You’re looking to get into dCity? You’re in the right place. If you’re not looking to get into dCity but you’re here, get into dCity anyway. This guide will build a small 5 card starter city just to show some basic mechanics to get you started.

Simple, cheap, and a great foundation for further expansion. If that sounds good, keep reading!

The Resources

First, there’s three resources to keep in mind, and to keep you up to date.

Official Hive Account

Follow the official @dcitygame account for the official updates.

Official Discord

In-Game Information

In the dCity game, there's the INFO tab. Give that a good read-through. You can portion it out over several reading sessions, but this is where a lot of great information is found.

This page also contains the holy ALL CARDS LIST. You’ll be referencing this quite a bit as you grow your city, to find fitting cards to buy.

The 5 Card Starter City

If you’re reasonable and patient, you can head to the in-game market and place a few bids on the following cards. This is most likely the smart move, and a way of thinking to remember.

Buy below true value, sell above true value.

But for this quick start guide, I’d just pick up the cards at current value. They’re not that expensive, and the lesson thought by these cards are worth far more just getting you started.

Head to the in-game market and pick up:

  1. 3x Basic Home
  2. 1x Farm
  3. 1x Church

I paid around 12000 SIM for this setup at current market prices.
Behold your starting town in dCity!

A few villagers with simple homes, a farm for a day's honest work, and a church for sundays. Cozy, cozy! You’re mainly going to focus on the stats these cards give.

First up, is the Income stat. To earn any SIM, you’re going to need to build up your city’s income stat.

But that would be too easy, right? Enter the Taxes. Taxes are in place to handle the inflation of SIMs. The tax settings are largely dependent on the elected president. As you might have noticed, you’re being taxed out to the max, and some more!

Honestly, don’t get hung up on taxes in the beginning. Assume we’re going to be taxed to the bare bones generally for the foreseeable future, and assume that it’s a good thing, as it protects the overall health of the economy and of dCity. I’m no economist, but my Economist NFT Card tells me so.

Accept, and adapt. Adopt a strategy around the tax issue. That’s where the Church comes in. The Church gives you 1 Tax Refund. Huzzah!

Your total cards are earning a total income of 10 SIM. This is being taxed away. But due to owning a Church, you’re getting a piece of this taxed income back.

dcity-taxincome.png

This means that your Tax Refund cannot exceed your total income. To increase your actual earning, you need to find a good balance between getting Income producing cards and Tax Refund granting cards.

To simplify further, just focus on obtaining Tax Refund granting cards. The Income production will almost automatically be fixed by simply buying the cards needed for operating the Tax Refund cards.

This is where the Basic Home and the Farm enters the equation. The Basic Home is a good building block for your city. It provides you with Workers that operates the other cards. This is what the Population stat does. The higher population, the more workers who can activate other cards.

The Farm is another truly great card. It is an Income producing card. This is good as you need a high income to be taxed away, otherwise there’s no income to Refund, right?

The Farm also increases your Population, as there’s a farmhouse on the property for the farmers to live in. And an increased Population is good. More workers to operate other cards, that might not come with built in a Population boost.

It also increases your Popularity. Everybody loves a family farm. Fresh vegetables, local meat, raw milk, and so on. This makes your city more attractive for workers to move to. Popularity is a boost to Population. Look at that:

Your popular city gets 1 bonus worker, for being in such good shape!

Basically, that’s it. No need to complicate things further at the start.

The Next Step

Do you want to start earning 2 SIM per day? Pick up another Church, and maybe some Basic Home if workers are needed to operate the Church.

Head out on the ALL CARDS LIST to look for another good card to add to your city. Use the Simulator to check what happens if you add that card to your city, so you know what supporting cards you might need to buy.

Learn the relationship between Income and Tax Refund.

Learn the balance between Population, Popularity, and Workers Needed (People To Hire and Unemployed).

Learn to use the Simulator to try adding a card you want, seeing what stats you need to increase to support that new card, and using the ALL CARDS LIST and Market to find good deals on cards that increase your needed stats.

Add to this concept, bit by bit, and you’ll see progress.

Later you’ll learn about Unemployment and Social Support, Citizens and the Lifecycle, and Crisis and Prevention.

But that’s for later down the line.

The Disclaimer

As always, non of this is financial advice. Do your own research.

At the time of posting this guide, this is a quick, cheap, and viable way to get started earning your first SIM in dCity. This is my opinion, of course. As with a slightly complex game such as dCity, the strategies are many. That’s part of the fun.

Also, dCity is ever-changing with new card editions, new mechanics, updates of older mechanics, and so on. If this guide is read in 6 months, things might be different. But by then, you’re already an experienced mayor who’s ready to deal with new changes.

Welcome to dCity, Mayor! Will you be running for President next?
