Running behind the schedule...
Hello, fellow garden enthusiasts! My name is Blingit, and I live in sunny subtropical Queensland, Australia. My blog is about urban backyard gardening and our journey towards self-sufficiency. Each season, we try to become more self-sufficient in a few things, whether it's growing our own fruits and vegetables or making our own compost. Our goal is to become as self-sufficient as we can be, given the limitations of living in an urban area. we are getting there, and every season we tick off a few things. aggg.
Appologies
I've been absent from the blog for the past two weeks because I've needed further urgent MRI scans. My nerve-damaged hand has been giving me grief, with a numb sensation creeping up my hand and a heavy feeling in my arm at times. As you can imagine, this has prevented me from doing much gardening. However, I'm hopeful that the scans will give me some answers, and I can't wait to get back into the garden soon. Its just so annoying for an activer person such as myself.
so so jolly annoying
Excuse the "slightly shorter, less useful post today"
im just touching base... not a big epic marathon from me today.
THE TOUR
Speaking of the garden, let me give you a quick tour of some of the flowers and fruits we have right now. As i have not done much, here are some "snaps around the garden"
The turmeric plants are in full bloom, with gorgeous white flowers that brighten up the garden. Turmeric is a member of the ginger family and is a popular spice in Indian cuisine. It's also known for its medicinal properties, including anti-inflammatory effects. And, as i found out, the flower is super pretty.
you can just see the root (the bit you eat) sticking up a touch... i
the Citrus
Citrus is a popular fruit in Australia, and we have a few different varieties growing in our garden. We have lemons, oranges, limes, and grapefruits, and they all add a lovely burst of flavor to our meals. Citrus trees are relatively easy to grow in our subtropical climate, and they make a great addition to any garden. We had some problems with pests over the season (ongoing) but hopefully our cold weather spell coming up will help.
Chili plants
Finally, I have to mention my fantastic and well-loved chili plants. We have a variety of chili peppers growing, including jalapeños, cayennes, and habaneros. Chilis are relatively easy to grow and are a great addition to any dish that needs a bit of spice. We use them in everything from stir-fries to soups to salsa. and mostly CURRY really... live Indian food here.
The HUGE BIG BUGS IN THE COMPOST - i nearly died
these jumped out at me the other day when putting in scraps... they are HUGE like 10cm long... they are Australian rhinoceros beetles apparently according to my bug loving husband.
RESET NEEDED
As winter approaches, we need to "reset" the garden and prepare for the cooler months. This means planting some winter crops, pruning back some of the summer plants, and making sure everything is in good shape for the months ahead. I can't wait to get back into the garden and start working towards our goal of self-sufficiency.
That's it for this blog post, I hope you enjoyed the quick tour of our garden and our journey towards self-sufficiency. Stay tuned for more updates on our progress, and if you have any tips or suggestions for urban backyard gardening, feel free to share them in the comments below. Happy gardening!
Anyway thanks so much for stopping along and reading my posts I am just loving my HIVE experience so far. Such a fun platform for sure.
For those that don't know my i'm currently focusing on Daily painting and somewhat amusing my self and my family with Acrylic pouring.. lol.. i wish i had a separate studio for that as it is so messy.
My other HIVE interests are:
- cooking
sunset photography (i take photos of the sky every night)
Art
Graphic Design
Gardening (just a smidgion)
Ballet
Sewing - I make Tutus and ballet costumes too...
Here are a couple of snaps of some of the stuff i do outside what you see up in the posts above.
Love those big Rhino beetles! The fun thing is that they don't walk using their tiny claws. The move on their backs using muscular contractions
i hope i didn't kill too many moving the compost around... i didn't try and murder them... but they gave me such a fright, they are pretty strong and wiggly
They are pretty tough, it's mainly bird predators that worry them
Did you eat the bugs?
blerg.... no thank you ... lol
we did not eat the bugs. Not that i have said no to other crazy foods before, but n, we did NOT eat the big slimy bugs crawling in the compost bin :-)
thanks for stopping by :-)
