Outward Definitive Edition | Winter Was Coming

Winter was coming.jpg

I knew winter was coming soon and there were some dungeons I wanted to run first. The plan was to try and get out of the region at the first sight of snow. As expected, plans don’t always work out like you want in this game.

One dungeon I never got around to last time was Ghost Pass. I was trying to get to a trainer in the region for some skills. I however noticed the only way there was through a dungeon called Ghost Pass.

This place was filled with ghosts, horrors, and an enforcer. The horrors end up giving you corruption which once you have too much of it starts to spawn at random ghosts that attack you. While there is a cure for corruption it takes a few doses and it’s not exactly cheap to buy in town.

There were quite a few twisting paths, dead ends, and locked gates. Since there are no in-game maps of dungeons this one took a little while to work out how to get through. At least there were a few things to gather inside.

It more or less felt like I went underground and then popped up on the other side of a gate that sits in the middle between the entry and exit of the place. There was an elevator I had to ride to get to the back portion of the dungeon.

This was one of those dungeons I was not able to clear my first time around. I ended up heading back to town to sell off some loot. Restock on supplies and finish clearing them. By the time I did it was now winter time.

I ended up checking out one other dungeon that was behind the pass. As I expected it seemed to be connected with a gate that is near the fort and therefore would make it quite easy to get to this area in a timely matter.

I decided to not press on with such matters for the time being. The NPC that offered to open the gate for me would only do so after I collected the remaining bones scattered in that dungeon. I was speaking with a skull.

He also kept going on how the gates were sealed to keep the evil spirits inside that dungeon. While I have no idea if unlocking the gate would release a bunch of evil spirits into the region. Knowing this game, I was not willing to take my chances.

Instead, I left that dungeon and headed east toward a hermit's house. Inside was a trainer. He sold a passive skill that increased my weather defense by eight for only one hundred silvers. While that is not a lot, I felt it would have at least some kinds of impact when dealing with hot or cold regions. Everything else that trainer has I did not care much for.

My goal had been to get out of this region by winter time had arrived. I however had one last task I wanted to do before doing so. I ended up heading back over to the fort and taking out the leader there.

At first, I was not sure I'd be able to kill him. He was fighting me next to the platform edge. Then to my shock, he ended up falling off. He needed up trapped behind a pile of wood. I was able to just barely hit him and avoid his attacks.

Once he was dead, I was unable to loot the corpse. So, I had to climb up to the platform I was fighting him on. Then I dropped down and became stuck like him. At least I got the loot. I then had to wait for winter's cold embrace to finish me off.

the final chest.jpg

I woke to my gear being stored in a chest in the fort. Thankfully I already had the entire thing cleared out. So, it was quite easy to recover my stuff. I then used the key I acquired and looted the final chest in the fort.

I then decided it was time to get out of the cold weather. I’d come back in a couple of days in hopes the snow had melted. So, I headed over to the forest. While I had not moved forward on the main quest line, I still had some side quests I could run and do in the forest region.

A region like this starts to become fun once I have learned my way around. No more being lost any time I got taken out. Which to my surprise was not that often. Not till I started running one of the harder dungeons in the forest region. That would however be for another day.

I ended up going into town to do a quick delivery quest turns in. I also went and acquired a backpack that ends up keeping for the rest of my playthrough. It provides reduced stamina usage and can carry 85 weights. While there are higher-weight backpacks out there, they tend to reduce your speed or provide some other bonus I don’t care much for.

Getting the backpack with the three horns on the back of it would have made my trip into the forest region alone well worth it. This was going to make a lot of lower-level dungeon farming runs go so much quicker. I can now clear and loot just about everything in one go. Instead of having to take multiple trips back and forth.

The rest of the dungeons in the forest I decided to leave alone for now. Quite a few of them I have never been in. Others I knew were going to be a challenge until I got myself a better weapon and hopefully by then some needed skills.

Outside of picking up some nice passive skills up till this point. The only other skill that was useable by me was a kick skill. More times than not I found it not worth my time using either. It was a skill you started with. I however rather just get another slash in with my main weapon than kicking something for a low amount of damage hoping it knocks them down to the ground. More times than not the kick misses or is rather ineffective.

Final Thoughts

inside the town.jpg

Before heading back to see if winter had passed yet. I made one final trip into the town. I wanted to check and see if there was an option to get a player house in the forest yet. I was not shocked when the agent that sold the house was not around. I just need to progress the main storyline to get that NPC to show up.

While I'd be advancing the storyline shortly. I was not going to be taking any risks this time around. I had worked out my first character it was possible to do things ahead of time. Then when a timed quest comes around I had very little to worry about if I got any possible hard parts out of the way that you could do beforehand.

I spent one final night in the forest city. Then I crafted up some travel rations and headed out the east gate so I could follow the lake shoreline and road north back to my home region. Thankfully by the time I got there, it was now spring again.
