Frostrain is a FREE roguelike deck builder videogame where you play the role of the last train conductor roaming the freezing post apocalyptic world in a train hoping to reach the promised land.
So something like Snowpiercer?
Yes.
Like in the movie Snowpiercer, It's in your best interest to keep everyone happy or else they might just boot you out.
You start the game by choosing one of three available conductors(Mr. Lim is the only conductor available at first, while Mrs. Choi and Ms. Joe are unlocked as you complete runs.)
[The art style is really nice.]
At the start of a run you are given a task, to head east and reach the observatory.
[Head east and keep everyone happy, how hard could it be.]
This is the main game screen.
At the top from left to right, is the game speed, how many days you survived, the happiness counter, unhappiness as the days go by, and information on how long until you reach the next node.(the map icon let's you access the map screen.)
At the bottom from left to right, is the level and experience points required to level up, the number of trains, the number of passengers, the "hand" where you are able to have 8 cards at a time, and [Next Drone Supply] which pretty much means you can recycle useless cards in order to get a roll of cards.
To the left side of the screen are synergies, you match train cars of the time type and you get a bonus.
[ I have 3 trains cars of the Central Supply Bureau which activates the synergy, it reduces the time it takes for one cycle to happen.]
[Note: a train car can only be worked by up to three passengers per cycle, passengers are assigned randomly at available train cars.]At the center is your train and train cars, it takes a few second to complete one cycle, each cycle you get happiness and other points depending on the train cars and their synergies.
This is the map screen, you can preselect nodes as a way to make a path for the train to follow. each undiscovered node gives experience points, passengers and a card.
[must be a very big flying drone to carry something as heavy as train cars...]
For every undiscovered node you visit you get to pick a card from a selection, rarity depends on your level so I recommend you choose bronze cars early as you might not see them as much as you later on as you level up.
[Each card have two synergies. denoted to the left and to the right of the card name.]
[Rarity is denoted by the border design, bronze, silver, gold, and Prismatic.]
You can stack duplicates of a card to level it up to the next tier, in the image above, A level 1 Train Design room provides 7 happiness while a level 5 train design room provides 80 happiness.
[ A level 2 card require 2 level 1 card, a Level 5 card requires 2 level 4 cards.]
[Improvement is a synergy bonus that increases train speed]
As the game progresses The deadly snowstorm slowly creeps in from the west and being caught by it nets you a passive source of unhappiness.
As you head east you also encounter difficulties.
as well as visit beautiful places.
There are times where even the strongest of wills are to be tested.
But ultimately with unity and understanding we can achieve great things.
When I rate things, I always use a three-point system.
1 for Bad
2 for Okay
3 for Great
I must point out that I have very low standards and is easily impressed.
so it's very hard for me to give a score of 1,
and very easy for me to give a score of 3.
Frostrain, 2024, 3/3. Pretty Good.
