Overwintering Onions

in HiveGarden3 years ago

Further to my earlier introduction post where I announced my intention to use this platform for the purposes of sharing my food-growing journey, here's a little update from today.

It was drizzly out and the ground wet and soft. Some days I don't feel like going out there and digging in the wet soil, but it wasn't too chilly and I had onion sets to plant out.

It's better to get these things in the ground now so they stand a chance of establishing some roots and a little top growth before the weather worsens, so we're against the clock here now as the window of opportunity for planting things like onions, garlic and shallots narrows with each passing day.

Today, I had white onions to plant, and I was determined not to leave my allotment until they were safely in that ground!

I had already earmarked a bed that had broad beans growing in it this year (sown last November, harvested around June/July) so I needed to dig that patch over and clear it of weeds. I didn't take many pictures today, too keen to get it done before the proper rain arrived, but I can show you the finished job.

The onion sets I got are just a cheap pack from Wilko, I grow these most years and they do pretty well. I may decide to put some netting over the top to keep birds (usually pigeons) off. They do have a tendency to yank at the emerging onion tops, thinking they're food, discovering they are not, and then leaving them strewn on the surface.

The next to go in will be garlic and shallots (also from Wilko), but that's a job for another day. I will try and remember to take more pictures next time!

Thanks for reading, and happy growing, folks.
