El juego fue lanzado en Windows mediante el programa de acceso anticipado de Steam en marzo de 2017, el juego vendió más de cuatro millones de copias en un período de tres meses.
El juego pone en escena a cien jugadores que saltan en paracaídas desde un avión a una isla, donde tienen la libertad de moverse hacia un lugar determinado que ellos mismo elijan y buscan armas y equipamiento para matar a otros jugadores mientras evitan ser asesinados. El área segura disponible del mundo del juego disminuye en tamaño durante la partida, dirigiendo a los jugadores sobrevivientes a áreas más reducidas y forzando enfrentamientos. El último jugador o equipo en pie gana la partida.
Este es un videojuego de acción en el cual 100 luchadores se enfrentan en un combate a muerte en el cual para ganar debes matar y ser el último con vida. Puedes jugar solo la partida o conformar un equipo con tres personas más, formando respectivamente un escuadrón de cuatro jugadores. La última persona o equipo con vida gana el juego.
El juego inicia cuando desde un avión los luchadores saltan en paracaídas a la isla, hacia lugares solicitados por los jugadores. La zona de juego es de aproximadamente 8 x 8 o 4 x 4 kilómetros de extensión los luchadores aterrizan con el uniforme o vestuario solicitado.
Los jugadores deben buscar las armas y diferente equipamiento distribuidos en el territorio usando el mapa en edificios y diferentes sitios o lugares, dichas armas se distribuyen por todo el mapa al comienzo del juego, incluyendo en zonas de alto riesgo con ciertas zonas de alto riesgo, ya con equipos ya ubicados para no morir en el intento, los jugadores permanecen ocultos para evitar ser asesinados por otros jugadores mientras continúan buscando más equipamiento. Las armas usadas por los combatientes tenemos Rifles de asalto, subfusiles, fusiles de tirador, ametralladoras, escopetas, granadas y armas especiales como ballestas y pistolas de bengalas.
Los jugadores caídos en combates son despojados de su equipamiento, Durante juego un avión vuela sobre varias partes del mapa deja caer un paquete o botín que contiene provisiones necesarias para sobrevivir en combate, momento de soltar el botín emite un humo rojo visible, llamando la atención de los combatientes para su ubicación.
Cada minuto que pasa, el área segura del mapa comienza a encogerse hacia un lugar, y el jugador que se quede fuera de esta área de seguridad recibe daños con el tiempo donde puede morir por tal motivo es clave permanecer seguro para ganar, esta área segura se simboliza con una pared azul brillante que se contrae con el tiempo, forzando a los jugadores a dirigirse hacia áreas más confinadas y así aumentan las posibilidades de encuentros con demás sobrevivientes.
Durante el transcurso de la partida, varios sitios de mapa del mapa están resaltados en rojo y son bombardeados, convirtiéndose en un peligro y amenaza para los que permanecen en esa zona. Mapa Erangel: El primer mapa del juego, con un área de aproximadamente 8x8 km, compuesto por pueblos y ciudades, La ciudad más importante de este mapa es Pochinki, la cual cuenta con provisiones para más de un escuadrón, por ser una zona con muchas provisiones, muchos aterrizan en esta zona, ocurriendo enfrentamientos en el mapa se visualiza depósitos que pueden tener chalecos y cascos.
Mapa Miramar: Es un mapa desértico, un poco más grande que Erangel, formado por grandes ciudades y montañas es riesgoso por no contar con vegetación y facilita a los enemigos tener objetivos fáciles para eliminar a sus contendientes, la ciudad más grande es Los Leones esta zona tiene vehículos y muchos edificios grandes que son eficaces para localizar enemigos, permite moverse en vehículos.
Mapa Sanhok: Es un mapa que describe una selva tropical, el terreno es más pequeño que Erangel y Miramar con una extensión 4x4 kilómetros, lugar de muchos enfrentamientos, y está formado por 3 islas unidas por puentes y pueblos, es más difícil localizar a los enemigos, la vegetación será la principal táctica utilizada para ganar y pasar desapercibido, hay puntos de interés, pero la cantidad y calidad de las provisiones en dichos sitios es muy alta.
Mapa Vikendi: Es un mapa que representa el invierno, siendo un mapa 6x6, está conformado por grandes islas unidas por puentes, posee más ciudades, pueblos y puntos de interés, el mapa está casi lleno de nieve menos por la parte sur del mapa, haciendo al jugador un blanco más fácil.
Karakin : Se presenta como el mapa más pequeño con una extensión de 2 x 2 kilómetros en una isla al norte de África, el mapa nos ofrece un escenario rocoso, donde la adrenalina de cada partida estará servida. Karakin introduce algunas mecánicas exclusivas únicas como la posibilidad de destruir muros y suelos mediante el uso de explosivos y disparos, que destruye totalmente algunos edificios al azar dentro de su radio de acción sirviendo para hacer más dinámica la partida.
Mapa Livik : Mapa exclusivo de la versión para celulares es de extensión tamaño que Karakin 2 x 2 km diseñado para combates más frecuentes y frenéticos, que combina elementos de los cuatro mapas clásicos y los integra en un ambiente que recuerda a las regiones nórdicas, junto a mecánicas nuevas como una cascada y unos baños termales, a diferencia de Karakin, el límite máximo de jugadores es de 52, lo que junto al tamaño reducido del mapa limita la duración de las partidas a aproximadamente 15 minutos. Posee dos armas exclusivas que no se encuentran en la versión original de PC: el subfusil P90 y el rifle de tirador designado Mk 12 SPR; y un vehículo exclusivo: el camión monstruo.
Mapa Varenga : Mapa exclusivo de la version Lite de PUBG MOBILE, siendo una adaptación 2 x 2 km del mapa de Erangel, teniendo una estética muy similar y conservando algunas de las ciudades de su versión completa, los lugares más importantes son Stadium, Pilot Plaza, SinkDelta y Thirdhill, este mapa está diseñado para combates más fuertes y frecuentes a diferencia de su versión completa Erangel, la cual tiene partidas más largas y más tácticas.
En los actuales momentos es unos de los juegos que están causando furor en este año 2020 tanto para el uso de Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Androide por sus escenas y ambientes combativos que mejoraron mucho el presente año haciéndolo mucho más atractivo comparado a su primera salida al aire en el año 2017.
