This is a review of a game " The Outer Worlds". The Outer Worlds is an action role-playing game developed by Obsidian Entertainment. Obsidians were responsible for the original Fallout games and also Fallout New Vegas and The Outer Worlds does feel like a fallout spin-off set in space. You start the game cryogenically frozen with other colonists aimlessly drifting through space in the hope. A scientist called Phineas Wells manages to revive you and gives you a basic outline of the poor state of the halcyon colony.

The basic story is you have to help Phineas find resources to revive the remaining hope colonists at this point you get to create your own character you can choose from a variety of face types and customized things like hairstyles, scars, facial hair, and various elements of your facial features. Overall it's a pretty good character creator but one thing I have found curious was that you don't actually see your character during gameplay or the narrative sections so being able to make your own face does feel a little bit pointless anyway once you have created your character you get jettisoned down to Terra and that's where the gameplay starts in Ernest.

What is the game like to play?

Well anyone familiar with Fallout will feel right at home here it's a first-person role-playing game with lots of narrative choices and ranged or melee combat. It's really the freedom of choice that sets this game apart from other RPGs because in this game you literally can do what you want if you get fed up of fetch quests and you just want to take what you need you can or you can try to persuade characters to help you can do best for them or you can just shoot them all and steal it it's refreshing to see a game that gives the player so much freedom of expression in gameplay and in narrative choices. The game is set on a variety of planets and each one has their own unique style and characters once you acquire a ship you will start to assemble your own unique crew overtime. There are lots of potential crewmates and it's up to you who you take with you on your journey and once the crew starts to grow that's really where the game starts to excel. It reminded me a little bit of Mass Effect 2 in that regard as you get to choose who you share your journey with and your crewmates can also accompany you into combat and they're very useful because they have special powers and they can use items weapons that you can equip so you're not just developing your character in the game you're also developing your crew.

You can build up your unique stats via leveling up or add perks or you can do this for yourself or your crew. The combat it's pretty smooth pretty slick and your companions really do help when it all kicks off you have a special slow-motion skill and all the weapons can be repaired modded or even scrapped into base parts for use on the work benches throughout the game. I guess you could call it a looter shooter as the amount of stuff lying around here is insane as I said the game worlds that pretty interesting however there are a lot of loading times between areas and this can be a bit annoying because it's not a completely large open world but the loading screens they do look great because they have this kind of sort of conceptual art work that suits in with the tone of the game so it's nice to look at but they do last a while and when you go for two or three loading times very quickly you know in close proximity you can negatively affect on the gamer mentum it does kind of take you out of the experience. The enemies that res varied as you would expect you have got all sorts of weird alien creatures human raiders military and so many different types is really impressive. One of my favorite features was the ability to intimidate or persuade people in conversations the more you level up those skills the more you can influence and it's a really great time saver when you avoid a bloodbath by just convincing someone to give you an item instead of creating a shootout saying that if your board of fetch quests and you can't be asked you can just completely go rogue.

It's one of the most satisfying moments in the game when someone asks you to go fetch something for the 10th time and you just think now let's rock and roll and take them out and their crew take the item and go about my business. However, it does have an effect on the future game moments because you know if you kill lots of key characters and you don't do certain things certain sections that follow that may be more difficult. Overall the outer worlds is a well-constructed RPG it may be a little bit slow in the beginning like for the first five and six hours I wasn't really that impressed or engaged but once I started to build my crew level up and understand how everything worked it became much more enjoyable the one thing that really makes the game worth playing are the excellent characters you'll get to meet throughout your adventure the cast is so well crafted the characters are really in-depth they're funny that well-written they're well acted and all of those things really do elevate the game experience the game has a cool retro space art style similar to kind of Buck Rogers Battlestar Galactica or Star Trek the animation the environments weapons everything all the effects well so they're well suited the art style is really nice and it has a quirkiness and it's just a really nice game to look at visually the in-game music is excellent and it has that old sci-fi TV show feel to it the voice acting is exceptional and the dialogue is as good as any other game available on the PS4 the narrative is excellent sense of humor is really hilarious and the acting team just deliver everything really really nicely. The sounds effects are good although the audio levels they're a little bit unbalanced like some of the special effects for your companions are so loud they nearly made me deaf at one point but thankfully you can customize the levels in the menus.

What's Good and What's Bad?

What's good: It's a well-written story with excellent narrative choices and great voice acting. The way you build your own crew for your ship really adds depth to the experience. The game gives you real freedom of choice in both narrative and gameplay the character customization is good and the stats and perks let you create your own unique protagonist. The art style and the visuals are unique and quirky and the in-game music is awesome
What's bad: The game is a bit of a slow starter and it takes a little while to get going the loading times can be a bit long-winded and some of the audio level balancing does need a little bit of work

What is the verdict?

The Outer Worlds is a good solid RPG that Fallout's fans will love. It's well-written, well-structured and slowly but surely the game will win you over but for the first few hours it is a little bit underwhelming. It's not the best RPG I have ever played but it's not the worst. It's a good solid experience and most people will enjoy it. You know I am a fan of games like Skyrim, The Witcher, the Fallout series So, I immediately enjoyed the kind of style of the game, the dialogue driven options, the combat but you know it doesn't break any ground it's not a revolutionary game it's just another good RPG that if you have got time to put into it you will get a lot out of it

I've been looking forward to trying out this game, so good to hear that fans of Fallout etc should like it! 🙂

I was waiting for it to get onto the steam store, which was going to be a year after it was released elsewhere... but I just got the pc xbox game pass and saw it on there, so am planning on giving it a try soon! 😄

You should give it a try. You will love it.🥰🥰
