Garden Journal April ~ ‘Sweet April showers do bring May flowers’

in HiveGarden2 years ago (edited)

March was a busy month, filled with garden works.
Cleaning the fields from weeds, planting seeds and preparing for the summer crops.

The seedlings in the glasshouse are growing very well. They are lucky to be born in a warm bed of soil inside.
I planted many varieties of tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, peppers and many more different types of vegetables that I cannot remember it even while I am writing.

Also in the garden many plants starting to sprout and to grow. Seeds from the flowers of last year starting to sprout. There are so many, it is a good way to share with friends and neighbors.

The arugula is flowering, it attracts many bees. My favorite type of salad. Soon, when the flowers are finished, I can harvest the seeds for the next growing season.

So lovely to see how all get alive again after the winter sleep. Although we are expecting cold temperatures the coming week, all is getting alive and the days are getting longer.

The broad beans have their first flowers, now it doesn’t take much longer before we see them growing.

Also I have planted other kinds of beans, direct in the soil, no sign of sprouting yet, hopefully that will come quick.

The sweet peas are growing very well, hopefully a big harvest this year.

Strawberries are flowering and even little strawberries are on it. End of the month we will have many fresh strawberries. I can’t wait to taste them!

And of course many cats are enjoying my garden as well!

Beside my own harvest from the garden, I also go out in the fields to harvest wild greens to cook them. And now is also the time to pick wild asparagus.

Cooked, with a little salt, some olive oil and lemon, they taste the best for me. Do you remember my fantastic lemon tree? What am I happy with this lovely tree, fill with fruits.

Look my incredible meal today! And I didn’t had to go to the supermarket. Eegs are from my own chickies!

Calendula you can also find here in nature on some places, this is perfect to dry and use for a tea, or to put them in almond or olive oil for at least a month. This calendula oil you can use directly on your skin or use it as a base for creams or lip balms. There will be more info about in another blog.

Soon we will be able to harvest from the mountain garden - Thyme, chamomile and many more herb. We are so blessed living in Greece where many things are free to find, gifts from mother earth.

We were spoiled with fantastic weather, 20 – 23 degrees in the noon. The first summer vibes.
But now last week the temperature dropped with 10 degrees and even in the night around freezing point. I hope all will survive and that his was the last frost.
I cover the plants with a big plastic bottle, to protect them from the direct cold. Hopefully it works in that way.

Everyday another tree is waking up from the winter sleep, this is so wonderful to see. Also the colors in the mountains are changing every day. Light green trees between the trees that are all year around green.

We are expecting a lot of rainy days the coming weeks, so that will give us flowers in May.

Welcome April!
Hopefully many sunrises like this!

Have all a blessed month
