Welcoming a newbie to the family

in HiveGarden2 years ago
A little while ago LL and I had a pineapple and I let her break off the top on the edge of the kitchen counter. Yes, that's how we do it in this family because we're both small lol. I put it into water on the off-chance that it may root and placed it in the windowsill of the kitchen.

To be honest, I only checked on it every now and then but it was still green, so I let it do it's thing, occassionally just topping up it's water.

My excitement shot up sky high when I had a peak a couple weeks back and saw that it had started rooting. With time and patience (I'm not a very patient person) I let the roots get a bitty bigger and yesterday I decided it was time to get those babies into some soil.

With care I removed all of the leaves from the base that had died off. I know, I know, you're supposed to do that before putting it into water. I know that now. Perhaps that stunted it's root growth, I'm not sure, but there seem to be loads of extra little root nodules that are now exposed so I'm hoping they will now GROW LIKE MAD!

I luckily had a few pots here and decided to put it in the one that was originally home to our Apple tree. Like pass me down clothing from distant cousins lol. It's the first pineapple that has rooted for me and so I sent it off to it's new little home with some dandelion wishes.

Welcome to the family little pineapple!

Peas

Our little pea plant is no longer so little (about 60cm tall now) and has put out a huge spray of beautiful, delicate flowers. I love visiting them when they're covered in dew. Even a few peas are appearing. It doesn't seem to like the trellis that I put up for it all that much, but it's hanging in there with a LOT of tendrils and tenacity.

Weeding

I did some weeding of the most obnoxious daisy called Arctotheca calendula which is very pretty when it flowers but it sends out stolons under the soil and then pops up another plant and another and another and so on and so forth. Using this vegetative reproduction, it creates these dense mats that the grass doesn't seem to like very much. I ripped it all out. Three black bin bags full of the stuff, then raked up all the tree leaves and cut the grass. The new lawnmower blade is FANTASTIC.

Strawberries

I couldn't believe my eyes when I found the first little strawberry flowers in LL's planter box. All shy and subdued under the shelter of the leaves. I whispered sweet nothings to them and promised I'll keep the snails away. I know LL will love to pop that first homegrown strawberry in her mouth!

Unexpectedly resilient

The thing that really made me tear up was when I found an onion that had sprouted almost a year ago (by accident) that I had secretly planted in the back garden bed. It vanished for a good while but it has now made two little onion plants. They had been uprooted (probably by one of my furbabies), so I lovingly placed them back in the soil to do their thing. They're looking a bit worse for wear but I think they'll pull through.

That's what's been potting in June here, hope your month was awesome too and full of growth 🌱.

Hi Andy,
This is awesome!
It will be interesting to see how that pineapple grows.
I'm not so surprised about the onion though. I found an onion that sprouted underneath my kitchen cupboard by complete accident. I could have probably put it in some soil and tried to grow it, but I got busy and never got around to doing it.
My herbs were doing well, until some weed found it's way to one of the pots and I lost my rocket without even harvesting any.☹️
Good luck with all of them and strawberries are always a treat. If the pineapple does well, maybe I'll try to plant one next time I go back to Jamaica:)))

Hi Milly

How you doing?

Pineapple plants are really interesting and look kinda alien, I am hoping I can keep it alive to see it put out fruit. I'm sure that pineapples grow really well in Jamaica, it's quite tropical there isn't it? My geography is pathetic 🤣

Oh that little rascal run away onion! Very naughty hiding like that. I also forget things and then the next time I look, all the onions and potatoes are full of shoots and I feel too guilty to chop them up any of them.

I'm so sorry to read about your rocket, that sucks. Try, try and try again. I had a lot of success in England growing Thyme and Oregano on the window ledge, they are hardier than rocket, so much longer lasting.

Hope you are keeping well. 🌼

I'm doing well. Been busy with a few appointments lately and have been navigating my way on foot through unknown routes to fetch the bus, it feels strange but it's good for me... Another early morning out tomorrow, but at least I know exactly where I'm going now.

Jamaica is as tropical and humid as it gets, but some parishes are known for particular fruits and pineapple is not popular in my parish. I first saw pineapples growing on trees by the sea in the Philippines and they were so attractive.

Yeah, my rockets were doing so well then they turn red and were taken over with weed, so I will get more seeds. My thyme is still slow but the oregano survived winter and is still going strong.

I hope you're doing well too:)... and maybe you'll get to have some peas an berries long before your pineapple plant develops 💐

I'm (unofficially) naming your pineapple, Eugeneia which is an ancient Greek name which means well born because I think this pineapple is indeed, well born...and lucky to have a nurturing pineapple mother like you.

Thanks Becca, that's a great name for her. I gave her a little ladybird friend today who later invited over one of her buddies, so I think they're enjoying their new home very much. Thank you for naming her 🍍

Everyone needs a name, and a little buddy.

I never knew it is possible to regrow a pineapple plant like that! This world is full of surprises.

Hi Sascha

Thanks for reading my post. It's crazy how cool the plant world is once you get immersed in it. I've tried to root them so many times before and they always rotted, this one is a fighter, I hope it grows into a big bush tree thing one day.

Hope you've been well. Still travelling lots?

I am very interested join your family

Four or five years ago I did that with a pineapple. It's had it's ups and downs, living here, but this is what it looks like now:

Oh wow, that's so cool! They are lovely plants, I've always wanted to try get one to grow and yours looks really happy. Has it ever flowered?

Not yet, but then care around here is less than optimal....

I have such a weird suspicion when it comes to plants though. When you baby them, they don't grow. Leave them alone and forget about them for a few weeks and it's almost as if they will take over a windowsill so that you will come to see what's going on...your pineapple seems very happy and bright and cheerful so I think it gets more care than you're giving yourself credit for 😉
