More SoulKeeping Adventures

in Hive Gaming6 months ago

It's been a few days since I first talked about playing SoulKeep, right after it was launched.

At the time I only played the solo missions of League 1 and hadn't tried tournaments.

In the meantime, I caught up with some reading to not play so blindly. I also had my first few attempts at yesterday's tournament from League 1. What I liked was that tournament entries were very cheap (but the cost doubled at every new attempt) so I had no issue buying more entries.

Unfortunately, it looks like I need to improve my gameplay or my collection, or I don't rank high enough to receive any SPS rewards.

Since I wasn't competitive in the L1 tourneys (well, at least the one I played), it's probably a mistake that I unlocked League 2 on the solo missions. That automatically forces me into L2 touneys, which have higher potential rewards, but also stronger waves and fiends, and that's not great if you are a noob to tower defense games and your cards aren't great either with only 20 packs purchased in the presale.

Tournament entries are much more expensive too. From 2 DEC per first replay in League 1 to 20 DEC in League 2, that's a big jump. Third attempt in L2 is 160 DEC already. I read in discord about someone who made 11 attempts, and he calculated the last one cost him around 15 USD.

Maybe the good thing is that someone else went to L3, and the cost for the initial replay there after the free attempt is 11 tournament entries (or 22 DEC), which is only slightly higher than in L2.

Anyway, after 3 attempts I am far away from earning any SPS on the leaderboard of today's L2 tournament. I'll stop here because it doesn't seem like my performance is improving from one attempt to the next, despite upgrading a few towers and spells compared to the beginning of the day.

By checking out a few videos and the discussions on discord I realized there are players way better than me at this game, and chances are I'll never earn any rewards on the leaderboard without significant investments and/or learning more about it. It doesn't help that I don't have a hero, but there are only a few hundred of them in total and the prices of the ones in the market are prohibitive.

I like the game but I don't see any reason to FOMO in, so I'll take it slow and see what happens.

How many packs have you needed so far? I managed to unlock L2, and I was only required to open 4 packs till now.

I opened them all, but have used maybe 20% of of the towers and spells I pulled. Anyway, I still need to learn various tricks about TD games, I've seen a video of bulldog's, who finishes up there on the leaderboard every time, and he seems to almost play another game than I did before seeing his video.

Another one that requires further investment before you actually profit. I'm sorry your efforts are not translating into rewards, how much are we roughly looking at before you start earning SPS?

I'm not sure yet. I might be on to something, but I don't want to push it further now because it's late and I can't focus.

What strategies are you finding most effective? I'm hitting a wall at the 4th level, not sure if it's due to lack of cards or I'm just playing poorly.

In League 1 or League 2? You can advance to League 2 without any cards of your own, just with Level 0 cards you are offered by default (you can't play tournaments with them).

I don't remember the specific map that gives you trouble, but the good thing is the solo missions you can replay for free until you get them "right".

It sounds like a good game, but it does sound like there is a pretty steep curve. Do you think the rewards justify the costs for extra tournament entries? It looks like the cost gets more expensive fast.

If you earn the minimum SPS rewards on EVERY tournament, 4 attempt are the max you can make (1 free + 3 paid) before you are on the losing side. If you don't win rewards every time you participate, it's likelier you are on the losing side or... still learning/growing.

I wish to start playing this game. Do I need any money for it or what?
Also, how will I learn it?

If you want to have a shot at earning rewards, you need your own towers and spells. If you want to play for fun a few beginners' games you can play for free.

There is a tutorial, a whitepaper, a channel (in Splinterlands' discord) and various people share videos or posts with their gameplay tips.
