Of course they do these things and most of us are aware of it. When we watch movies, we all know that the protagonist will be saved at the last moment, the important thing is how it happens and how it is made to feel to the audience (in games, to the player). I haven't always played successful genres, but sometimes I've played games that are terrible at it, and games that successfully convey this action deserve praise.

What makes you say that a certain game is terrible at it? Do you have a specific title in mind as an example?
I can't think of a game name right now, but haven't you ever played such a game? A game with scenes that are supposed to be exciting but don't feel that way at all. I'm sure I've had such experiences in the past, but I can't remember the names of the games. I'll write it when I remember.
I mostly play multiplayer games, so not really. The only one that comes to mind is Final Fantasy XIII. That game holds your hand for like 50% of the story. I almost stopped playing, but then the game finally opened up and made it a great experience in the end.
