9999 in 1 - The rare cartridges of yesteryear

in Hive Gaming3 years ago (edited)

Currently, the world of video games is in a virtual universe, 80% of the games are purchased through online platforms, this makes acquiring a title very simple, however, over time has been left aside the fact of feeling with the touch of the hands the physical game and to observe some additional content that the developer wants to show the consumer (something very similar to the collector's editions of today).

In the old days, it was mandatory to go to video clubs or specialized video game stores to buy a game, the only way to know how a game was before buying it was by recommendation of a friend or by reading a magazine, but there was the case in which you threw yourself into the adventure to see what you got, this is when more than one person came across some cartridges that caught the attention, the 9999 in 1.

These cartridges were a double-edged sword, since they could bring you quite attractive games, as well as titles that had nothing to do with the images that appeared on the screen, however there was something that was really surprising and that was their price. An original cartridge could cost between 40 to 60 dollars and that mysterious 9999 in 1 could cost 10 to 20 dollars, that is why many people without thinking about it bought 2 or 4 of these games.

Many were able to experience true relics that were hidden in these games, becoming the video games of their childhood, although several of these cartridges had a kind of deception to the consumer, as they really did not contain 9999 games, they were a compilation of 20 - 50 games, but with a modification, either more life, other levels, among other options, this is something that disappointed many players of those times.

Other companies did devote due attention and created cartridges where no game was repeated, with quite elaborate menus and a number of quite attractive games, these cartridges were called 100 in 1 or 110 in 1, which, if they had a credible amount of titles, however, due to the excellent and good they were very scarce, so much so that today they are highly prized in the collectors market, costing up to 300 dollars.

The console that most received this type of games was the Nintendo Entertainment System or Famicom, as well as its other pirated versions (NASA, PolyStation, among others) being these two original consoles the most pirated in those years, although this was not all bad, since it was possible to enjoy games with quite strange and good hacks, for example, the many Mario games that existed.

In my case I played thanks to one of these cartridges a supposed "Mario 8" which was very different from the other plumber games I was used to play, however, the game was very addictive and had very good gameplay. Over the years I discovered that this hack was a modification of the video game Don Doko Don 2, thus becoming one of my favorite games of all my life.

This surely happened to many gamers in the world, a simple cartridge of 9999 in 1 gave you to know a video game that would become a legend in your gamer life, if this happened to you I would like you to tell me in the comments section which game you knew thanks to these strange cartridges.

GRAND DAD?!?

I remember when I had my first 99999 in 1 cassette, I said I was done and that I didn't have to buy more video games, but it wasn't like that, many of the ones I had were repeated, but the only thing different were the levels and the appearance of some characters.

You are not the only one that this happened to you, many of us look at those cartridges and think that we don't have to buy any more but when we see the menu we realize that it was all a lie.

Dude that picture of the Japanese Street fighter cartrige got me downloading it right now hahaha - I followed you!

Sometimes you see an image or a cartridge of a game and you feel like you want to play it again, it happens to me a lot with Double Dragon.
