Dredge - Finally managed to install the Versatile Rod

in Hive Gaming15 days ago

Hello and Welcome back to my blog!

In my last post on Dredge, I talked about getting some more upgrades to my boat and finding a ruined temple up north where we saw a Fanatic and got a new quest. But because of our inability to catch fish from the deep we came back to the Marrows to find more research parts and research a suitable rod to see them.

Our net was catching fish passively, and it has its own space, so it doesn't even require empty space in the cargo.

I went around the Marrows to the unexplored cliffs. I sailed the southeastern side of the map closer to the Gale Cliffs, a major area. I found a new type of eel there. Although, I have gone to dredge raw materials out of those spots, especially to look for the rare 'bolts of cloth'. Conger Eel is still a Shallow Fish so it wasn't as rare as I thought, it was just that I have not fished a lot at night and it remains active only at night.

Further ahead, I found a floating platform close to one of the cliffs. It was a familiar face, the Travelling Merchant. How is she everywhere? lol

This was called the Dusty Pontoon and had a fish market, a floating dock to unlock more upgrades and a shipyard to install those upgrades like fishing rods or better engines.

She had a stock of a couple of research parts but I needed more money to buy them.

So my main focus was on catching more fish and selling it at this place. But this was a huge place so it doesn't hurt to explore and see what else I can find here. While I was fishing and moving towards a new place I saw a bottle with a message. It was a list of items shipped from Little Marrow and other places.

I spent the rest of the day fishing and filled my cargo quickly. Selling that catch gave me enough money for one more research part. This was the last part I wanted to get the Versatile Rod. Finally, after a long time, I unlock a rod which can catch four types of fish but it requires 5 slots.

I bought it for over 300 bucks, and uninstalled the other rod that I had but when I tried to install this one. I was surprised to see that I could not orient it in any way to fit in my five slots. You could only rotate it and try to fit in the five slots that I had but it must be mirrored. And there is no way you can mirror it. I felt so frustrated and sad to know that. The only way I could install this was to find more raw material and fit one more slot which could hold the rod. That is not an easy process.

This was one of the most frustrating things I experienced in the game. I was so ready and excited to install this and had exactly 5 slots but damn, there was no way to fit it there.

After this setback, I installed the old rod and set sail. I am no more afraid to travel at night. In the morning I reached Ingfell and met with a lady with a dog. She wanted to prepare a special meal for her partner but having an issue. The fish it required should be aged but her dog keeps eating it.

She wants us to deliver those almost rotting Conger Eels. For now, I am selling everything as soon as I catch them.

I went on and kept exploring and fishing near the cliffs. In the middle of the day when I was fishing a monstrous fish came out of the water and attacked us. I had never seen that fish before and it damaged our hull and made us lose some fish.

I thought it would go away after attacking once but nope, it came back again and attacked once more. That's when I ran away from that place. I always thought these things happen only at night not in the day.

I went back to a safe harbour, sold my fish and went back to fishing. I didn't go to that area again. These cliffs seem to be a challenging place for ships. There were a lot of shipwrecks around these cliffs. Destruction everywhere!

I found some more raw materials and got enough to finally modify my cargo spaces to get +3 rod spaces.

For the first time, I had filled my storage. I sold some of my old rods and engine parts to get more money. Went on to install that rod which I bought but couldn't fit in my cargo. Finally, I can catch fish in four types of water easily. I still need a few more rods to catch all the types of fish or replace my versatile rod when I need them.

Until next time...

Reading this makes me feel a real pull toward trying Dredge at some point. The mix of exploration, upgrading your boat, and these eerie encounters sounds so unique. The frustration with fitting the rod into the cargo is oddly relatable—it’s the kind of challenge that keeps you invested. Plus, the world feels alive, with merchants popping up in unexpected places and danger lurking even during the day. Definitely a game I’d like to dive into when I get the chance!

It is a great game, I am having a lot of fun playing it. However, I wished I had more time to play this daily.

But with all this experience fishing does it really happen during live fishing in the sea?
