By 2016 id Software went on sale Doom, a reboot of one of the most endearing video game sagas of first-person action games. Doom a shooter that came to the top bringing the essence of its first releases but adapting and evolving them to the times that run today to offer us some of the best first-person shooter of the previous decade.
After four years of the release of Doom, Doom Etenal came to our hands, a direct sequel to the 2016 game that improves everything we saw in its previous installment, giving us, in my opinion, the best shooter of recent times .
When we decide to press the play button and start our adventures through Doom Eternal we realize that it is a frenetic, wild and fun game, much more than the previous installment, keeping us completely glued to the screen shooting and dodging the demons that we will have to annihilate, so that when we finish the confrontation we will realize all the chaos we have created.
In Doom Eternal you will explore the maps, opening up, walk until you reach a certain area and start a new massacre by hitting, shooting, setting fire and cutting your enemies. To achieve all this frenzy of madness we must know certain mechanics that will be, if not useful, essential to end the demons that cross our path.
And I could say that this game is based on three pillars, the executions, mechanics that will be seen in the enemies at a certain moment and that we can do in three different ways. Each enemy has different weak points that we must attack in order to carry out the executions.
We have normal executions that help us recover life when we kill a demon, if we execute it with the chainsaw we recover ammunition and if we burn them with the flamethrower they will release us a shield. Varying between each of these alternatives according to the need of the moment will be a key point if we want to survive the hell that Doom Eternal offers us.
We will have a total of 9 different weapons to use in all the madness that Doom Eternal offers us, we will have from the "classic" shotgun to a heavy barrel and even a plasma rifle and other various tools that we will unlock as we progress through the game. Each of the different weapons will serve us with certain enemies, so it is important to alternate between them to survive in each scenario; This is an excellent method to take each game out of his comfort zone and force him to adapt to the weapon that the situation requires.
The weapons will have different modifications that we will unlock in the course of the game, allowing us special powers that will be in combat. Although at the beginning all the information that the game gives you is overwhelming, little by little we will realize that these modifications are really useful and provide more frenzy to the gameplay.
Apart from the 9 armed forces, we will have two types of grenades, the life-long grenade that explodes killing our enemies and a second that will freeze them when it explodes, in this way we can one or the other as required by the situations that we find ourselves and whatever our way of playing.
Another important aspect that we will handle is movement. Knowing how to move in Doom Eternal is essential if we want to complete the game, not because you need great agility to dodge the blows and shots from our enemies, but because we also find some sections of platforms that will serve to move from one stage to another and rest of the exorbitant wave of demons that await us.
In the movement mechanics we will have a double jump and a run or days, which will allow us to move forward, backward or sideways in an instant. Like everything we have seen, mastering each of the Doom Eternal mechanics will be essential for our adventure.
Doom Eternal has 4 difficulty modes that do not affect the number of enemies shown on the screen or change the speed of their attacks, they only limit themselves to slightly increasing the damage they inflict on us and the use of their most powerful abilities.
An important part of a good shooter is the setting, and in Doom Eternal both the gameplay and the artistic level shine for themselves. We will find scenarios that take advantage of the platform apart and that are well set in the Doom theme. Each scenario is well designed, with hidden sections that we will have to find to improve our character and treasures that will force us to replay it in order to find them.
With so much neatness at the gameplay level, it is almost impossible to stop thinking that the story does not meet the expectations necessary to create a balance between gameplay and story, otherwise with Doom Eternal. The narrative is more present in this installment of the saga, as we advance, different characters will tell us in a summarized way the story, everything that happens with the demonic invasion and other things. We can also find codices that will allow us to delve a little deeper into history on our own.
Obviously all this frenzy that Doom Eternal gives off is well accompanied by an impeccable sound work, the audio of the weapons, the blows or the scenarios are well recreated and accompany the theme of the game. The soundtrack is impeccable, by Mark Gordon who knows how to convey the intensity and ferocity of the moment, making Doom Eternal a whole festival.
Developing a first-person game as good as Doom Eternal can be done, but overcoming it is very difficult. Doom Eternal improving everything we saw in its previous installment and adding new things, came with an abysmal advantage on the table. This game should serve as an example for other developers of how to create a game with excellent mechanics and without neglecting the story, not focusing more on one than the other, but giving it a balance in gameplay and story.
I know I'm late for the Doom Eternal train but it's never too late to play gems like these that haven't been seen in a long time.
I think it looks amazing, it looks like a good game and I've seen it before and with your review I think it can be a very relevant game for me since I like this style of game. Cheers bro!
Thank you bro for reading the review. If you like this type of game, I recommend that you first try Doom 2016 and then this one so that you notice the improvements and enjoy it more.
And take a look at Wolfenstein for sure you'll like it too :)
