The X-Files is pretty much at the top of my list when it comes to favorite TV shows. It had a long life with an original run of 9 seasons and a couple of movies. Plus a bit of a reboot with two additional seasons much later on. It's not surprising then that a game was made based on this series.
The X-Files Game was released in 1998 which would have been fairly close to the high point of the series' popularity. The game was released for Windows, Mac and the PlayStation. Reviews of all of them were a little mixed but mostly positive and the game sold very well. The PlayStation version probably got the lowest average reviews but I think that comes down to the kinds of games expected for the PlayStation.
The X-Files Game was an impressive production. According to Wikipedia, the design document was over 1,000 pages, the script at least 748 pages, and 6 hours of footage was filmed using Sony Digital Betacam cameras. Development took over 4 years and cost $6 million dollars.
This game is essentially a point and click adventure with video cut scenes. How you respond to other characters in the game affects their attitude toward you. The setting is in the timeline of the third season. The game takes place in Seattle where you play the role of an FBI agent investigating the disappearance of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. A number of characters from the series make appearances including Mulder, Scully, The Lone Gunmen, Skinner, The Smoking Man, and others.
Despite being a big fan of the X-Files, I never really played this game. I think it was because I was never a big fan of full motion video games. However, I did pick it up for the PC years ago on clearance. Anyway, it's one of many on my list that I hope to get to "one day".
Screen shots above are from the PlayStation version of the game and the ad is for the PlayStation version as well.

Books I am reading or have recently read:
A Most Inconvenient Curse by J. H. Fleming
Friends Divided: John Adams and Thomas Jefferson by Gordon S. Wood
Nicholas Nickelby by Charles Dickens (2nd read)
This was one of the better video-based graphical adventure games out there. It plays like an interactive episode, and from what I remember, it actually slots into the continuity since the writers were involved from start to finish. I hope you enjoy it!
The one to avoid is The X-Files: Resist or Serve for the PS2 which wanted to be Resident Evil with some X-Files branding slapped on it. It's not terrible, but it's definitely only for hardcore fans who can overlook some obnoxious gameplay elements.
It definitely sounds like they were careful to slot it into the continuity. It also seems like they spared no expense with regards to production costs.
Yeah, there's very little left un-exploded by the conclusion.
I need to try this out one day.
I love the series, haven't seen heaps but I also watched it when I was younger.
Keen to see how it plays and I think I would enjoy it
I had this on PC back in the day and I just got in again for ps1. I have only PS2 slim console and unfortunately it's not working, seems like it's not compatible
Interesting. I always thought the PS2 was 100% compatible with the PSs1 (though I had the regular model, not the slim...maybe it's not as compatible). Maybe the disk is damaged? Sometimes even a small scratch can cause them not to work, particularly if the CD drive isn't working perfectly.
I've watched far too much X-Files over the years but it never get's old for me, can always just rewatch episodes. Somehow never found the game though, great review I might have to check this out some time.
