I love random shots, personally. Especially early in the game when not everyone has hunkered down for a bit and had time to find great armor or weapons. Not so great a tactic later in the game when it is often seasoned players left.
The landing zone is another that many don't believe holds much value as a tactic. Sadly, it holds a lot. As you know, if handled correctly, picking a good landing zone can mean seeing the top 5 or being in the bottom five.
There are times I will intentionally pick a hot area to land. This is usually dictated by the availability of one building in particular. It is always full of supplies and weapons and at least one piece of level 2 armor early in the game.
If I know the town well enough to land near this building I will go there regardless of others landing. I don't stick around though. I get in, scavenge once and get out with what I can and wait for the inevitable gunfights to die down. Then if time permits, such as being well into the safe zone, I will venture into town again and attempt to clear the survivors out. This tactic has a 75% success rate as often the final people in that area usually get cocky or impatient and run loosy goody around making easy targets if you are patient.
