Quest of Dungeons: a rogue-like 16-bit time killer!

in Hive Gaming5 years ago

It's been a while since I've written anything gaming-related (and I dare decorate myself with the title of ''gamer'' in my Twitter bio and not share proof of it, huh?). I assure you, I am a gamer! I play games! I've played them since I was a toddler! I like games! (Okay, now that I keep repeating it, it sounds weird and fake).

On my last job interview I got asked about my hobbies, and since video games were one of them, I got asked a more specifying question: what kind of games do I usually play? Well, I find it difficult giving a clear one-sided answer to it. It all depends on my mood, really. I enjoy several different kinds of game genres - one day I could be playing your typical MMORPG, the other day I'd be exploring and doing quests in an open world RPG, or I'd be just killing time without the need of thinking too much in a permadeath roguelike dungeon crawler.

And so we get to the real point of this post - a good example of a time killer.

Quest of Dungeons

The first time I ever heard of and played Quest of Dungeons was on the Nintendo Switch. My partner had found the game somehow on the Nintendo Store, tried it out and couldn't put the console away. It's simple, addicting and a great time killer! I'm not sure how much time I've spent playing it on the Switch, but I can say I liked it so much I got it for Steam aswell.

(Apparently it's available to play on Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android, and it's priced somewhere between $1 and $5).

I've tried playing it with the Steam Controller and just on a laptop's keyboard, and I've got to say I enjoy playing it much more with a controller rather than a keyboard.

(Choosing a character).

As I already mentioned, the game itself is quite simple. You can choose between four characters - a warrior, a wizard, an archer and a shaman. (Those who've played RPGs before can surely guess their attack styles).

My go-to character is a wizard. For some reason I mostly tend to choose the mage class in most RPGs I play. What can I say... I just like magic. Technically I'd say the wizard is the second best (or second easiest) character to play in QoD, since you can cast magic attacks from long distance, but it costs MP (mana points) which if you run out of you'd either have to drink mana potions, run into a mana fountain or just level up by killing monsters or doing quests.

The best or easiest character to play from my point of view is the archer - just like the wizard you can do long-distance attacks, but it doesn't require any mana points to do so.

A warrior's attack is with a sword and short-distance, and shaman... well, I'm not really sure. I've tried it out once, I think, but I can't say much about it. You have to try it out yourself or do some research of your own. ;)

Most of what you do in the game is kill monsters and bump into stuff. By bumping into stuff like coffins, vases, crates, etc, you could get all kinds of different loot from valuable gems to armor to stinky poisonous cheese (I don't reccommend eating it). All the loot you get can be sold to merchants.

Sometimes monsters and items you bump into drop certain kinds of keys (doom key, square key, etc) which can be used to unlock locked doors and chests.

And sometimes you bump into uhmm... statues? that give you a small quest. Usually the quests are either finding a certain thing (like a crown or a broken lamp) or killing a mini-boss that looks just like an ordinary monster but colored a bit differently and has more health points.

There are also bigger bosses that I usually take out once I've killed all other monsters on the floor and equipped the best gear I've got on the same floor.

Speaking of floors and the game's map itself - it's all generated randomly each time you play it - the rooms, what's in them, etc. Oh, and since it's a roguelike you have to keep in mind it's permadeath a.k.a once you get killed, that's it, you start the game all over again. I know some people dislike having to start games all over again, especially after they've played it for over half an hour, but that's most probably the point of Quest of Dungeons - it's a time-killer!

And even though I already covered a lot about the game, there's still so much to discover, so why not grab yourself a copy and try it out for yourself? (Or just do some more research through other sources).

Interesting game you have found there, I might even give it a try in the near future.

Also I really suggest you start using the BATTLE tag whenever you make gaming content.
That way I can upvote you with my Staked BATTLE, and you will earn some extra tokens to your Steem-Engine wallet.

I haven't even heard about the BATTLE tag yet, but I'll certainly try it out on my next gaming post!Oh, thanks, @tsnaks!

Huh, I had totally missed the release of this game. It sounds like something I could really enjoy! Thanks for the post!

Thank You for stopping by and reading! :)
