I’m the type of gamer that always roots for the underdogs. Many times I’ve loved games that were considered bad. I don’t know why I’m like that, but hey I am not complaining. An example of this would be Homefront: The Revolution. This game was a mess at launch and even afterwards. Being riddled with bugs, trophies that are next to impossible to get thanks to gameplay mechanics, and things like that. Yet, I loved the game. There was just something about the story and the gameplay that really clicked with me. So when it comes to Assassin’s Creed most hated DLC, is it really a surprise that it is one of my favorites in the entire series?

Over the past couple of years Assassin’s Creed has moved away from their formula of the past, returned to it, and then moved away from it again, having fans divided. A lot of old school fans don’t like this RPG direction the series took and newer fans love it. As someone who has been with this series since the very first game, I fall into the camp of being an older fan of the series and loving this new direction. Except Valhalla, because that game was just complete dog crap.

One of my favorite games in the series is Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Sure, the main game doesn’t follow the Assassins vs Templar plot that games prior to Origins followed, but I still loved it. It was two of my favorite things: AC and an RPG. But many people did not like Odyssey because it was an RPG. They didn’t enjoy grinding for levels, how stealth took a back seat, and how the major conflict of the game wasn’t between the Assassins and Templars.

So when the first DLC came out for the game titled Legacy of the First Blade, it was obvious that reception to it wouldn’t be that great. To put it simply, Legacy of the First Blade was more of what AC Odyssey was. The DLC follows Darius, once protector of Persia, who was determined to put an end to the Order of Ancients ( the precursor to the Templar Order). This saw him craft the very first hidden blade and kill the Persian king.

Because of his determination to stop the Order, he was put on their hit list and him and either his daughter (if you’re playing as Alexios) or his son (if you’re playing as Kassandra) flee in an attempt to escape their wraith. But soon the hunters become the hunted. With the help of Alexios, or Kassandra, they turn the tables on the order and bring the fight to them.

The DLC really doesn’t shine until its final episode, episode 3. Up to that point the DLC is more of the same as the main game with the exception that instead of hunting down the Cult of Cosmos it’s the Order of Ancients who is targeting Alexios/Kassandra because they’re a tainted one.

The DLC heavily implies that there are more people like Alexios that they hunted down but never actually explain what a tainted one is. I tried piecing some things together and concluded that they either mean people with Isu DNA or possibly other children of Pythagoras.

Until the third episode, things are just kinda lacklustre. We see Alexios ( I played as him) develop a relationship with Neema, Darius’s daughter, with the ending of episode 2 opting for the duo to stay in the Greek world instead of fleeing.

Why was The First Blade Hated?

The Hatred for the first blade comes mostly from a certain a community, that, of course, is the “Woke” community. You see, they never complained about how the DLC was more of the same or the fact that its timeline in the events of the game is muddled. Oh no. They complained because the PC, either Alexios or Kassandra, had a kid.

At the End of episode 2 / start of episode 3. Alexios/Kassandra fell in love with Darius’s kid and had a child. Now, if you know anything about AC, having a kid was only a given, considering that all the protagonists of the series are linked by blood. But this community did not want this. They flipped out over. Because through the game you could choose if you wanted to be with men or women, or both. And how dare Ubisoft make a person’s PC have a canon romantic love interest that they have a child with, especially if in the players’ mind their character was gay?

The outrage got that bad that Ubisoft caved into the pressure. They changed the DLC to make it so that you can choose that you don’t like Darius’s child but are just doing the deed to continue your bloodline, which is completely stupid.

Why I love it

Why I love this DLC has to do with Episode 3. I played the DLC like it was meant to with the PC falling in love with Darius’s kid, which meant Alexios and Neema getting together. In Episode 3, we see Alexio’s living the good life seemingly finally getting a happy ending… Until the order finds them.

The order attacks the village, kills Neema and kidnaps Alexio’s kid. And the voice acting was amazing! Seeing Alexios going on a rampage, trying to save Darius and then rushing back to Neema only to find her dead and his kid missing gave me goosebumps. Hearing the pain in his voice whenever he talked about failing her or how much he loved her made my throat crack.

The story itself was a sort of lacklustre but the voice acting carried Episode 3. Especially at the end when after everything Alexios went through to rescue his son he gives him up to Darius to keep him safe while promising that he would never leave the order find him.

Then there was the post game scene which sees Darius walking alongside the child in Egypt. Darius disappears and the kids turn into a few different figures, making the assumption these were Alexios descendents with the very last figure being a woman on a tower and when it shows their face it turns out to be Aya from Origins. The character who in AC lore created the Assassins.

Not bad graphic in that game
!BBH

Its not bad for a game that came out 6 years ago!

Its alright, we have different minds and we have different tastes. Its not like everyone should hate or love the same thing. After checking our your post and those screenshots, I was thinking of getting back to it but later I remembered how I lost interest in this game after playing for a very short time. This was the second AC after Origins that I quit all of a sudden and I never went back to. You can say I'm that old school AC fan who likes to fight with the templars only and the best AC in my sense is still AC 2, Brotherhood and Revelations.

Oh hands down the best AC games are the Ezio trilogy. I'll die with that fact!

I'm glad to hear that. I can't imagine how AC fans like me who loved the Ezio trilogy would react to having another installment of Ezio in the future.

I dont really think there are any other games they could get out of him. All the games cover his entire life. You have the original 2 - Revelations. But then you also have the AC2 for the DS which takes place between certain chapters in the original 2 and shows what he got up too.

And then you have Embers ( animated movie) which shows him at the end of his life, and finally AC China which shows more of him training Shao Jun.

Personally I'd love it if Shao Jun got the full AC treatment. With a game chronicalling her childhood, her training with Ezio, and eventual return to china.

AC Odyssey has something different from the others indeed. I loved it. I'm currently close to finishing Valhalla and then have to catch up with Mirage quickly before Shadows releases. So looking forward to that one :)

I haven't played Mirage yet! I hated Valhalla. Felt it just kept dragging on and on and on. I was debating on getting Mirage but I want to get through the xpacs for Valhalla first!

I feel you with Valhalla. Took countless breaks just because it feels like something is constantly missing. But I really want to get it done lol

I went ahead and decided to platinum it and it took the life out of him. I was really hoping for a good viking story but it feels like Ubisoft wanted to make it a "pg 13" version.

My expectations was to be able to raid, kill etc and then it would be revealed "like in AC3" that Eivor was really a part of the Templars.

Well yeah, that would be quite what most people would like to see. I was looking for more raids as well, but I was so disappointed there are really very few available on the map. Let's hope Shadows would be a good one and make the wait worth it.

I enjoyed Black Flag but it still seems like too much commitment to play all Assassin’s Creed games. Too expensive as well.

It is a lot of commitment especially when you realize that a lot of the main storylines in the games are actually wrapped up in other media like the AC comics.
