Beatstar - Touch Your Music review and tracklist

in Hive Gaming4 years ago

Hello friends and Hive Gamers! I'm here to tell you about a new mobile rhythm game I tried recently called Beatstar - Touch Your Music. As far as I know, the game is not officially available in the US, so I had to get it from QooApp. But you can get notified of when it will be available in your region by signing up for their mailing list on the official website.

Beatstar is a mobile rhythm game from SpaceApe games featuring popular top40-style music from a variety of genres like electronica, hip-hop, alternative, pop, and rock. Lots of famous names grace the huge 138-song tracklist.

The gameplay is simple -- notes fall from the top of the screen and you tap when they reach the bottom. There's tap notes, hold notes, and flick notes. Interestingly, it's played in portrait mode, so there are only three lanes of notes to tap. There are also no 'sliding' notes where you have to slide your fingers around the screen, which is a big plus to those of us who like to play these games for hours, where your fingers' natural oils start running out and you start getting too much friction on the screen to play properly.

Don't let the three lines fool you -- this isn't an easy game by any means. In fact, it's not all that beginner-friendly, so if you're looking for a first rhythm game, I wouldn't suggest starting here. (I would, however, point you to the free-to-play VOEZ on mobile!)

Unlike most rhythm games you're familiar with, songs don't have a general difficulty to them. Instead, as you progress deeper into a song, the "level" rises and the tap chart becomes increasingly difficult. On top of that, if you make a single mistake, you fail the song and must either pay diamonds (premium currency) or start over from the very beginning and try again if you want to complete the song.

While the game isn't newbie-friendly, I wouldn't say it's terribly difficult for seasoned rhythm players (though there is an "Extreme" difficulty that I haven't reached yet). But that doesn't mean you're going to perfect the game right away -- on each song you can earn up to five stars as well as bonus Gold, Platinum, and Diamond medals for your score. Obtaining these is not easy.

Every note you tap that is "Perfect" adds to your combo, which builds up a score multiplier over time. Get a "Great" and your combo is broken along with your multiplier taking a hit. And as I mentioned before, miss once and you've failed the song. There's also "Perfect+" which give you much more score, but the timing is very precise to get that scoring.

You can full-combo a song and not even get 5 stars if you got too many Perfects and not enough Perfects+. And if you're wanting to get those elusive Diamond medals you're going to have to play almost flawlessly (or perhaps even flawlessly; I've never gotten one myself) through an entire song of increasing difficulty. So there's definitely fun there for the seasoned rhythm game fan who likes to improve upon their scores and go for the perfect run.

There's also regional and friends leaderboards if you want to compare your progress to others!

As you clear songs and get stars on them, you'll build up a collection of stars that progresses you toward unlocking new features and available music to play. As you play songs, you also earn Beat Coins which give you loot boxes that take time to open. These essentially give you new songs, and more songs means more potential stars.

What's great about all of this is that there's no limit to how much you can play. Even if you fill up your three loot box slots and one is taking 3 hours to open, you can still play songs as many times as you want. No cooldowns, no stamina system, no ads. Just play your music as much as you want! While you won't earn Beat Coins to get more loot boxes when your boxes are full, you can still have fun trying to improve your scores and practicing your favorite songs, which is what rhythm gaming is all about.

Unlocking all the music in the game is going to take quite a while as you have to wait on loot boxes. That's where the premium aspect of the game comes in -- if you're impatient and want more content without having to wait, you can purchase songs (still at random, mind you) with real money through a Play Store transaction.

I've been playing for 2-3 days and haven't spent any money. So far I've collected 17 songs (I think you start with 4 or 5), and am nowhere near perfecting all of them. Progress seems like it will slow down significantly the longer the game goes on, as songs take more "cards" to unlock each time you win a song from a specific genre.

What's nice, though, is that once you hit Level 3 player level, you can start a "wishlist" and can get wish boxes that will always pull a song from your wishlist.

Lastly, I just want to say that I love the aesthetic of the game. It's very clean and sleek. Each song has its own monotone color scheme, so you'll be seeing a lot of yellow while playing "Talk" by Khalid, for example. Sound effects are simple and not distracting at all (there's a very feint swish sound when you lose your combo, for example). Overall the game looks and sounds great.

There's other nice little touches, like songs being ordered by relative scoring -- the songs you need to work on most will be at the top of the list, while your best songs are at the bottom. This also makes it so all your medaled songs are neatly placed next to one another! It seems like a lot of care was put into the interface of the game to make it pleasing both to look at and to use.

I highly recommend picking up the app; if you can't get it in your region, just nab the APK somewhere else.

Welcome to Hive and HGC my dude! Love that mustache of yours. Would be cool to follow some of your game development if you get into that. We need more games in the chain for sure!

All other rhythm games have been dead to me since I got into Beat Saber. It’s just so unique and awesome that none other do it for me anymore. An impressive list of sing songs this game though! That’s one thing Beat Saber is lacking. You can buy more but it gets expensive in the long term. There’s also a wild number of custom songs that can be installed but they’re not as well mapped as the original ones.

See you around my dude! Looking forward to more content from you.

Thanks so much!

I've been a rhythm game player since Parappa and DDR days, I can't get enough of them. I haven't had the pleasure of being able to play Beat Saber myself, but it seems like a blast!
