The last few days I haven't been doing much with my plants, but today wanted to check on our little pea plant seedlings. They are doing so well climbing up the little runners I placed for them. I'm hoping they'll be able to reach the trellis soon and then explode with flowers. I can't wait. They are approximately 12cm tall now so they still have a way to go. LL is so looking forward to being able to eat the peas directly off the vines.
Our tomato plant has also shot up and is looking great, perhaps it's enjoying the autumn temperatures and higher rainfall. The chestnut tree is shedding more and more leaves every day, littering the lawn with orange and brown. I don't mind at all and I'll rake up the leaves and add it to the base of the tree as a mulch layer to keep the roots warm as the temperatures drop. Along with the autumn leaves, we've been treated to such gorgeous sunsets in the same tones. Those pinks, reds, yellows and oranges never cease to take my breath away, I don't think I will ever get sick of seeing these skies.
The other exciting thing that we learned recently is that this tree alongside the house is a Cherry Guava tree! I made my day by asking my sister if it was one because she didn't know that she even had one and then when I showed her the fruit and she tasted one, her eyes went wide and her whole face brightened.
The reason this is special and sentimental is that our mom really love Cherry Guavas. Her mother and grandmother grew them and made cherry guava jam. My mom grew one but it never got very big and it didn't produce very many guavas. My sister's tree is massive in comparison. I've never seen a Cherry Guava tree this size. It was covered in fruit, so much so that every morning for weeks it had been attracting Mousebirds that would congregate in the tree and have their fruity breakfast while striking up a conversation with each other.
It may seem trivial to some, but this small synchronicity was a wonderful gift to my sister.
I know that I missed the challenge but I'm often late to the party, I figure better late than never.
All images above are my own
It's great to capture those nimble birds in pictures like that. I've seen plenty of hummingbirds around the garden but I'm never quick enough to get a snap. Those Guavas look beautiful. They remind me of childhood days and bike rides. Looks like you have a green thumb! My only relationship with the garden is throwing the wood shavings in it. Oh, wait. I have a cactus. Maybe more like cacti since it has reproduced quite fast and its offspring are everywhere. 😂
Also, that sunset photo is a beauty!
Thanks for coming to have a look Andres.
Cacti count so there you go 😁 The guava was here before I got here so I can't take credit for that, but the tomato and peas seem to be happy.
Sunbirds really are very quick and I was just lucky that they were more interested in the flowers than my presence this time, often I get a photo of a tail feather or a wing and nothing else 🤣
Something akin to a cryptid! 😂
How exciting! Your garden is thriving, and looks lovely. I'm happy that I learned something new about the different varieties of guava as well, many thanks for that, @andrastia 😊
Annabelle
Thanks Annabelle
The little veggie box is very special to LL, she loves it. Talks to her plants every day. This morning she helped me put up another support stake with ropes for her pea seedling.
I hope you and Ben are fully recovered and have bounced back?
A bona-fide plant whisperer! How lovely 😍
Ben is nearly there in terms of recovery, I'm still a ways behind (sigh) One massively great thing is that I finally have my voice back.
In terms of gardens, we've been putting in some work on ours - here's a shot of ours:
Annabelle 😊
Hi Annabelle
Ooh that's beautiful having such lovely space! It looks wonderful. I'm so glad that you are both almost back to 100%, losing your voice must have been frustrating. Honey with everything will help your throat.
Sending hugs
🌼
Hugs readily accepted! Thank you, @andrastia!
A wonderful gift indeed! I've never seen one before. Are they yummy? We also have a bumper crop of southern double breasted sunbirds. Beautiful. They are finally back after years of drought. The long tailed Malachite sunbird returned a couple years ago but now more and more of the striking little sunbirds are finding their way home....
Hi Buckaroobaby
I can't remember what they taste like, last time I had one I was a kiddo. The birds get to all the ripe ones before we do.
The sunbirds are so sweet, I'm glad you get visited by the Malachites, they are sneaky birds - you ever tried to photograph one? I swear the second they see a camera they leave. It's awesome that yours are flocking back to you, they are wonderful pollinators too.
Let me answer that question with a link to one of my old posts.

Aw man what cool photos and awesome post, I am so sorry that I didn't see it 7 months ago, would have 100%ed it. Shame, so you didn't drape your linen over the nesting area to keep the flies out but how many babies survived?
I'm envious of those gorgeous photos, freaking beautiful!
So I need a nickname for you because I feel awkward typing out Buckaroobaby on each of our discussions, what can I call you? Is Buck too masculine? Seems too masculine
Very beautiful garden :)
Thanks Katerina
I hope you are keeping well of late.
You don't miss it really until I schedule - chances are I'm still trying to put it together. I understand teh sentiment about the guava - there's lots of plants I planat for sentiment! You're going into Autumn now too - truly it's a special time. Only second to Spring. And summer. And winter. Who am I kidding - I love life, and gardens, and seasons! And sunsets too, of course!
Hi River
Ah ok, I saw that it was closed but figured that I'd still put it in even so 🙂
I absolutely know what you mean, having plants for sentiment is kinda cool I think and as it grows so does the sentiment. I once was given an impatiens pot plant for that same reason 🤣 do you think they were trying to tell me something?
Hope you have a wonderful day
