Crypto Game Review: REVV Racing

REVV Racing is an NFT-based racing game built on the Polygon blockchain. Join me as I review one of the leading games in the blockchain space and let you know if it’s worth your time and money…or not!

But first: My reviews come from a ‘game first’ perspective. I am looking to explore how the game works and why it is or isn’t enjoyable to play. Whilst I will cover the financial aspect of the games I review (they cannot be ignored after all), this is not my priority. If you want to know if this game might make you rich, this review is not for you. If you want to know if this is a game that will give you an enjoyable experience and keep you coming back for more – read on!

What is REVV Racing?

REVV Racing is a racing game. It’s as simple as that. You race cars and try to be the fastest. It is a simluation style racer with high quality, realistic graphics.

What makes REVV Racing special is the space that it lives in. In a world of DeFi dressed up as a game, REVV is a legitimate video game with a crypto element. Instead of promising you riches if you invest enough and keep showing up, REVV asks a different question. Are you good enough? Can you bring your car and prove yourself? If you perform well you will receive rewards in the form of crypto currency. It’s a simple concept, but a hard one to implement. Luckily for them, REVV racing has the force of Animoca Brands behind it. As an established game developer, they understand what it takes to make a good game, and are busy balancing this with the reality of the Blockchain world of expectation of yield and returns. The result is a basic, but honest, racing simulator that is infuriatingly fun to play.

The trade off? You have to pay to enter a race. The entry fee is modest but poor performance will inevitably lead to losing most of it. A blockchain game with CONSEQUENCE, SKILL and CHALLENGE? It’s shocking this is such a novel concept and that’s what makes REVV a trailblazer in this world. It’s also why I love it!

Still interested? Let’s look at how to get started in REVV Racing.

Getting Started

I could skip this part and direct you to the slick “Getting Started” video REVV have release. It stars an up and coming racing driver talking you through the game and you can watch it here. Instead I am going to do my best to explain it in a few paragraphs.

To race in REVV you will first need to own a car. These cars are available on OpenSea and can be purchased relatively cheaply through the Polygon network. At the time of writing the cost of a basic car plus gas fees is under USD$10.

Then you will need to own some $REVV coins as an entry fee to the race. These can be purchased on most Polygon exchanges but QuickSwap is my personal choice. 5 REVV nets you one race attempt.

Handling the car is a skill you will need to practice so there is low-stakes practice mode to help you hone your skills. Being a simulation style racer, the controls can be pretty unforgiving. Once you are feeling confident, then it's time to race. Spend your entry fee, load the game and race your heart out.

Events and track change from day to day to keep things fresh and the rewards are calculated based on cycles of a day or less meaning there is always another new race to join. This routine of relatively low-stake races is punctuated by special events with bigger rewards and special modifiers.

From there it’s over to you. If you crash, spin out or just take a corner at the wrong angle, you risk dropping further down the rankings. At the end of each event rewards are distributed to drivers based on performance.

The Bottom Line

From the slick graphics to the nicely designed cars, REVV is leaps and bounds ahead of any other racing game in the blockchain space. For those among us with a talent for racing, it can also be a lucrative pursuit with top prizes in the hundreds and even thousands of US dollars. Whatever your level, you can play for rewards and enjoy the game for what it is: a quality racing simulator with a crypto element.

The game is very early in its journey which is worth keeping in mind as you play. You will find the features and experience quite bare bones in places. This really hits home when you take your 100th spin around the exact same track. Likewise, racing events are running 24/7 but the regular weekly events can seem a little repetitive and not quite worth the effort and expenditure of the entry fee. Another issue in these early days can be the extremely long time between completing an event and receiving your rewards. They do always arrive, and are often far more generous than you might expect, but it can leave you waiting for the funds to cover your next race.

Regardless of these faults, which will no doubt improve over time, REVV is rapidly becoming a complete racing package and with addition features due in the future which will no doubt see many more reason to jump in and race. When you hit the track and the starting light flashes green, all of these thoughts will be left behind as you focus in for a few minutes of white knuckle racing in the hope of creeping further up the rankings for glory and rewards.

Sort:

first time I see about this game, wow, they are implementing any type of games to the Blockchain, that's great, graphically it reminds me a lot of NFS
