In Tower of Boin from Nenokuni Studio and Shady Corner Games, the studious Elf Knight Lufia has a problem, and being the honorable and selfless knight that she is, it's her duty to fix it. The only problem with that however, is that Lufia and every other woman in the Imperial City has been cursed with oversized and unruly breasts after the appearance of a mysterious tower in the outskirts of her realm. So unruly in fact that she can no longer wear her armor that would protect her on her journey to right this wrong. It also doesn’t help that she can barely move except for maybe a hop, skip, and bounce using the momentum of her new found counterweights. But adversity is the path to greatness, and when life gives you melons, you just gotta squash each and every baddy along your climb to the top.
The gameplay in Tower of Boin is supported by sex and sexual themes, but at no point is it interactive nor is it an integral part to the gameplay loop. The scenes depicted however do feature full nudity, as well as partially visible or implied penetration. Persistent nudity during gameplay is also present, since Lufia is always topless, even when not within a designated sex scene.
All scenes in Tower of Boin feature sex or sexual acts between non-human or demi-human partners, and can depict acts of tentacle play as well as impregnation. For example, when the frog monster lays its eggs inside Lufia’s body. There is also a scene where the mimic monster eats Lufia whole, but that’s less sexual and more just what mimics do. That said all acts performed with or to Lufia could be considered non-consensual since at no point does she seem to agree with what’s happening to her.
Something you don’t see very often in the adult gaming space are simple, casual games that exude charm. Which is too bad because if we had more of that, then maybe more people would feel less icky about dipping their toes into the erotic corner of this wonderful hobby. When I ran across Tower of Boin however, it was its charms and its simple concept that won me over. Sure, the main character was constantly topless, but it had such fun and colorful graphics that I couldn’t help but want to try it out. So, when we got the chance to play it prior to its release, there was no hesitation. Plus, I was curious to see how the game would play, how the naughty bits would be incorporated, and if my expectations would be met.
Right off the bat, it’s apparent that Tower of Boin’s charms really do make it shine, and it’s not just its cute graphics, but also its wonderfully retro soundtrack, and how it tries to justify the fact that Lufia (the main character) is always without a top waving her big boisterous moon balloons around. Not that a lewd game really needs to justify that type of thing, since you know, that’s just par for the course, but I appreciate that there was some thought behind the events that lead to her situation, and that’s what counts. Of course, this being an erotic game, things do get a bit more spicy once you encounter a sex scene, but especially then, the graphics really shine with even more detailed and impressive pixel art!
When it comes to the gameplay, I did struggle a bit with the controls. They felt a bit unresponsive, but that was mostly due to how movement worked and how you could only move forward while in the air after a jump. But that isn’t really much of a complaint since it only took me a minute or two to get used to it. Which is good because you can beat the game in less than 3, at least on the normal difficulty and maybe 5 or 6 on the hardest. For the most part that’s because the game is quite simple in concept. You’ll find yourself jumping from platform to platform as you climb the tower, with there being a set amount of steps required to reach the top depending on the difficulty you select. You can also collect coins or gems, as well as stomp on the enemies that stand in your way to increase your score. If you stand on a platform for too long though, or miss it all together, you’ll fall to your doom. Your game will also end if you fail to kill an enemy, and it happens to capture you when your life points reach zero. That’s typically where you’ll be rewarded with a game over sex scene. None of it was particularly challenging, but I did enjoy that it made you think on your toes as you progressed through a stage. Unless of course you’re trying to fail just so you can get to the naughty bits. Guilty as charged!
All in all, I really enjoyed my time with Tower of Boin, even if it was a short amount. I really dug its simplicity and its pick up and play nature that encourages you to chase those leaderboards to see if you can get the best times or score. So, if you’re looking for something that doesn’t really challenge you, but lays on the charm and spices it up with a little naughty biz, then I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Honestly, my only real wish is that there was more of it! More monsters, more stages, and more challenges, because more of a good thing is never bad.
Tower of Boin may lure you in with its sensualities, but it hooks you with its charm, cheekiness, and its simplistic pick up and play mechanics. Two melony thumbs UP from us!!
