Ah poop... I had discovered some of these unwanted guests a while back in a far corner of our block quite some time ago when we first moved in... and it has sort of informed our approach to how we have thought about the garden... no wood close in, and keeping mulch further out.
... and we also ringed the house with bait stations that would help infect the nest if they came close to the house. So far, we haven't seen any evidence that they have come close at all, so that is hopeful... but the worry is always there. Actually, the worry is more there for me... my wife seems to not be too bothered by it.
However, today... after some garden work, I had the sudden thought to check the single log that had been sitting around on a far edge of the block, near the street. Again... it is quite a distance away from the house, but I thought it was best to immediately call the pest control guy immediately. So, we have a treatment booked in for the next week... and hopefully, some of the critters will take back some of the treatment back to infect the main nest.
The termite guy did ask us to clear more of the leaf litter... and to have the wood mulching further away from the house. Minimum 3 metres was the recommendation, although, he recommended not using woodchips at all... he also said that the older suburb that we live in is sort of prone to the termites... old leafy suburbs that are close to nature reserves and with lots and lots of trees and shrublands close by... not really a huge problem, but best to stay on top of it before it gets out of hand!
I wasn't able to find a mound or anything like that... the termite guy said that it would be about football sized. I'm not sports fan, but I think that should be visible to the naked eye and sort of easy to spot.
Anyway... the appointment is scheduled in, and I will be doing a whole heap of tidying up in the coming days before the experts arrive. Sigh... I was planning on focussing on the mulching and then moving to the earthworks that need to be prepared... but this now jumps to the top of the priority list!

Hey Bengy that log looks nasty. Probably your termite-guy has plenty of solutions to offer. Anyway a cheap and simple way to keep the termites busy might be to attract natural preadators like ants, wasps and sorts.
Good luck with the challenge to get rid of these unwanted guests!
Ah, thanks for the natural predator hint! We do have ants around... and the pest control guy is coming today!
Good luck with the critters.
I am in my Spanish house now and the previous owner left me a ton of anti ant boxes and sprays. I have some time to prepare maybe cause I have not seen ants. PS with 25 degrees here and freezing in Netherlands my decission was right!
Ah, with warm weather you always have the little critters come out! That was something nice about Netherlands, not many flies and bugs! Enjoy the weather!
