Retro Review - The Pagemaster (Mega Drive)

The next reviews will be about videogames based on movies, because in the past there were a lot of this kind of things, videogame adaptations of movies, many times these videogames even came out before the premiere of the movie, although they usually came out after the premiere and they were used to advertise even more the movie in particular. Most of these games without being something spectacular, if they get to be really entertaining and well made products. One of those video games is one called "The Pagemaster", a very interesting movie that I have many years without seeing again and is about a boy who is involved in an adventure like no other when he enters into the stories of several very famous books of literature. And how could it be otherwise, the video game of The Pagemaster is one of the platform genre that despite its simplicity, becomes very entertaining.

So, today's Retro Review is about: The Pagemaster (Mega Drive).

The video game is partially based on the movie, omitting details to make the progression in the video game adequate, but in general terms it is exactly the same plot of the movie, where the protagonist who is played by Macaulay Culkin, an actor who was very famous many years ago especially for being the protagonist of "Home Alone". Macaulay Culkin enters a world of fantasy and full of magic represented by various literary genres such as adventure, fantasy and horror. Graphically it is a pretty nice game, The Pagemaster also has a version for SNES and although graphically it looks good, I consider that the Mega Drive version (the version of this review) is the one that looks better on screen, has better colors and one more marked details. As in the movie, The Pagemaster has a great coloring and manages to reflect very well each scenario according to the literary genre in which we find ourselves, that is, when we are in the world of "Horror" all the scenery and elements on screen will be related to that theme, so dark colors and decorative elements that allude to the theme of horror will predominate.

The same happens with all the other literary worlds, where each one manages to represent very well each genre and especially what was seen in the movie. The sprite of our protagonist is an excellent adaptation of his animated counterpart from the movie, managing to be quite recognizable, plus it moves fluidly on screen, which is very important for a game of the platform genre. The scenarios, as I mentioned earlier, are very well recreated, have enemies according to the scenario in which we find ourselves and there is an adequate variety of them. The music is quite good, very varied and composed in such a way that each melody fits very well to the main theme of the scenarios in which we find ourselves. The melodies allude to adventure, terror and magic, being faithful representations of each book in which we will live our adventures. Without detracting from the other sections of this video game, I consider that the sound section is what stands out the most in this game, since in addition to sounding pretty good, these melodies manage to set an excellent atmosphere in each scenario in which we find ourselves. The sound effects are also varied and are heard well, being this also an element that achieves immersion in this fantasy world.

The Pagemaster (Mega Drive) is a platform game like any other, it does not really innovate in terms of mechanics or game modes, but due to its simplicity of control and easy learning, makes it a very entertaining and fun game, being an excellent adaptation of one of my childhood movies. As I mentioned before and as in the movie, the scenarios are divided by literary genres, being Horror, Fantasy and Adventure, having each of them, as well as a different visual theme in terms of scenery and enemies, but in terms of gameplay they are exactly the same, only varying the types of platforming and level design, logically. Our protagonist can perform all the typical actions of games of this style, such as jumping, running, but he can also use magics that we will obtain as we advance through the scenarios. Also, depending on where we are, our protagonist can use a sword as his main weapon. In addition to having the classic collection items that will give us extra lives and others. It really is an entertaining game that brings more elements than I have written in this post, so it is worth playing it.

De videojuegos basados en película irán las próximas reviews y es que antes se hacía mucho este tipo de cosas, adaptaciones a videojuegos de películas, muchas veces estos videojuegos incluso salían antes del estreno de la película, aunque normalmente salían después del estreno y estos servían para publicitar aún más la película en concreto. La mayoría de estos juegos sin ser algo espectacular, si llegan a ser productos realmente entretenidos y bien hechos. Uno de esos videojuegos es uno llamado “The Pagemaster”, una película bastante interesante y que tengo muchísimos años sin volver a ver y trata sobre un niño que se ve envuelto en una aventura sin igual al adentrarse en las historias de varios libros muy famosos de la literatura. Y como no podría ser otra cosa, el videojuego de The Pagemaster es uno del género de plataformas que pese a su simpleza, llega a ser muy entretenido.

Por lo que, la Retro Review de hoy es sobre: The Pagemaster (Mega Drive).

El videojuego se basa parcialmente en la película, omitiendo detalles para hacer adecuada la progresión en el videojuego, pero en términos generales es exactamente el mismo argumento de la película, donde el protagonista el cual es interpretado por Macaulay Culkin, un actor que fue muy famoso hace muchos años especialmente por ser el protagonista de “Home Alone”. Macaulay Culkin se adentra en un mundo de fantasía y lleno de magia representado por diversos géneros literarios como la aventura, fantasía y horror. Gráficamente es un juego bastante bonito, The Pagemaster cuenta también con una version para SNES y aunque gráficamente se ve bien, considero que la version de Mega Drive (la version de esta review) es la que mejor se ve en pantalla, cuenta con mejores colores y uno detalles más marcados. Así como en la película, The Pagemaster cuenta con un gran colorido y logra reflejar muy bien cada escenario según el género literario en el que nos encontremos, es decir, cuando nos encontremos en el mundo de “Horror” todo el decorado y elementos en pantalla tendrán relación con esa temática, por lo que van a predominar los colores oscuros y elementos decorativos que hagan alusión a la temática de horror.

De igual forma pasa con todos los demás mundos literarios, donde cada uno logra representar muy bien cada género y especialmente lo visto en la película. El sprite de nuestro protagonista es una excelente adaptación de su contraparte animada de la película, logrando ser bastante reconocible, además de que se mueve con fluidez en pantalla, lo cual es muy importante para un juego del género de plataformas. Los escenarios, como ya mencioné anteriormente, están muy bien recreados, cuentan con enemigos acordes al escenario en el que nos encontremos y hay una variedad de ellos adecuada. La música es bastante buena, muy variada y compuesta de tal manera que cada melodía se ajusta muy bien a la temática principal de los escenarios en el que nos encontremos. Las melodías aluden a la aventura, al terror y a la magia, siendo fieles representaciones de cada libro en el que viviremos nuestras aventuras. Sin desmeritar los demás apartados de este videojuego, considero que el apartado sonoro es lo que más destaca en este juego, ya que además de sonar bastante bien, estas melodías logran ambientar de manera excelente cada escenario en el que nos encontremos. Los efectos sonoros de igual manera son variados y se escuchan bien, siendo este además, un elemento que logra la inmersión en este mundo de fantasía.

The Pagemaster (Mega Drive) es un juego de plataformas como cualquier otro, realmente no llega innovar en términos de mecánicas o modos de juegos, pero debido a su sencillez de control y fácil aprendizaje, lo hace un videojuego bastante entretenido y divertido, siendo una excelente adaptación de una de mis películas de la infancia. Como mencioné anteriormente y al igual que en la película, los escenarios se ven divididos por géneros literarios, siendo estos el Horror, la Fantasía y la Aventura, teniendo cada uno de ellos, además de una temática visual diferente tanto en términos de escenario como en enemigos, pero en términos de jugabilidad son exactamente lo mismo, tan solo variando los tipos de plataformeo y diseño de niveles, lógicamente. Nuestro protagonista puede realizar todas las acciones típicas de los juegos de este estilo, como saltar, correr, pero además puede también usar magias que iremos obteniendo a medida que avanzamos en los escenarios. También dependiendo donde nos encontremos, nuestro protagonista podrá usar una espada como arma principal. Además de contar con los clásicos ítems de recolección que nos otorgaran vidas extras y demás. Realmente es un juego entretenido y que aporta más elementos de los que he escrito en este post, por lo que vale la pena jugarlo.
