It was time to start exploring some dungeons. I was also not expecting the winter season to cause me such struggles and setbacks. This game sure loves to toss you a few curved balls when it can.
I wanted to head out to the beach to collect some fish and see what kind of trouble I could get myself into. There is a cave network that connects the town to the beach. I also could not turn down going into a cave.
The only downside of this connection was the drop-off towards the exit. This prevents you from going back. I’d have to take the long way back above ground to get back to the town.
The cave itself had a couple of creatures I had to clear out. I was now at the point that not everything was killing me. I still had so much to learn but after all the times I've found myself getting killed. I was at least learning from some mistakes.
The hardest part was not having a house to store items in. I went on a beach run and it was tempting to loot everything I could get my hands on. From the blue sand to the seaweed. I however don’t have anywhere to store that stuff that would have come quite in handy.
Instead, anything I did not feel like looting just to sell. I had to skip over. I did at least collect quite a few fish that I ended up cooking up. This again having a house would been nice since it had a kitchen to cook in. Instead, I had to make a campfire and buy a pot to cook foods that required more than just one ingredient.
I also started to realize another issue I was going to run into. Money itself has weight. At the time I only had quite a basic satchel. Between that and my normal inventory carrying space, I could bring 35 pounds of stuff before I'd get a movement penalty to the point, I could not move any further.
At one point I started to poke around inside of some of the local landmarks. For the most part, they were caves to forts that had bandits in them. More times than not I'd kill a couple of things then have to run away and use a bedroll to recover my health from the combat.
This was quite a slow process. I did end up looting some needed items to make myself my first crafted weapon. It was a fang sword and it ended up helping out a lot in combat. It used a lot more stamina than any weapons I had before it. The damage output was more than worth it.
One thing I was not expecting was for the season to change to winter in this region. That ended up presenting all kinds of issues. My character would not only be at risk of getting killed by the cold for staying out too long. He would also get sick and require some time to recover from that as well.
While it was tempting to move to another region and hope it was not a winter wonderland there. I decided it was time to tackle some local dungeons and caves. One place I decided to push hard on was called Blister Burrow.
I got to give it to this game without having a source of light this place was a challenge to see around. There were at least a few things that gave out different degrees of lighting. So, there was at least some ability to see.
It was also a bit scary going into rooms I could not see into. I had no idea if I was walking into an ambush or not. Next time I enter a place like this I make sure I have a proper light source like a lantern. I even know where some areas are. I just did not have one on me to save some carrying weight.
I ended up discovering a part of the cave had a locked gate. To get into that gate I needed to use a small sapphire. The only way I was going to get one of those was from mining. I did not have any luck on this run of the cave from the iron nodes of getting any.
I also ended up having to make a couple of trips from the cave back to town to sell. The loot in here was not worth much and also had some decent weight to it. I however needed any funds I could get to get some better gear. I was also trying to save up to buy my house back.
At the very least while inside of the cave I found a strange shield that I ended up turning in for 70 silvers. I ended up making a couple hundred silver from that cave. It’s a shame I was not able to clear it sooner back when I needed to pay off the tax on my house.
I then attempted to take on a fort. Between the snow causing issues with it getting too cold to stay outdoors for long amounts of time. Along with the bandits inside the fort. I ended up getting killed a couple of times.
This was yet another location when you got killed all your stuff got taken away and stored in some chests. Thankfully I ended up discovering where those chests were. I ended up having to make some rather daring runs to get back my stuff after getting defeated a couple of times.
The loot inside that fort was at least so much better than anything else I had looted. When I could afford to do so I spent nights at the inn in town recovering from my adventures. It was money I should have been saving to get my house back. With the winter, however, it was just too hard to try and stay alive.
At least anytime I made it back into the town it was warmer there. Getting through winter ended up being quite a huge struggle. Between trying to stay warm I was just struggling to keep up with food and water.
I ended up doing a couple more fishing trips down at the beach. While there are some creatures I could hunt for meat as well. Those would tend to run away when they were near death. Resulting in me returning from several hunting trips with only fish to show for my efforts.
Final Thoughts
Needless to say, I could not wait for spring to come around. I ended up setting a tent up right outside of town. There were a few days I'd just gather up food. Then rest in the tent to make time pass by. I would even have a campfire going hoping to not freeze to death.
On one of my little trips for food. I ended up getting killed and losing my fang sword. I did not recover it in time so I ended up having to buy a mace out of a shop. It was a bit of a downgrade. It was at least better than any of the weapons I was looting from anyone.
