Shorts are great for growing subscribers to a channel but sadly pretty useless for much else unless you manage to get millions of views on each one. A subscriber from shorts very rarely translate to a long form viewer. I considered making them for a while after they enabled monetization for them but for a channel like mine with 2,7k subs it doesn't feel worth it when I'll have to get roughly 40k views on a short to earn the same as 1k views on a long.
Your work is able to be appreciated. I understand, you are not much interested in channel before but that's amazing that you have uploaded many videos than your subscribers.

I made some youtube shorts about my art but they barely got any views and no new subscribers. Now I started making let's plays with commentary but I find it hard to find what to say.

I got a similar idea for my written content at some point in time next year start making videos and same as in any other platform I think short length content will eventually take over all platforms as the taste for short content keeps expanding, I dont use Youtube per say but do consume its content, there goes my Subscribe still 🤘
I prefer videos rather than shorts. Youtube made it so difficult to have videos monetized. Well, this is centralization. You have to do what they want. Also, any video platform on HIVE would never compete with Youtube as 7-day revenue on vlog is not sensible, imo.
Amazing work on growing your channel. The introduction of short form content really has changed the strategy for social media promotion. Even though I'm not so much of a shorts fan, I definitely have been able to find other channels through them. By the way, you have my support. 👍
I honestly prefer Tiktok, the ease of going viral there is impressive, I have a few videos doing reviews and they get good views.
Succeed on Youtube is really hard, especially if you are making gaming content because there are too many gaming channels. I hope they change the monetization requirement for other territories, because there still several countries where you need to reach 1000 subscribers to been able to monetize.
