Things you didn't know about Super Mario Bros. 3

in Hive Gaming3 years ago (edited)

In the Famicom or Nintendo Entertainment System we can find a huge amount of games with an excellent quality, both in its gameplay and also in its graphics, among them we can see one that stood out from the time of its launch and for many is one of the most amazing video games that could be played on that fabulous console, Super Mario Bros. 3.

From the beginning of the development of this video game, it became a complete challenge for the 11 developers behind such an ambitious project, as they wanted to create the longest game in terms of the number of levels in cartridge format, so it took them more than 2 years to create and release it for the Famicom and NES, impacting all gamers of that time.

The first thing that can be detailed is that they did not use any sprite of its predecessor, that is to say everything that is in this video game is completely new, unlike Super Mario Bros. 2 that had a huge amount of recycled sprites, this made it visually something completely new, in addition to attracting the attention of all players by the excellent thing that was seen in the graphic section.

Since it was released there was a myth of Super Mario Bros 3 where it was said that all the events that happened were a play, that is, that the princess was not really captured and that the inseparable brothers were not under any danger, this began to speculate because several things in the game gave several clues to believe in this, such as the curtain that rose just at the beginning of the game, the shadows of some things on the wall, different platforms that were hung with ropes and many more things.

This was officially confirmed by Shigeru Miyamoto, who indicated on Mario's 30th anniversary that it really was a play, and in the re-releases of the game at the end they added certain things that determine a play, such as the lighting with spotlights on the princess and Mario on a stage that ends when the curtain comes down.

One of the things that lasted in the future generations of plumber games was the incorporation of 7 antagonists, not only Bowser but 7 Koopas which were originally presented as his children, these in the original Japanese version did not have any name, but in the western edition they did, the person in charge of helping to improve the translation of the game thought it was interesting to give names to each of them.

Dayvv Brooks was in charge of improving the translation from Japanese to English of Super Mario Bros. 3, being a music lover he was inspired by different names of famous rock artists to give a name to the famous 7 sons of Bowser, such as Lemmy comes from the name Lemmy Kilmister, one of the members of the band Motorhead, or we can also name Wendy, name inspired by the singer of the band The Plasmatics Wendy O. Williams.

One of the things that the developers wanted to include in this game was the possibility that Mario could ride a small dinosaur, something that was actually impossible due to the technical limitations that the Famicom or NES, however, this idea was not discarded for its sequel, as it was the debut of one of the most iconic Nintendo characters, Yoshi.

Super Mario Bros. 3 was undoubtedly a game that marked a new beginning for the famous plumber, from that point certain mechanics, characters and many more things began to be seen in future games of the franchise, such as transformations, flying, the Koopa family, among many other things, this makes it one of the most relevant games in the history of Nintendo, a jewel that every player should play and have present in their history or library of games.

Game developers in the early days really had to come up with fascinating workarounds to get their entire game to fit inside the game cartridges. Game development probably wasn't even that lucrative back then, so the passion of the game developers really shone. SMB3 is definitely one of the games that showed the passion of the game devs, thanks for sharing!

lol, I had no idea about this, I always thought those shadows and the curtain were unimportant elements of the game. And it's the same for me with the Koopas, I didn't know they were meant to be Bowser's children. I guess when they discarded that idea they decided to introduce bowser Jr. as his son.
