Greetings, my friends from #HiveGaming. I hope you're having an excellent day.
Today is all about classics, and I’m bringing you a retro gem: Ice Climber, a platform game developed by Nintendo for the NES around 1984. I also understand that it was later released in arcades under the title VS Ice Climbers.
I’m also here to share some images from one of my sessions playing this amazing classic.
Stay tuned and enjoy!
First of all, let's talk about the mechanics and what the game is all about.
The mechanics are quite simple. Here, you control an Eskimo (of whom the game gives no information) but turns out to be named Popo. If you play cooperatively, your companion controls his twin sister named Nana. They must jump with a hammer, breaking ice blocks to create holes in the floor above and climb up.
As you go up, the lower floors disappear, so needless to say, a fall can be fatal. Besides avoiding falls and climbing floors, you also need to watch out for and defeat seals, yetis, icicles, and the pterodactyls flying around the stage.
Pretty simple, right?
¿¿Bastante simple verdad??
This is how the levels look, and by the way, there are a total of 32 of them—something I couldn’t even complete half of in my 2 hours of gameplay. (Who could have been the evil genius behind these games that were so difficult, despite having such simple mechanics? They say the Souls series is known for its difficulty. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Amateurs compared to games like this, where there were no checkpoints or anything to save your progress. These are the true character-builders of the gaming industry.
Since death was the greatest achievement one could get, I tried to find a strategy to make some progress, but honestly, even time was working against me, forcing us to restart over and over again.
It had been years since I played this, but after many attempts, the farthest I managed to reach was level 13, and that's without mentioning that I almost never managed to complete the bonus stages.
One special thing about Ice Climber, or Aisu Kuraima as it's known in Japanese, is that it's a game capable of destroying even the strongest friendships if played in cooperative mode, as it lends itself to making your partner's life miserable in countless ways. Whether it's by breaking the floor where they stand, jumping on them, leaving them behind, or interrupting their progress.
And to wrap things up, here are a few fun facts about this title:
As I mentioned earlier, the game has 32 levels or mountains, but this doesn’t technically count as an ending. Once you finish them, the game resets to level 1, but the mountain counter keeps increasing—33, 34, and so on.
In the Japanese version, the Topi enemies were small blue seals, but in the international version, they were replaced with the yetis most of us know. This change was made after Americans protested, saying it was too violent to hit seals with hammers.
At the end of each level, if you grab onto a pterodactyl before time runs out, you can score a lot of extra bonus points. However, if you're playing cooperatively, only one player can grab onto the pterodactyl's legs. (I think these sessions were more like the first steps toward competitive gaming rather than cooperative ones, haha.)
If you take too long to climb, a polar bear wearing sunglasses will appear, making it much harder to reach the top.

This game was one of the games I spent the most time playing in my childhood with my Nintendo NES. I remember that it annoyed me a lot, sometimes the gameplay in terms of difficulty got really motherfucker hahahaha xD. But I was very masochistic, the next day I played it again.
The only flaw I see in this game is in the jumps, to me it was very complicated at the beginning to get the rhythm to the jumps, but other than that a good game to pass the time.
Yes, the jumps are quite tricky until you get the hang of them, and the difficulty is a real prank from the developers, haha.
And to pass the time, it's amazing! It's a shame that many people today don't give these classics a chance.
What nostalgia you have given me with Ice Climber, this video game was a bomb on the Nintendo NES, it was a very epic game and I always fell into the void when I was about to reach the bird that would take me out of each level, it was very complicated, but playing with a friend to this game was another level, it was very good and reminded me of those moments that I played a lot with my family.
A true damn classic!
👌
This brings back a lot of old memories. I played it with my brother. It was really fun. I still remember a lot of gameplay parts, loved those bonus stages you would get.
That's the goal, to bring back those good memories. I used to play it a lot with a friend too, and we had a great time.
