Last week I came across a post by @caspermoeller89 about Crypto Shots that caught my attention.
Crypto Shots (https://crypto-shots.com/) is a 3D first-person shooter game that you can play in your web browser. It is available on the Hive and WAX blockchain. In the game, you fight against bots or other players in both single-player (PvE) or multiplayer (PvP) modes.
The trigger (pun intended)
I had noticed Crypto Shots before on the blockchain. In fact they started already back in 2021. I remember I was enthousiastic about the idea of a 3D shooter. It was quite refreshing since most of the games on Hive were 'card-based' ones back than.
I have become a bit hesitant with investing in new, interesting projects, so I decided to wait a bit longer to see how the game would develop. And that is actually when it stopped for me.
I've seen a couple of posts here and there over the years, but there was never a reall buzz about this game. At least, not among the people and communities I follow on Hive.
Reading that this game is still being played after a couple of years triggered me to check it out.
But the post from @caspermoeller89 made me aware that there were still people playing this game.
My first impressions
Logging in with the Hive Keychain was quite simple. In the opening screen you can choose sinle or multiplayer. For single multiplayer you need a starter pack, for multiplayer you need a PvP Alpha Pass. I later learned that you can also play without them in some cases, but if you want to play everything, you need those.
I'm really thankful with the help of the community on their Discord since they advised me to connect my Wax wallet as well since the NFT's are much cheaper than on the Hive chain (the game is multi-chain ;)).
The Starter Pack was 69 SWAP.HIVE, which was about 24/25 USD, but I got it from Wax for $1.33.
Well that's a bargain! When heading to the site https://crypto-shots.com/ you are presented with a screenshot of the game. It remembered me a bit of the 3D shooters I've played in the past (and I have played a lot of them). I think it comes closest to Half-Life when you look at the images. It's not photo-realistic like some 3D shooters nowadays, but it looks quite good.
Hive | Wax |
---|---|
Same goes for the PvP Alha Pass which cost me $1.20
You can buy quite a bit more NFT's, but with these you can start well.
There was also a bug which caused that I didn't see my inventory. This was because I only had Wax NFT's (if I'm correct). I was advised to buy at least one Hive NFT and this fixed it.
Be sure to check out the Wax NFT market:
https://wax.atomichub.io/market?blockchain=wax-mainnet&collection_name=crypto4shots&order=asc&primary_chain=wax-mainnet&sort=price&symbol=WAX#sales
Be aware that it takes a 12 hour cooldown for the Wax NFT's to be used in the game. This is a safety measure.
Playing the game
I've played a couple of games PvE and even joined an organised PvP tournament last weekend.
In the PvE you have to clear a level from flying drones. The graphics are quite nice and despite the game runs in a browser it's running pretty smooth. I did have to adjust my mouse sensitivity, but after doing that it worked pretty fine.
The game is play-to-earn, but the $boom (Wax) and Doom (Hive) tokens aren't worth that much, so don't expect to get rich soon.
You can clear multiple levels, but for that I really need some more ammo/guns, which were still in cooldown for now.
As I said I also played a PvE tournament last Sunday. They run a tournament every day at 4PM CEST and during the weekends at 8PM CEST. In Multiplayer mode you play a couple of matches of 5 minutes in different teams.
As I had expected I was slaughtered 😂 You can see some people have been playing this game for quite a while. Despite being a noob, my experience with 3D shooters helped me to at least have a couple of kills. I think I do need to practice some more.
If you want to have a view of the game itself; here is a youtube video of a multiplayer game:
Overall conclusions
I must admit it was a bit of a hurdle to get myself going. Buying NFT's on several markets was a bit challenging. And I already had a Wax wallet. But the guys on their Discord were very helpful.
The game is nice and entertaining. I don't know if I will play the PvE a lot, but I will certainly join the multiplayer matches.
And the nice thing is that you can also set up a multiplayer game yourself. This way you can test the controls a bit without being slaughtered all the time.
Yes, the game has some bugs here and there, the start was a bit difficult, but now I'm in I'll certainly going to hang around some more.

This is a great review! Glad your interest was ignited by that snap post I did (turned out pretty well I think). You need to stop killing me in game though 😂
Will be looking forward to seeing there more 💯

Did you ask about the disparity in prices between the Hive and Wax chains?
The game originally started on wax and later moved to hive. The game is now mainly focused on Hive and rewards handed out are Hive rewards for tournament's . You can earn using other chains also including wax, ethereum and bitcoin but our community at the moment is mainly hive users. Hence the market is a little higher on Hive.
The Wax market has been kind of forgotten about and as a result has lower prices where as the Hive market gets used more by the player base
Thank you for the expanded answer.
No, I didn't.

Nice post. It is great to have another member in our community. I hope to see you in the Saturday tournament this weekend. I live stream it on Mazer Gaming’s Twitch channel every Sunday.
As you seem to already be aware we have daily tournaments and lots of hive rewards up for grabs.
Thanks for trying out the game. Have a great day!
This Saturday I have other plans, but I may join on Sunday again.
Do you know where I can find the stream of last Sunday?
I might see myself getting killed a few times 😂Thanks @mickvir
All good
