Wet season
So is all hope lost, no. Thankfully we were not wiped out via a flood directly. But this season has been a tough one here in Sub Tropical Australia. Struggling through the water. so much water and then two days after the water and rains the plants are dying of heat stress and wilt. its so hard to water when less that 48 hours ago i backwashed the pool twice and was awake most the night waiting for water to come in the roof.
then after the rain, the bugs... the bugs... already oppressive here in QLD - they LOVE the rain... lol
for those that do not know, i have a suburban food forest garden raised on concrete around a pool in subtropical Brisbane Australia.
Paradise for sure. mostly. we take the good with the bad and get on with it. but sometimes... offffowwww its a struggle.
Then we just get up the next day and get on with it... lol
Here is the garden as it usually looks:
Rescued by the fire brigade during storm season 2011
we are no stranger to being flooded out. as young engaged folks we moved into a property that flooded up to the roof 2 weeks after we moved in. watched out possessions float down the Bremer river, and were separated by the Brisbane river for 3 days, with me bunking in nursing quarters (as a student) until my parents rescued me, and my husband to be was rescued by the fire department via a second story window.
I had no idea about this, i only assumed he might have drowned given he told me he was fine, not going to flood and was going to sleep upstairs... then the phones all got cut, and i saw our house flooded to the roof on the news. THREE days later i found he had been rescued and was working as a volunteer medic with the ambulance at an evacuation shelter. (student doctor at the time)
what flooded us was the WIVENHOE dam that was mismanaged and sent a tirade of water out of the dam
along with the rain. So forgive me when i get stressed when wivenhoe announces they are releasing the dam to reduce water levels.
3 times i think so far this season. Every time it cuts the roads around here so its annoying to be sure.
But this season has been wet. rain rain rain.
don't get me wrong its been amazing too. these holiday between thunder storms we have had pool parties in the garden and enjoyed our time most thoroughly.
anyway here are some shots from around the garden showing some of the damage that too much water, and too many bugs can bring. never mind the rain has made it tricky to garden. its not gentle sprinkling rain... that you can garden in, but torrential and dangerous storms that you respect when you live in these parts.
As you can clearly see. It is a right mess. Everything is mostly eaten and overgrown. Nothing grows weeds like torrential rain followed by burning sunshine!!
Not all doom and gloom though
Take all of the above with a little bit of Aussie. "sh'ell be right mate!"
its all good. its the joys of living in this crazy place that is Queensland.
Happily we have avoided a major flood up here this year, and them seem to be trying to avoid Wivenhoe flooding us this year. (i know plenty of people not as lucky as us this season).
However there are some small wins in the garden. We DID have amazing cucumbers.
my lovely purple flowers have survived.
AND the eggplants have been prolific despite the weather and the pests.
ANYWAY HAPPY NEW YEAR FOLKS
We are looking forward to 2025!
Hopefully we can get the garden back under control in the dry (winter) season.
regards

Below is the garden when we moved in - green - but nothing to eat
so as you can see... all is well !!

Here are a couple of snaps of some of the stuff i do outside what you see up in the posts above.
Happy New Year! those chillies look yummy I can't get enough of any type of peppers. Hopefully you can get your garden reigned back in 🙂
i better get it back in... yikes its a mess right?
The only things that are really producing in there are the eggplant and chilis (same family of plants i guess)
we go through a lot of chili in the house so i always have them.
Thanks yet again for stopping by!
