Monster Hunter Wilds - Benchmarks on My PC

I didn't think I'd be saying this so soon, but... my PC kinda sucks.
It's got a nice enough CPU and a GPU that handled just about everything I threw at it, those being the i5 7600 and a 1660 Super.

I know, not high end by any means, but excluding games that require Raytracing (Indiana Jones for instance), there were no titles it couldn't handle at at least 1080 low with FSR performance... Sure, I haven't tested every game in the world on it, so I'm just saying this out of personal experience. But now that I tried Monster Hunter Wilds' benchmark, I'm scared lmao.

My dear friend @stk-g was the one who told me about the benchmark tool after I told them that my friend from Australia will be gifting me this game once it releases on Steam.

So, what are the results?

1st run

Sorry for no screenshots, I forgot to take them

For my first run I got a little cocky and decided to run the game at medium with FSR on balanced and Frame-gen on.
Whilst 44.07FPS sounds nice on paper... It really wasn't, the game was an absolute stutterfest, it kept artifacting, and just did not run well at all.

2nd run

For my second run, I lowered the settings to lowest and kept frame-gen on, there was still stutter, but way less. It felt kind of playable (as if I could even play it, I mean, you know, it's a benchmark tool).

3rd run

Then I decided to try it out without frame-gen on low settings with FSR.
A solid 30-40FPS throughout, with averages on 30.93. This may sound terrible... and it is, but it's likely how I'll be playing the game. I've played many games at 30FPS throughout the years, specially on PS4 and Xbox One (with some like Just Cause 3 dipping below the 30FPS target) so I'm sort of accostumed to it - but man oh man, CAPCOM did not do a good job of optmization here.

The Future

I can only guess that things will get better with time, but we'll have to wait and see.
It's currently 04:48am as I write this and the open beta test is now available.

Which of course means I'm downloading it. I'll play it thoroughly and if there's anything interesting to report on it, I'll write another post.
But for now, I'm just happy I get at least 30FPS without frame gen hahahaha... This old machine will have to keep doing its job for a few more years before I upgrade it. Keep it up 1660 Super! Hang in there i5! (lol)

Thanks for reading, and I hope y'all enjoy the beta test if you're interested in Monster Hunter - I've been playing this franchise since the 3DS days and even went back to play the original on PS2. It's a great game.

We're kinda on the same boat, that doesn't mean we won't enjoy the game let's goooooooooooooo

Woohoo!

I can only tell you that I hope you manage to find that adaptation even though you are going to play it at 30 FPS. I'm usually not one of those who like to play with maximum resolution and everything in 4K, I hate that, I've always felt that games in ULTRA settings do not end up performing as they should no matter how well optimized they are. I always tend to look for parity between advanced settings and resolution, I usually play games at 720P or max at 1080p. In these resolutions the games end up running perfect, but of course this is a personal opinion.

I'm already running at lowest settings 1080p hahaha
I very rarely play games at 4K, since my 4K screen is on the living room, but when I do it's mostly indie games or easy to run titles.

Ah okok! Well I just hope you can still get a good gaming experience, I guess that's the most important thing. greetings!

Good optimization works on any resolution, but 2K and 4K are really GPU intensive and it doesn't mean it's bad optimized, I mean, Wilds IT'S BAD OPTIMIZED, but I can give you Kingdom Come Deliverance II as a good example, it runs very well on 4K, if you have the correct hardware of course, that's not the game's fault.

But even now 1080 is still the standard for most people, it'll pass some time until we can say that 2K or 4K are standards.

In my case, I play everything on 1080p because my GPU nor my monitor can manage more, I'm not interested on 2K or 4K at all, but it must be nice playing on those resolutions with a nice monitor.

1660 Super still runs games decently almost 6 years after being released, probably with a driver update you might get 3-5 extra fps.

Also 3000 series prices are going down pretty fast nowadays, you can find 3060 at under 200$, sometimes even a Ti.

I'm on the latest Nvidia drivers for Linux already, but hopefully the next kernel does what it promises and improves CPU performance.

The 3060 is way more expensive than that here in Brazil unfortunately. I plan on getting a RX 7600.

That's a great pick, I always went with Nvidia in the last years because of the DLSS and Shadowplay, I can record gameplay using less resources than using OBS.

But AMD came back strongly with the new RX series.

Although the 1660S is old, the game itself also has its flaws. I've been watching people with very good PCs doing the tests and they all have the same FPS drop at the same point: When the hunter jumps to the first zone. It's unreal that even having the recommended requirements, the game is designed to use Frame Generation if you want stability at 60 🤦‍♂. I hope you can get that 7600 soon.
