Welcome to Another Review
Not A Hero is a side-scrolling tactical shooter developed by roll seven. The game is available on the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Android. The plot revolves around a purple rabbit BunnyLord, who travels back in time to be elected as mayor to save the world from an alien invasion. The levels consist of various situations or objectives relating to the election campaign where you play as a selection of anti-heroes to clean up the crime epidemic and help the bunny lord win the election.
Before you jump into the levels, you get to choose your anti-hero and the characters are absolutely fantastic, they're silly over the top and full of charm and comedy value. Each character has different weapons and skills and they all come with their own signature voiceovers that are hilarious. The levels consist of different objectives like killing criminals putting up election posters and many other variations.
Once the objectives are complete you head to the exit and the bunny lord will extract you from the area so it's a side-scrolling shooter but it's not as gung ho as some other games in the genre. You can use tactical cover to hide from enemies or pick them off one shot at a time. Reloading is manual so you have to think about how many bullets you've got left in the chamber before you breach a new room.
You can slide tackle and do some close-range executions which are brutal and satisfying, as you explore the levels you'll unlock special ammunition or weapons that can help turn the tide against the hordes of criminals. Unfortunately, there isn't any multiplayer or co-op option, that's a bit of a shame because it's really it really could have been a great fun experience to play with two people but there you go. So, in regards to the gameplay, it's fast-paced good shooting with some nice tactical elements.
In terms of graphics, the game is very colorful and vibrant. It's simple and it has that pixel style of the good old retro days but it does work. The in-game music is nothing to write home about but does the job, it's fine, it's just classic retro stuff. The sound effects are loud and satisfying but it's the comedy voice-overs that really just make the playable characters stand out. Developers clearly have a good sense of humor and the voices really just add a great level of enjoyment to the experience.
The gameplay is fast smooth and tactical, playable characters are varied and have hilarious voices, it's very addictive and it's one of the most enjoyable indie titles I've played. while the game doesn't have any two-player co-op option and the levels can be a little bit samey.
Final Thoughts
This game is a great little indie game that's enjoyable and fairly challenging. The levels are well designed and the playable characters are pure comedy gold. It's a bit of a shame there isn't co-op but you know it's still a really enjoyable indie side-scrolling shooter, and you could do a lot worse than this game. It's well made well designed and it's a good fun shooter also if you enjoyed this then I would recommend you check out another game called Door Kickers which is similar but a little bit more tactical and probably a better game on the whole.
