Recently completed Death Stranding Director's Cut so I thought I'd share my quick thoughts on the good and bad of the game.

Summary

Death Stranding is a game that divides opinion. Some players adore its unique gameplay, catchy story, and stunning visuals, while others find it slow, confusing, and even boring. But for those who appreciate the mind-bending weirdness of Hideo Kojima's vision, Death Stranding can be a truly unforgettable experience.

The Good

Unique gameplay: Death Stranding is not your typical action game. As Sam Porter Bridges, a courier tasked with reconnecting a shattered America, you'll spend most of your time trekking across a desolate landscape, delivering cargo and avoiding otherworldly threats. The core gameplay loop of managing your weight, navigating the terrain, and building infrastructure is surprisingly satisfying, and there's a real sense of accomplishment in overcoming the challenges the game throws your way.

Catchy story: The story of Death Stranding is complex and cryptic, but it's also incredibly engaging. Kojima's signature blend of science fiction, philosophy, and pop culture references keeps you guessing until the very end.

Stunning visuals: The world of Death Stranding is breathtakingly beautiful. From the towering mountains and lush forests to the eerie BTs and the neon-lit cities, every environment is meticulously crafted and visually stunning.

Great soundtrack: The soundtrack by Ludvig Forssell is one of the best in recent memory, and it perfectly complements the game's atmosphere. Also discovered Low Roar from here which is an excellent companion piece to the game.

The Bad

Slow pace: Death Stranding is a **slow **game. The prologue is particularly long, and even after you're "free" to explore the world, the pace remains deliberate. Some players may find this frustrating.

Confusing story: The story of Death Stranding is not always easy to follow. Kojima loves to throw in obscure references and cryptic symbolism, which can be alienating to some players.

Repetitive gameplay: While the core gameplay loop is satisfying, it can become repetitive after a while. There's not a lot of variety in terms of activities, and some players may find themselves wishing for more to do. Classic Kojima though.

Overall

Death Stranding is a unique and unforgettable game that will not be for everyone. If you're looking for a fast-paced action game with a straightforward story, you're probably going to be disappointed. But if you're willing to embrace the slow pace, the weirdness, and the cryptic storytelling, you're in for a truly special experience.

Recommendation

If you're a fan of Hideo Kojima's work, or if you're looking for a game that's unlike anything you've played before, I highly recommend giving Death Stranding a try. Just be patient and be prepared for a wild ride.

If you made it this far, thank you for reading and hope you end up starting your long trek in Death Stranding too :)
