Hello! It's my first post in the Eating Out community!
I was actually brought here by @shawnnft. It all began with his invitation to join his January 2025 Eating Out Challenge, which you can read all about it here, and just when I thought of some interesting food to share, I realised I actually ate them on 31 Dec. So this means they are not eligible for the challenge.
And we went down a spiral of chats on this mysterious meal I had on 31 Dec. So here I am, trying this out as a warm up, to share about one of the nicer but also more expensive meals that I had to kind of celebrate the end of 2024.
So my friend and I were thinking of what to eat for lunch on New Year's Eve and I thought why not go to Jewel Changi Airport, which is the mall at our airport, simply because there are so many food options there and surely we can find something. And I also had a craving for some yummy gelato as well!
We finally settled on Tanuki Raw. It's somewhat of a fancy restaurant that sit atop the mall and since I haven't tried it before, I thought why not give it a try? Here's the Google Review location/rating.
For starters, we had Fries with Fried Chicken and Bacon because we saw a "Recommended" symbol on the menu. This cost SGD 16.90 before taxes, and around SGD 22 after taxes (which is about USD 16). The fries were nice, and the chicken and bacon was tasty, but my friend and I both felt that the price was a little too steep for this dish. We were expecting a bigger serving or perhaps more meat.
For our mains, we ordered two. The first one was Mentaiko Salmon Don. This is more of a Japanese cuisine, where Mentaiko is a type sauce that goes well with Salmon. And Don means rice. As expected, given a fish/seafood dish in a fancy restaurant, this cost all in around SGD 30 (USD 22). Aside from the price, which I thought was still within a reasonable range considering the location and ambience, I quite enjoyed the bowl of salmon rice.
The second main was something special. Since such occasions were very rare, I thought of trying something exotic from the menu and I saw this Snow Crab and Avocado Burger. That stood out from the typical "Chicken" and "Pork" burgers on the menu. I am personally not a fan of crab but I thought the combination of snow crab meat and avocado spread blended well together. To be honest, the taste was quite refreshing, largely thanks to the avocado. As for the cost, drum rolls, this came up to about SGD 36 (USD 26). I can't remember when was the last time I had such an expensive burger, but it's New Year's Eve, and it's always nice to enjoy new experiences once in a while.
Overall, I enjoyed the ambience and my favourite dish had to be the Snow Crab and Avocado Burger. But I wouldn't order the fries because it's not really worth the price, maybe just a plain bowl of fries would suffice. It was surely an expensive meal, but I don't eat this often, so that's ok. Lol.
After an expensive lunch, I still had room for desserts (of course!) and it was time to head to one of my favourite gelato shops, called Birds of Paradise! They actually made it to the list of Michelin Guide - I couldn't believe a gelato shop can make it too but it's real!
This wasn't my first time here, but fortunately, the queue was much shorter than my previous visits. I think I queued for about 5 to 10 minutes and it was my turn. I ordered a Double scoop with Sea Salt Hojicha and Pandan Coconut Caramel flavours. I was actually hoping they had a Matcha flavour but they didn't, so Hojicha would be the closest match.
As expected, the flavours were so rich and I enjoyed both flavours so much! If I had to pick the better one, it would be Pandan Coconut Caramel. It's actually 3 different things combined together, and I could taste each individual component, and it was a flavourful experience.
Did I also mention that their cones tasted very special and different from the ones in typical gelato shop? There was an unique herb taste and scent when I munched on it, and so I went to did some searching. Based on Google, their cones are house-made and infused by thyme! There you have it!
Finally, the price was about SGD 10 (USD 7) for double scoop, and I thought it was reasonable for its quality. Maybe I am also biased because I have a sweet tooth! Hehe!
Alright, that's all I have, for one of my last meals of 2024! Thanks for reading and let me know if you found this interesting too!
In case anyone is wondering, this sharing is not sponsored in any way.

Hmm I would never put avocado in a burger but now I’m intrigued that it turned out to be your fave 😁
The fries with bacon looks so nice. That’s something that would order too.
