Taking A Look At Forestry.jpg

Forestry was not even one of those things I knew excised till I jumped into a world that was dedicated to it. As random events have a higher chance of happening with more people around. An interesting way to go about things.

I’ve been looking for an excuse to level up my woodcutting for a while. I was hoping there be some kind of mini-game or something for that. It turns out there are a few little mini-games that happen as random events. The only issue was I did not have a Forestry Kit and I was not playing on worlds that had loads of players all cutting the same trees.

Forestry Shop

forestry shop.jpg

A lot of things seem to all focus on having a Forestry Kit. This thing can even be worn on your back. Even better yet the many upgrades you can get you can craft into being stored in the Forestry Kit so you get the benefits of those items by just having the kit on you.

My first thought was that it was amazing. I hate having to search through my massive bank to find whatever items I need for a skill let alone something like this. They made things as easy as possible.

My long-term goal is to get things like the log basket. This allows me to carry extra logs with me. Making it take longer before I need to do a bank run.

There is also the Felling axe handle. That is worth almost 3 million gold at the time of writing this. You can attach it to quite a few different axes and you get a 10% woodcutting bonus. The catch however is you need forestry rations that get consumed as you are cutting wood.

This activity also gives you a way to earn clothing to gain a small woodcutting experience bonus. That clothing then can be upgraded to one with similar stats but is a cosmetic difference from the standard woodcutting clothing.

To be able to get any of these items out of the forestry shop I was going to need something called anima-infused bark. Those are earned when the mini-event spawns while cutting trees. So, it was time to jump into some woodcutting.

Woodcutting

farming willow trees.jpg

While I could cut higher trees than willows, I decided to use these as a test to learn more about forestry. It’s a good thing I did. I learned if you are more concerned about earning anima-infused bark than the amount of woodcutting experience you were getting per hour you want the highest populated area.

I’d later on move to a higher-level tree for a better experience. There I'd be earning sometimes half the amount of anima-infused bark since there were a considerable amount of fewer people there. This explains a lot why there are so many people with dragon axes chopping down willows.

This is also why it’s so important to be in a dedicated world to forestry. On the world I usually play on there might been one or two people at this spot farming willows. On World 444 there was an insane amount of people. I was also at the spot near Draynor Village.

You also even get a small bonus for your woodcutting the more people who are chopping the same tree. Since trees are now timer-based with how long they take to despawn. I did not mind so many players all chopping the same tree down at once.

leaves.jpg

With the forestry kit outside of any events that spawned from time to time, I was getting leaves. Each tree has its kind and they can be accessed by opening up the Forestry Kit which is required to have with you to collect the leaves.

These leaves are what is used along with different kinds of cooked fish to make Forestry rations. It was nice to know even when I was not getting anima-infused bark that I'd be saving for big ticket items or non-trade items. That I could still be making some extra money on the side.

forestry campfire.jpg

For those feeling lazy next to places that have the NPC that sells Forestry Kit, you can also find a Forestry campfire. Where you can burn logs for fire fire-making experience. It’s quite a lower amount than just making your fires. It is however a nice AFK way to earn some fire-making experience if you are feeling lazy.

I was working on my fletching skills. So, I was using my logs collected for that instead of just getting small amounts of fire-making experience. There was also a bank just a couple of steps away which I did bank a portion of what I was farming as well. Not that willow logs sell for much. I just wanted some for myself in case I wanted to do skilling later on or needed them for a quest or something else.

Forestry Events

spot the odd one out.jpg

Every once in a while, you can get events. This was perhaps the only reason I did not turn on any options to hide the massive amount of people around me. Even if I was not paying much attention. You noticed when everyone started to swarm towards an event.

To be able to get the most out of these events you had to have cut down at least two trees in the local area before the event was up. Otherwise, it tells you that you don’t qualify and the rewards are junk. I learned this the hard way when I noticed a couple of tiles away people farming different trees got an event and I was getting rather reduced rewards from it.

This kind of requirement however makes sense. This keeps people from just world hopping looking for any events up only. Instead, this makes you have to cut some trees down. That is the whole point anyway.

The first random event I ended up getting was the odd one out. This one was quite simple to work out. A bunch of spots spawn on the ground and you need to stand on the one that is not matching any others. I was getting 21 anima-infused bark. After a couple of these spots were up the event ended. For my efforts, I was rewarded an extra 53 anima-infused bark. Not bad for not even knowing this was a thing. Later on, I'd be doing a lot better.

rainbow event.jpg

It then was a short while before the next event started. This one had a leprechaun and a rainbow that spawned. Not only did standing in the rainbow give me a massive woodcutting experience boost. For every log I got while I was being affected by it, I got an extra 22 anima-infused bark.

This was also another reason why people were farming lower-tier trees. When this event popped up they had quite a high success rate of getting a log.

You can also use the NPC that spawns to bank logs. Which I felt was a nice little touch.

Sometimes I'd get another event just moments after I already had one. Other times it felt like I was waiting half an hour or longer. It seems to be quite random other than I noticed during higher player times the events were quite more frequent.

struggling sappling.jpg

After some repeats, I ended up getting the hardest event I have seen out of all of them. There is this struggling sapling that spawns. You need to feed mulch. That mulch is made from green leaves, rotting leaves, mushrooms, and droppings.

The catch here is you need to make the mulch in the correct order to get the most anima-infused bark out of each time you do it. This requires a bit of trial and error that is unless you are lazy and just wait for other players to work that out and announce it in chat. I always have player chat off so no cheating for me on this one!

I ended up getting this event the most out of all of them. I’m not a big fan of it as I tend to grind woodcutting late at night when I'm far too tired to want to think about anything. So I usually only get a small amount of anima-infused bark from this one.

pheasant.jpg

Another event is where these pheasants spawn in. You need to steal eggs from nests that don’t have a pheasant on them. If there is one then you get stunned for a short amount of time. These can be a bit hard to see with all the players around. Usually, however, you can just follow the massive crowd to where they are running.

flower bush.jpg

After a while, I ended up noticing quite a few flower bushes spawning on the ground, and thus another event. This one you can get rather lucky or unlucky on. You need to cross-pollinate flowers. You need to find the matching pair and go back and forth between them till a new set spawns and you have to find the next pair and repeat that action.

Sometimes I'll get really lucky and the two flowers I need to go between are right next to each other. Other times they are the furthest ones away. Sometimes you luck out and other times not so much.

While the amount of anima-infused bark I was not getting was a lot for each match. Once this event had ended, I got a nice 109 anima-infused bark bonus for all the ones I did. Not the most rewarding event that I've seen out of all of them. It however was not the worst either.

poacher fox trap.jpg

Quite an easy event has a fox poacher showing up. He starts dropping traps one at a time and you just run up to them and disarm them. As the event moves along the poacher tends to move further and further away from the spot you are farming at. This event is easy to miss if you do not notice the first couple of traps.

It’s events like this one that I prefer to have people showing instead of hiding them. I don’t know how many times I'm only half paying attention. Then I see a few dozen people running off in one direction and I know an event must have spawned somewhere.

yew log farming.jpg

After a while, I ended up moving to a yew log location up near Seer’s Village and it was night and day from how many events were spawning or rather the lack of many. There were a lot fewer players at the time of day I was up there looking to farm some yew logs. I ended up earning about half as much anima-infused bark per hour then I was getting down in Draynor.

I would have thought a higher-level tree would have a higher-level anima-infused bark reward from the events. From the best I could tell they were similar or even less. When I got leprechaun rainbow since I was farming a higher tier tree where I had a lower chance of getting a log, I was earning less overall anima-infused bark.

Final Thoughts

level 65.jpg

I rather found it fun to all the different kinds of events while leveling up woodcutting from Forestry. It helped break up the grind by switching up the gameplay quite a bit. It also gives me quite a few rewards to want to work towards earning.

I then ended up gathering around 6k anima-infused bark for the time I spent. Along with getting about a dozen woodcutting levels. While I'll be needing quite a lot more anima-infused bark for the rewards I want. It was at least a decent start. For the moment I'm saving up for a Felling axe handle that costs 10k anima-infused bark.
