Kingdom Come Deliverance: Journal #1

It's been some time since I was taken by a game so much, one I know I will look back fondly on instead of instantly forgetting. This explains my writing absence on HIVE of late. I can't drag myself off it.

Kingdom Come Deliverance – Royal Edition has been collecting dust on the shelf for a while. This is my third attempt to play and this time it clicked. I can’t remember what happened on the first run, but the second was definitely down to me getting some rusty sword, using the grinder and making it even worse due to my terrible maintenance skill.

You see, this game tries to emulate real life, does not hold your hand, and that's the appeal. Everything is hard at first as you play as Henry, the Peasant who has no skills whatsoever in anything.

I am not going to attempt to review this game as there are countless other reviews on Metacritic, so instead I will present a journal hopefully with ideas that can get you started a little easier and not rage quit.

So long as I don't get bored of it like I do with most games, what I present will add some value to a beginner player as that is always my intent when writing anything and hopefully, there will be more than one Kingdom Come Deliverance journal.

The fighting mechanics of Kingdom Come Deliverance are cumbersome and difficult to master. A first-person view with melee weapons is hardly ideal, and though I prefer third-person games I tolerate it due to the rich storyline and medieval setting.

The game is set loosely in the Czech Republic though it reminds me of England with the sprawling forests and meadows. For a second-rate game from 2018, it looks fantastic on my PS5.

The prologue is long and heart-wrenching, and these articles will contain no story spoilers, but like most games, it takes a few hours to get into it, and for the open world to become navigable.

You will have utterly shit gear to begin with and no weapon. If you follow the main story, the garrison of Rattay will eventually give you some rudimentary armour and a basic club… however…

When you go back to Skalitz (during the prologue), ritually search all the dead corpses you may come across a bad-quality Axe or Sword. I managed the former and managed to sharpen it this time on the Blacksmiths grindstone.

Kingdom Come Deliverance takes the stance used in Skyrim. Practice a skill and it increases. I have always liked this motivation, and even talking to other NPCs raises your Speech skills.

Kingdom Come_ Deliverance Royal Edition_20241119103141.jpg

Speech is important as it's a factor to influence other NPCs, as per all the other skills in the game, don't neglect it and always 'talk' at every opportunity.

Maintenance Skill

Even at zero skill, it’s not so difficult to sharpen your extra bad Axe or Sword on a Grindstone that can be found near most Blacksmiths. The trick is to find the sweet spot and mash the L2 button (PS5) until you are out of energy.

Kingdom Come_ Deliverance Royal Edition_20241115224545.jpg

If you fuck it up and decrease the quality to 0%, you can always try again. This is something I didn't fully read about on my second attempt at the game.

Kingdom Come_ Deliverance Royal Edition_20241119104249.jpg

With a Maintenance skill of 10, it’s now a synch to get any bladed weapon to 100%.

If you have the Grochen (currency), buy Training in any skill you want to raise. It’s not expensive, you can haggle and it raises your skill by a full point.

Combat

Captain Bernard will train you for free. Join him outside the north gates of Rattay and engage with practice weapons. Don’t use real ones as he will kick your arse and leave you wounded and bleeding.

Kingdom Come_ Deliverance Royal Edition_20241119103433.jpg

...Using Training Weapons will also fuck you up, but not as much...

If you score against him, you will raise skills in Defence, Warfare, Agility, Vitality and whatever weapon you are using.

...'thanks Captain, for the free grievous injuries...'...

It can get tedious being constantly beaten up but you will need a weapon skill of at least (3) for this next tip I will give you.

Money is a big problem in the early game, use the free soup urns to keep Henry from starving, they refill daily and there are lots of them around.

You have lots of clothes and armour slots to fill in Kingdom Come Deliverance, just my type of game. How do you get these?

Kingdom Come_ Deliverance Royal Edition_20241119110454.jpg

Bandits can be easy targets but they can also hand you your arse. I found a spot where they wait for unsuspecting peasants and where you can ambush them from behind.

Kingdom Come_ Deliverance Royal Edition_20241119110520.jpg
...'you can see him on the road waiting, sometimes his mates are in the trees to the left, so go that way first'...

This seems to work every few days, even though the next lot of Bandits will see a pile of corpses piled up from your last lot of work.

Kingdom Come_ Deliverance Royal Edition_20241119110623.jpg

Crouch and approach this area from the forest and you will see them waiting to pounce. Ever so slowly cut the throat of the nearest Bandit, which will alert the others. There seems to be a maximum of three dudes here and dispatching them is not always easy.

So save your game first with a Saviour Schnapps (which makes you a little drunk).

This particular dude was a motherfucker to beat, and it was close. If they have nice looking gear then you are in for a proper fight. Look at the image below, I have injuries to my Torso and Foot.

Kingdom Come_ Deliverance Royal Edition_20241119110805.jpg

If you manage to slay them, you will find 1-3 corpses full of goodies. Fill your pockets, become overloaded and walk back to Rattay, firstly equipping yourself with their soiled underwear and endure the stench.

You can get up to 200 Groschen if lucky using this method. If the Bandit has a helm and shield then more, but he might just kick your arse. It got me started and is a medium jog from the Millers farm where your handy bed is.

Kingdom Come_ Deliverance Royal Edition_20241119111728.jpg

On this occasion there was just one dude, but I netted over 500 Groschen. Handy when you need some spare cash. I think the difficulty of these bandits may scale with your level and skills.

Kingdom Come_ Deliverance Royal Edition_20241116134245.jpg
...'Miller Peshek does train you in Lockpicking and Pickpocketing, always good skills to have, especially the former'...

The Miller happens to be a fence, so steal that ring he wants you to do as a job and he will let you sleep for free, otherwise the bastard keeps waking you up when you bed down.

Kingdom Come_ Deliverance Royal Edition_20241119103041.jpg

Little is free in Kingdom Come Deliverance, besides the Soup. Eat, but don't overeat or you will get the 'Piggy' icon.

...To Be Continued... maybe...

Fair play for sticking with it! I ran out of patience with it at the weapons training part, was just too damn janky. Love the concept though and the sequel should be a lot more polished. Might end up going back to it as I'm sure it's the same story arc.

was just too damn janky.

I know what you mean, I am still a novice at fighting. When your sword is (8), things get a little slower (for you).. and you have time to block better. There's a lot of perks that make it easier. Lockpicking was awful to start with, but I can do it now. You have to train.. a lot.

Sounds like it could be worth putting the time in. I believe Dying Light 2 gets added to the PS Extra subscription today so that is first on my list. The first one was immense! Good example of first person melee combat too. Enjoy your gaming dude!

Oh wow. It's a first person one!! I might give it a whirl!!! Looks like the kind of game I usually love

I did think of you, knowing you prefer 1st person. The trick is to persevere, esp. with Combat and Lockpicking .. the latter is really tough to start but now I can do it almost every time.

Cex sell it for about £12, I figure it's going to be a cult one in time..., you love it or hate it.

It does sound right up my street. If it's first person I am usually sold and I love all the tough bits. Will try and pick it up before Christmas! A holiday treat

If it keeps my interest, I will write up a second journal. There is a lot to tell. I think the first run through I found the Cumans (bad guys) so bloody hard I gave up.

This time, it was several sparring sessions with the Captain before I did that main quest.., and they fell easily.

I played an expansion to Skyrim once that was like that, the difficulty was so amped up that i had to put it down and come back to it some time later.

I will keep all your tips in mind!

Yes, try it!!!

I will, I m on the hunt for something new!

Awesome, I was watching a video on YouTube that talked about the top fantasy games and this one came up, I looked and it was available on xbox game pass, I went in with low expectations and quickly got hooked. Just keep in mind the fighting takes some practice, make sure to go to the practice area and spar with the teacher dude, it will advance your skills and make it easier.

Oh is it on Game PAss! Even better, I never thought to check but will have a look tonight

Sounds like fun love a Skyrim type game!

The number of games I ditch these days isn't funny. They are all far too easy, and this is a little different. Not AAA, its clunky but rewarding.. the prose and story is great considering the developers are from Eastern Europe.

I find myself reading the text in the quests, as it's interesting... I also die a lot, as combat is really tough.

Very interesting. This kind of reminds me of the Might and Magic series. Only because it was so customizable and I ended up getting so engrossed in it. I can understand where you are coming from. I have just started playing Halflife 2 again because it was free to download over the weekend. I don't have any consoles, so I am restricted to PC games.

Having played many a M&M, I can say it's not like those at all. This is more real-life stuff, no magic, just medieval combat.

Its on the PC, so accessible to you. Very hard start, but you need to train your skills before trying things.

I meant how addictive it is, not the playstyle. I still play the M&M games to this day. I recently downloaded the package of all the games on GoG. I'll have to see if it fits into my budget. I don't like spending a ton on games.

I never played it, but I remember that when it got released it got some nice reviews and was well received by the critic and the public. There's also a sequel which is scheduled to be released in a few months :)

There's also a sequel which is scheduled to be released in a few months

February 2025, but where's it going to start? If it's a '2' then Henry should have some skills already. There's little info about this as yet.

Maybe the game will have a completely new main character? Or it's already confirmed that it will be Henry again?

It is Henry.

Well, in that case I guess something very bad is going to happen to that poor guy 🤣

It's been awhile I never player first person shooter game. Combat sword 🗡️ fights it's my thing. I'm gonna find a game on Android see if I can get similar game hehe 😅

I was never one for phone and tablet games, the screens are too small. I did like the PS Vita, but that's resigned to memories now.

That's true screen are small indeed. I'm into playstation but due to work I'm stuck with mobile games usually one or two days uninstall due to no time haha 😂. PS Vita was amazing at the time but yeah I can't seem to remember what I played in PS Vita long time ago I guess.

I loved this game so much!! But I may have said quite a few swear words at the beginning before I learned the combat system lol. I can't wait for the second one!!

I still am swearing at the combat. There are no guarantees when you enter a fight and I am nowhere near mastering it.

I know right?? I spend lots of time in the training arena with that one dude, I forget his name, it helps your skill dramatically. And there is one move that once you master it will take out foes super easy. It is a timing thing, it's been awhile since I played but if I remember it is a block then a quick strike or something like that. Also switching weapons is super helpful, blunt weapons on heavily armored is much better than the sword.

The Perfect Block, you have to be very sharp though to pull it off. I can crack Captain Bernard at times with it heh..

That combat system sounds quite punishing. I read some other reviews when it came out. Most of them said it is hard to master but quite rewarding as you learn stuff.

This seems to work every few days, even though the next lot of Bandits will see a pile of corpses piled up from your last lot of work.

Bandits be like, completely normal day of work, nothing out of the ordinary so far...lol

Medieval Fallout?

Hardly, Fallout games are a lot more polished than this. It's coffee drinking at Mrs Smiths' cafe and not Starbucks.

Independent and different.

Well it will keep you going through the winter I guess, I can't find anything worth playing at the moment

I know what you mean. The number I go through and ditch due to boredom.

yup, have even not bothered to pay annual sub to ps+ as the games are shite, I hate online co-op gaming and that seems to be the way for newer games. even as. creed is too samey

image.png

Love that numbers! 😁

Definitely a game that seems to be a strategy game, with horses and archers might be to my liking... I don't have the time or a proper setup to play it, but who knows one day...

Ah, it's not strategy? 😖

Hahahaha... well anyway, I like the way it looks. And we have soup, one of my favourite foods.

😄

Such a good game, awesome showcase man. Honestly the best game I’ve played on GoG

I never played Kingdom Come Deliverance but happy to read a new post from you! Although I feel quite ashamed for having no idea you are a gamer too! 🙃

FPS? Outside Hive?

Regular game, crypto games are all about money.
