Promo Cards Reveal
According to Pokebeach more promotional cards have been revealed. The promo cards are from the new set Mythical Island and from the Genetic Apex set (first set in game). I show the pictures without commentary.
Featured Cards From Mythical Island + Reviews
In a previous post I did talk about Mew ex, Blue, Leaf and a few other cards. I don't wish to cover them again. There are even more cards that were not revealed prior to today's release. I just feature a few in terms of playability and maybe art.
Snivy, Servine & Serperior
Serperior is the one in this trio that stands out a lot. The ability makes each Grass Energy attached to your Grass Pokemon provide 2 Grass Energy. When it says that the effect does not stack it means that if you have two Serperior in play then you do not have 1 Grass Energy turns into 4 Grass Energy for a Grass Pokemon.
This Serperior provides very good Grass Energy acceleration. Because Serperior is a Stage 2 Pokemon it does take time to get this into play. You can combo Serperior with something like Dhelmise or Celebi ex (see below).
I am not sure if Serperior and Venusaur ex is a good deck. Having two Stage 2 evolution lines is slow.
Celebi ex
Celebi ex is a 130 HP Basic Grass Pokemon with one retreat cost and Fire weakness. The Powerful Bloom attack requires one Grass Energy and one Colourless Energy. Flip a coin for each Energy attached to Celebi ex. Deal 50 damage for each heads. At the minimum you flip two coins. There is a 25% of dealing 0 damage, 50% for 50 damage (HT or TH out of 4 outcomes) and 25% chance for dealing 100 damage.
Combine this with Serperior to add more energy to Celebi ex for more coin flipping. Celebi ex in theory can deal one hit knockouts on anything if there is a lot of Energy and if you get lucky.
Morelull & Shiinotic
Morelull as a Grass basic Pokemon is not too bad. One grass Energy for 20 damage is good.
Shiinotic is the Stage 1 evolution of Morelull. It has 90 HP, two retreat cost and Fire weakness. The attack of Flickering Spores requires two Grass Energy, it does 50 damage plus automatic Sleep to the opponent's Active Pokemon. For the opponent this Shiinotic is pretty annoying. You need to flip heads in between turns to remove the Sleep condition.
New Versions of Ponyta & Rapidash
This new Ponyta is kind of dangerous. For one Fire Energy you do 10 base damage. If you flip a heads then the Stomp attack does 10 plus 30 damage. Fourty damage for one Energy for a Basic Pokemon is powerful. Add 20 damage for weakness makes Stomp do 60 damage if heads.
The previous Rapidash does 40 damage for one Fire Energy. This one requires one Fire Energy and one Colourless Energy to do 40 base damage. If you flip heads then you do 60 more damage.
Rapidash can be comboed with the supporter card Blaine. Blaine adds 30 more damage for a Rapdiash, Ninetales or Magmar. The Rising Lunge attack would then do 70 base damage. If you get heads with Blaine and this Rapdiash then you do 130 damage. This 130 damage is knockout territory on weaker Pokemon ex like Pikachu ex, Mew ex and Celebi ex.
Magikarp & Gyarados ex
Magikarp is typically a weak Pokemon until it evolves to Gyarados. The Leap Out attack from Magikarp is a retreating type of attack. Use Leap Out to bring your Magikarp to the bench.
For whatever reason, Gyarados cards as of late tend to have unreasonable attack costs in the trading card game. This one is no different.
The HP on this is quite high at 180HP for a Stage 1 Pokemon ex. The Rampaging Whirlpool attack requires 3 Water Energy and one Colourless Energy. This attack does 140 damage with the effect of discarding a random Energy from all Pokemon on both sides with Energy attached.
If you can get this attack off on Gyarados ex I suppose you have a good chance of winning the game. 140 damage is quite big and Energy removal is quite powerful. Misty the supporter with good luck helps.
Finneon & Lumineon
Finneon is a decent Basic Water Pokemon attacker with a one Water Energy attack for 20 damage.
Lumineon is kind of interesting. It does have a zero retreat cost. The Aqua Liner attack requires two Water Energy to do 50 damage to one of your opponent's Benched Pokemon (not active). You can also attack any of the opponent's Benched Pokemon too. Bench hitting attacks are useful if the opponent has a weak Pokemon on the Bench and/or if the opponent's Active Pokemon is not able to attack. This Lumineon could be in the metagame but there are a lot of good Water Pokemon choices and decks though.
Edit: Fixed a few typos here.
New Versions Of Pikachu & Raichu
This new Pikachu is a scaled down version of Pikachu ex. For one Lightning Energy to you do 10 damage for each Benched Lightning Pokemon.
The new Raichu is interesting. Gigashock requires 3 Lightning Energy to do 60 damage plus 20 damage for each of your opponent's Benched Pokemon. It is a damage spread attack. In theory you can get multiple knockouts with Raichu. This Raichu can be combined with the Lt. Surge supporter card.
Joltik & Galvantula
Joltik is a very dangerous Basic Pokemon attacker. One Lightning Energy to do 30 damage is very good. The bad part is that it has 40 HP which can be one hit by Farfetch'd.
Galvantula here is a very dangerous attacker in my opinion. For two Lightning Energy the Electroweb attack does 70 damage plus no retreating for the opponent's Pokemon. Trap a non-attacking Pokemon with this Galvantula and hit them multiple times on big Pokemon for a two turn Knockout.
Mew
Here is the single prize version of Mew. For one Psychic energy you deal 20 damage with Psy Report plus see the opponent's hand. It is a pretty good attack.
In a Psychic deck with Mew ex, Mewtwo ex and a Gardevoir engine I think one copy of this is fine in the deck. Two copies? Maybe.
New Versions Of Mankey & Primeape
This version of Mankey is one of those go big or go home attackers. For one Fighting Energy you hit for 50 damage if you flip heads or 0 damage if tails. The fifty damage can one hit knockout some other Basic Pokemon. It is the player's choice if they want to play this new Mankey or the Promo card Mankey.
This new version of Primeape is a beatstick attacker. For one Fighting Energy you do 50 damage. If you hit for weakness then this Primeape does 70 damage. The previous Primeape (see below) does more damage if it is damaged but the attack requires 2 Fighting Energy.
Druddigon
Druddigon is kind of interesting. The attack cost is a bit high to achieve but the ability is useful. One can use Druddigon as a wall that does 20 damage to any Pokemon that attacks Druddigon. Put Druddigon in the active spot while you set up Pokemon on the bench.
I think Druddigon would be used instead of Kangaskhan or Meowth in Dragonite decks.
Pidgeot ex
Here is Pidgeot ex. The picture of it looks somewhat weird. Pidgeot got some sort of weird haircut.
Pidgeot ex here has 170HP with one retreat cost and Lightning weakness. The attack of Scattering Cyclone does more damage depending on how Benched Pokemon your opponent has. The base damage is 80 and the attack does 20 more damage for each opponent Benched Pokemon. The maximum damage from Scattering Cyclone is 140 damage.
Mythical Slab
This item card is kind of weird and risky I think. When you play Mythical Slab take a look at the top card of your deck. If that top card is a Psychic Pokemon you can add that to your hand and thin out your deck. If it is not a Psychic Pokemon then that card goes to the bottom.
If Mythical Slab does not work well you risk putting something like Professor's Research to the bottom of your deck.
Pokemon Flute
This card is similar to Echoing Horn from the physical trading card game. You bring back a Pokemon from the opponent's discard pile into their Bench. This effect seems weird at it but you have to think of combinations with this card.
Some attacks do more damage if there are more Benched Pokemon on the opponent's side. Using Pokemon Flute can increase the damage of such attacks. If the opponent has no Benched Pokemon you can use Pokemon Flute with a Sabrina to switch the opponent's Active Pokemon with a weaker newly Benched Pokemon as an endgame strategy.
In certain decks, one copy of this card is good. I don't know about two copies.
Budding Expeditioner
This particular Supporter card is compatible with Mew ex only. You put the active Mew ex card from in play to your hand. If Mew ex in the active spot is in danger, play this card to put it back to your hand. A new Active Pokemon would be needed to be switched in from the bench.
Don't use this card in a non Mew deck. It would serve no purpose.
Immersive Card - Celebi ex
This Celebi ex card is quite nice. The background looks nice and elegant. There is a nice blend of the different shades of green. Very nice here.
Special Illustration Rare: Aerodactyl ex
This version of Aerodactyl ex looks like a fossil. It is not my style but I can see some people say this looks nice.
Special Illustration Rare: Mew ex
Here is Mew ex in the forest. The details look nice along with the different shades of green and grey.
Notes
Some of the promo cards look really cool. The Pikachu and Blastoise cards stand out for me. Imagine some of these cards in Pokemon TCG Pocket being printed physically. Many wallets will be drained from impulse buys.
There seems to be a bit more Pokemon with coin flip attacks. If it works your way then yay. If the coin flips are not in your favour then you hate the game or something.
More competitive decks will have the more rare cards like Celebi ex, Mew ex, Gyarados ex and Aerodactyl ex. It is tough to win when you don't have good cards. There are some notable single prize decks like Ninetales + Rapidash + Blaine, Primeape + Marshadow and maybe Arbok & new Weezing. Some testing needed though.
Even more detailed information can be found here at Pokebeach. They have deck missions information and themed collections.
I have seen that this card game has become quite famous in recent months, is it really as good as they say?
Pokemon TCG Pocket is popular as it is free to play. Impatient players are willing to pay more to get cards faster.
Is it good? It depends what you mean by good. The game can be tough at the start if you don't have good cards and/or are new to trading card games. Compared to the regular Pokemon trading card game, there is a bit more coin flipping for attacks and mechanics. If the flips work for you good, if not then people get angry at the game.
Wait a minute, is this game for cell phones? The cards catch my attention, they are beautiful.
Yup. It is a mobile game. You can play it on your smart phone. Free two packs every 24 hours.
