With the Exode Alpha Booster Sale on Hive ending Tuesday I wanted to remind people I have a referral link post an article I’ve been meaning to write for a while.
Most of my articles have been “how to” focused and aimed at newer players. This one is aimed more at existing players, to act as a reference for an often overlooked aspect of the game - character backgrounds.
If you are new to Exode, I recommend checking starting with my other “How to Exode” posts such as How to Exode: Evacuation first. I even have a sample evacuation game play video you can check out here.
If you don’t yet have a starter deck, and buy them with my referral link, we will both get two free account bound boosters. If I get another 5 referrals, everyone who I have previously (and in the future) will also receive an account bound Epic Officer card automatically!
If you plan on buying boosters though, you want to act fast. Alpha boosters will no longer be available in the game shop as of Tuesday 7PM UTC. You will need to either buy them during the upcoming WAX sale (for $3.49 instead of $3) or off the secondary market (currently $4.50).
Backgrounds
Every character has a randomly generated background. Each background comes with its own set of flaws or benefits. Additionally, not all backgrounds are likely to get along, making life in the colony “more interesting”. To further diversity your crew, you can get sub backgrounds as well.
Note: I’m pretty sure some backgrounds will be hard coded in the future, but at the moment it does not always seem to be the case.
These are all the backgrounds I have discovered so far. I do not know if it is an exhaustive list, but I’ve been fairly thoroughly spamming Crew Registration to find as many as I can. If you know of any I missed, please let me know in the comments!
Achean Gangs
In Alpha there is only one Achean specific card, the Achean Racer.
Clynost
I am looking forward to seeing what sort of implants will be included in Beta and Beyond!
Corporate Worlds
There are currently 5 corporate faction cards available, though one of the Beta Contracts is rumored to be corporate themed.
Drachian
There are currently 5 Drachian themed cards and we know they will have a legacy rewards path in the future. They are currently one of my favorites, and I'm glad to see they got more description than any other faction I've seen!
Federal Colonies
First Colonies [Europa]
First Colonies [Mars]
Genetician
The Geneticians are the only primary background which can be given to an entire crew with a single card. There are only 3 Genetician cards currently, but there will be a legacy reward path for them in the future.
Linovian Elite
Nomad Fleet
There are currently two Nomad fleet cards, and I believe they are supposed to have a legacy reward path in the future as well.
Old Earth [Terran]
Persean
Psionic Academist
I was very excited when I first rolled one of these! That should be interesting to play!
Robot
Shim
Solmen
This is one background I never like to roll. They know what they are doing, but I wouldn't be surprised if they sparked a rebellion!
Spaceborn
Suntek
The Suntek are are faction I know very little about. The Suntek Collector was a reward for the very early backers. I have not rolled any while using The Columbus and can't use the Arkhen Cannon without a Suntek origin. My personal bet is we'll see either a Suntek starter in beta or an origin.
Templar
Triskan Survivor
We know of the Triskan Survivors from the Triskan Fighter and Scarlet Sarah. The survivors promise to be very useful on difficult planets and I look forward to seeing more of this faction.
Underworld
Factions / Sub Backgrounds
We are much more familiar with these than a lot of the backgrounds. Several of them can be easily added to any character. These factions further supplement a characters background and some of them are very common. You can only have one faction on top of your background.
Criminal
There are criminals everywhere, including the Repentant Pirate origin, Captain Cranium (who turns your entire crew criminal), and the Syndicate (who have a chip which can turn anyone criminal).
Federal
I was surprised there were only 6 Federation cards based on how often I see this faction. Apparently my crew choices favor the Federation.
Flesh Cult
I admit, I'm excited to see how the Flesh Cult plays out. It should be fairly easy to end up with a flesh cult colony, and the citizens will undoubtedly be fairly happy, but I have no clue what to expect. There are currently three cards for this faction.
Rebel
Though the Rebels only have 3 cards currently, one of those is really high in demand, The Rebellion Secrets. It is safe to assume we will see more Rebels in the future.
Syndicate
The Syndicate is the final faction. In addition to multiple characters and a ship, you can make ANY character syndicate through the use of a chip. Even though they dropped solely through limited contracts I expect we'll see a lot of syndicate use in the future.
Those are all the backgrounds and factions I know of currently. If I'm missing any, or any info is incorrect, please let me know and I'll add/fix it ASAP!
Thanks for taking the time to read this. If you haven't already signed up please use my referral link so we can both benefit!
I can't wait for the next update around Colonization coming this month!
The more I read about Exode the more it seems like a quality project. What's the time commitment in this game like?
It's definitely a quality project, especially considering it's a single dev.
Running an evacuation takes about 15 minutes. Then it's another 15 minutes to land on a planet and initiate colonization/find a planet.
Colonization itself is a bit of a mystery, but my impression was you could get by checking once a day.
To get anything marketable will take longer as you need to fully explore a planet before it can be sold, or bring a person to 100 percent happiness, or invent something new (complete mystery at this point). We don't know the duration at this point, whether it's days, weeks, or longer
Your cards get locked to an evacuation so your collection will determine how many you can run in parallel. You can run one per origin you own.
One key impression I have is it's a game first and play to earn second. It's deliberately being designed to rely on choices as opposed to mindlessly grinding.
Hope this (rather long typed on cell phone reply) helps!
It sure did!
Nice compilation!
I have a Psionic Stug in my test planet crew, I'm exited to see how it will evolve :D (actually I have a bunch of weird origin in my test planet crew)
I admit, I have no idea what my currently landed crew looks like. I just know they were all alive and my ship is relatively intact (before my inevitable crash landing).
Let us know what happens with your colony! It sounds like it'll be fun :)

Check out the last post from @hivebuzz:
Nice overview of the factions/backgrounds! Clynosts sound very interesting for their use of implants. I don't think I've ever rolled that background. I'm thinking they could go well with a scientific/genetician crew (plus a magna cultist) and some Chips and Data. I don't have the nomad navigator but I once rolled nomad as someone's background. I think you forgot to mention them!
Thanks!
They definitely seem interesting. Either I am very unlucky or they are a very rare background (or have a special condition needed to be chosen)
Nomad Fleet was included! I even mentioned the two cards but I didn't go into much detail because I don't know much about them yet!

Yo, so if I feel like trying out the game, are the alpha booster packs and where would I get them?
Sorry for the delay in replying.
The alpha boosters are now sold out. The only way to get them is on the secondary market which is available after you buy a starter deck, through referral bonuses, or in the eventual (very limited) wax sale in the future.
To get one of the starters and gain access, you can follow my referral link in the post. Once you get to the exode site if you click where it says "game status early alpha" it will bring up the shop interface.
Using a referral link to buy a starter gets you two account bound alpha boosters
Hope that helps. Sorry if I'm unclear, I'm on my cell phone.
