base from enemy threats.

Honestly this game feels easy and simple starting from fast and easy battles, even though it feels a bit difficult if I mingle with many enemies at the same time. And in terms of the building itself is also simple. The soundtrack and beautiful graphics make me feel happy playing this game for a long time..
