The pea puffer, also known as the dwarf pufferfish, are slow little creatures that rely on inflatable skin spikes for protection. The spiked skin on pea puffer fish is usually inflated even when the pea puffer itself isn't inflated, discouraging predators from wanting to eat them without risking cutting open their mouths. Due to the amount of pea puffers kept in captivity they are not considered endangered yet, but sadly their population is slowly declining and they've been labeled as 'vulnerable' according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Where are they from?

Pea puffers can be found in freshwater in southwest India. They usually live at the bottom of vegetated bodies of water. It is there that they hunt for even smaller fish and other tiny water creatures for food. Pea puffers can be found in large groups in the wild, which is different than many other types of puffer fish. They lay eggs throughout most of the year and like many creatures their main predator are humans due to the amount taken for captivity and loss of habitat.

Short and cute

The pea puffer is the smallest puffer fish in the world, hence the given name. The largest pea puffer can only grow to roughly 3.5 cm.

Call a dentist

All pufferfish, including pea puffers, have four teeth – two at the top and two at the bottom. These teeth are triangular in shape and interlock with each other. If not trimmed, these teeth might overgrow to the point where the puffers cannot eat anymore. In the wild they are able to avoid this by gnawing on snails and small stones to file their teeth.

Adorable not deadly

When you think of a Pufferfish you probably think of a spiny saltwater fish that blows up like a balloon and poisonous to the touch. However, this is not the case with the Pea Puffer. They can still puff up however they are not poisonous like their saltwater cousins.

We will continue to show more information on these fish as time comes. More information can be read about these fish HERE.

That's all we have for today shop keeps! Keep an eye out for our next WhitePaper post where we will go into detail about AquaShop and the game we are developing. Expect to see more of these Stock logs soon!
