Since I started my YouTube channel, I've found myself sifting through a bunch of brain dead articles. It's something that I really focus on because I hate how a lot of these articles either leave things out of what they're talking about, try to misrepresent a situation, or just blatantly lie. And two of the biggest offenders for doing this are Kotaku and TheGamer.
Now I went ahead and saw that TheGamer released an article saying how Resident Evil 5 was too racist for a remake. Yes, that's right. It is apparently too racist to be remade, or at least according to the braindead article.
If you guys can't remember or just never heard of it, when Resi 5 first came out the usually offenders, AKA the media who looked to demonize video games, called the game "racist" because it had Chris Redfield, a white man, killing a bunch of Africans. Most people saw through this as what it was, and that was the media just up to their old tricks again. After all this game was set in Africa, and last time I checked, Africa has a large majority of people who happen to be black.
This controversy was actually one of the very first ones I heard of when it came to video games, so you can just imagine my surprise when I saw this controversy being brought up once again in an effort to not get this game remade.
A remake for RE5 is going to happen, eventually. I mean, we already seen the other numbered games getting remade, so it's more of a when and not if situation. But the writer of this article really doesn't want to see it happen, or if it does happen they want the game that doesn't even resemble RE5.
What this writer deems racist, they want removed, meaning that a large chunk of this game would have to be removed, and in the end it wouldn't even resemble anything it used to look like. But the big kicker about this article is that the writer proves they really don't understand what Resident Evil 5 is about.
At one point in the article they claim that the natives are racist, which if you really wanted to look for racism with a magnifying glass, you might see it there, and how they shout dialect that sounds like it should be from a "30's cartoon." Their problem was with the natives themselves. Nevermind the fact that these natives are guarding an ancient flower that was a pretty big reason the T virus came into existence.
One thing I have realized about TheGamer is that they hope people don't research the things they talk about, in fact, I doubt the writers over there do any research. At one point in this article the writer mentions how the E3 trailer for this game showed Chris beating up a bunch of Africans, trying to make people believe that this was the focal point of the trailer, when in reality it showed that these Africans were infected.
Overall, there is a lot to talk about when it comes to this, and you can catch my more in-depth thoughts in the video below. Long story short, these people think RE5 is racist because a white man is killing black people infected with an offshoot of the T virus.
I remember the craze around this from back then. So dumb.
I was just surprised it was getting brought back up!
I remember the whole controversy that RE5 unfold before it was launched, I think it was really stupid, on the other hand I don't want to imagine how it would be nowadays with its possible Remake taking in count how extremely sensitivity internet has become xD
I can just imagine what a "remake" would look like!
Like a completely irreconocible game lol
Greetings boy. This Game is Brutal. i can never win.
Modern media’s difficulty with facts and logic is truly entertaining. Wherever a story takes place, most characters will probably be from the biggest local demographic—it’s not rocket science. This reminds me of your post about some gaming magazine saying Elden Ring was sexist when the strongest, most badass, boss in the game was a woman lol
Man, I got to play a lot this video game on the XBOX360, it was very fun and exciting, something totally different from re4, but for me re4 is much more important, because it was who gave life to this one
Journalists have done but ride the curtails of controversies for a long time. I hope Capcom ignores what people are saying and just release a good remake. Even with the co-op feature.
I actually had no idea about it for the original.. I just saw it as a Resident Evil game with trying to survive the zombies, having fun playing and the fact that the location it is set means a lot of the zombies would be natives.
This is why I don't listen to reviews, I enjoy things and I give things a shot if I am not fully sure but have looked into it, seeing it might be something I like.
