Today is Throwback Thursday, and I want to dedicate this #TBT to one of the most iconic video games of my childhood and that of many others: Metal Slug 3. Talking about this title is like opening a time capsule that takes us back to the arcade rooms, where every token was a treasure, and every game was an unforgettable adventure.
Released in the year 2000 by SNK, Metal Slug 3 is the crown jewel of this run-and-gun (or "shoot-'em-up," a term I prefer, haha) franchise. Its detailed pixel art style, energy-packed soundtrack, and unique sense of humor make it a game that remains just as relevant today as it was more than two decades ago.
The game puts us in the shoes of Marco, Tarma, Eri, and Fio, soldiers who face hordes of enemies in a mission that blends military action with touches of science fiction and, of course, a bit of madness. From beaches infested with giant crabs to dark tunnels full of zombies, each level is a unique experience, packed with challenges and surprises.
One of the most iconic aspects of the game is the Slugs, those combat vehicles that take the action to another level. From the classic tank to submarines and camels equipped with machine guns (yes, camels with weapons), each one adds a layer of strategy and fun that keeps us hooked.

What made and still makes Metal Slug 3 special wasn’t just its frenetic gameplay but also the ability to play with a friend. Completing levels in co-op mode was an unmatched experience, filled with shared laughter, moments of frustration, and, of course, competing for the highest scores.
If there was one thing that defined this game, it was its difficulty. With enemies appearing from all directions, giant bosses, and the constant shortage of ammunition, Metal Slug 3 was a true challenge that made us sweat. But every victory felt glorious, and the sense of accomplishment was indescribable.
Metal Slug 3 defined an era. It was more than just a simple shooter; it was an interactive work of art that combined stunning visual design, precise mechanics, and a hearty dose of nostalgia. Even today, it remains an incredible experience for those looking for a trip down memory lane or simply a title that has aged remarkably well.

Ah, the days of sweating over the joystick to survive those relentless waves of enemies! Metal Slug is truly a masterpiece. Your description brought back so many fond memories of the arcade days. Thanks for bringing this gem back into the spotlight.
I'm glad you share that feeling; it was definitely a golden era! Those memories of spending hours in front of the machines, with sweaty hands from playing so much, are the best. Every game was an adventure, and those machines were like portals to other worlds. What a time it was, haha!
I know about this iconic series but never got a chance to play it. It wasn't in many game shops back in the day but we had a lot of similar run-and-gun games where even watching the gameplay was so exciting let alone playing it.
I’m sorry for not writing earlier😬, but yes, this game is incredibly iconic, and now reflecting on it, it was truly a miracle that it made it here. I was lucky to be able to play it during my childhood, aside from the arcade where my parents used to take me for meals on weekends. I don’t remember any others in my city, or at least none with the quality of the ones here. There was also a GP motorcycle one I remember, and the Street Fighter one too—what a memory!
