It started off chilly this week in my area in Germany, but the second half brought some wonderfully warm days. So happy about that!
Last winter to spring, I lost quite a few spring bulbs after planting them too early and in a spot where they got too much rain. But the ones I planted last year seem to be doing well. I was a bit worried when they started sprouting during the colder months, but now it looks like they’ll make it through to spring just fine. What a relief.
The plants that overwintered on the balcony are still growing slowly, but I can see some changes. I noticed new buds on the currant bush, which got me thinking — should I enjoy the fruit on the balcony this spring and move the plant to the garden afterward? Or should I relocate it earlier in the season? Decisions, decisions.
As I wanted to add some more color to the balcony, I picked up a few violas at the market. At just 80 cents a pot — thank you, plant shop! Viola flowers also look lovely in salads, and they’re perfect for this season. I’m planning to plant some leafy greens among them soon, which should work well for summer salads and sandwiches.
The broad beans and shiso seedlings I had kept indoors have now moved outside. I’ve removed the tray covers to give them some sunlight. In about a month, there’s a local plant market where I’m hoping to sell shiso seeds, seedlings, and shiso syrup. Fingers crossed the seedlings grow big enough in time!
While moving the seedlings, I started thinking about building a small greenhouse. We still have cold days until mid May. I had originally planned to hang a plastic sheet, but I remembered that I’d picked up a discounted shelf cover that was too long for the shelf. It’s a bit long since it’s made for a tall shelf, but I decided to work with it by adding some extra supports.
And here’s the finished setup with the cover in place.
I’ve placed it on the balcony. It’s very much a DIY project, and it does block the view a bit — but it’s functional … at least 😅 I’ll only need it for about two months, until mid-May, so it should be fine. I’m planning to start sowing my favorite summer vegetables next week and will see how it works.
This weekend, I’m in Paris and had the chance to visit a plant market. They had so beautiful mimosa trees — I was very tempted to buy one, but when I lifted it, it was heavier than I thought that I decided to wait. Hopefully, I’ll find one at my local market in May.

ドイツは週前半は寒かったのですが、後半は暖かい日が続いています。うれしすぎる！
一昨年は雨の当たる場所に早い時期に浅く植えてしまい春の花の球根をかなりダメにしてしまいましたが、昨年植えた分は元気に育っているようです。まだ寒い時期に芽が出てしまった時にはひやっとしましたが、ここまで来たら無事春を迎えられそうです。よかった。
バルコニーで越冬した植物は相変わらずスローですが、ちょっとずつ変化が出ています。カラントの木に新芽が出ているのを見つけ、この春バルコニーで実を楽しんで、そのあと庭に移すのがいいかな、それとも春先に移してしまおうかな・・・迷います。
バルコニーにもう少し色味があるといいなと思い、マーケットでビオラを買ってきました。一鉢80セントだなんて、植木屋さんありがとう。ビオラはサラダにのせてもきれいで、この季節におすすめです。近々ビオラの間に春夏にサラダやサンドイッチに使う葉物も植えたいです。
家の中に退避させていたそら豆と紫蘇の苗も外に出してトレイのカバーを外して太陽光に当てています。あと一ヶ月ほどで私も久しぶりに出店する地域の植物市です。紫蘇は、種、苗、紫蘇シロップを売りたくて、苗がある程度の大きさに育ってくれることを願っています。
苗を外に出しながら、グリーンハウスがあったらなあと思い、冬に自分で作ってみようと考えていたことを思い出しました。当初、ビニールシートを吊ろうと思ったのですが、棚を買った時に長さが合わないカバーが安売りされていたので、一緒に買ったのを思い出して、これを使うことに。このカバーは背の高い棚用なので長いんですよね・・・。棚に支柱を取り付けて、カバーの長さにしました😂

バルコニーに置いてみました。手作り感満載ですが、やや視界を遮りますが、実用的にはOKです。カバーを使うのは5月半ばまでの2ヵ月ほどなのでよしとしましょう。来週から大好きな夏野菜の種をまき始めるので、このスペースを活用したいです。室内よりも日がよく当たるので、がっしりした苗が育つのに期待したいです。
今週末はパリに来ていて、植物のマーケットを見てきました。大好きなミモザの木がたくさん売られていて危うく買いそうになりましたが、持ち上げるとかなりの重量で我慢我慢。5月にある今住んでいる町のマーケットで見つかったらいいな。
